mcquaffles:
‘‘Of course that’s me exactly, I’m a total angel. Don’t know why anyone else has any other opinion of me.’‘ she let out a laugh, giving remus a cheeky wink as she opened the door to the staff room, grabbing her coat and her bag. She quickly pulled on her coat, zipping it up as they walked. ‘‘Oh I know, especially since she has a key to my flat, and therefore access at all hours of the day.’‘ Marlene laughed, giving remus a bright smile. ‘‘Don’t worry about my boss, I’ve pulled more than enough double shifts this last month, plus the new healers started today, so I’m good.’‘ Marlene gave remus a tired smile. ‘‘Where would you like me to start?’‘she asked him, giving him a mischievous smile. ‘’The blood on my shoes? Or the vomit on my trousers?’‘
“Forget angel, Marlene,”Remus deadpanned. “You’re a saint. An utter saint who allowed her best friend to stage a fight over cheesecake out of love and selflessness.” He answered her laugh with a more subdued chuckle. “Honestly, anyone who doesn’t see it must not have been there for the cheesecake martyring. That’s what we ought to call it now, I think.” The last part was a declaration, a joke thrown to the wind on the off chance he’d be taken seriously and the next time the whole Lily-Marlene-Cheesecake thing came in company it would actually be referred to as a martyring. He nodded at Marlene’s explanation of her boss; he wasn’t quite as knowledgeable in areas concerning them. Remus saw it do it a lack in first-hand experience, seeing as he’d been largely self-emplyed since leaving school. It made sense, though -- if Marlene was able to leave, it was because she’d have stayed at some other point. “Blood on your shoes, obviously.” He nodded her way, shoving his hands in his pockets to keep from going through the motions of his ‘lecturing prefect’ hand gestures. “I’ve always found it best to be methodical when explaining the origin of stains. Start with your feet and end with what’s in your hair, should there be any fluids hiding out in there.”
mcquaffles:
‘‘Oh I’d tell you if you were being a creeper. Do you know me at all Remus?’‘ She cocked an eyebrow at him. The hair on Marlenes arms stood on end and she shivered as she remembered the cheesecake debacle. ‘‘I thought I was safe, but no ninja Lily. Terrifying..’‘ she let out a laugh. ‘‘She knows I love her, I think we’ll be okay.. But I’ll be on my guard just incase.’‘ Marlene nodded her head at Remus, she started piling up her notes into their respective trays. ‘‘Obviously, is it even a day out with me if we’re not ignoring adulthood?’‘ She turned to her supervisor who simply nodded her head at her. ‘‘And I’m definitely good to go now.’‘ She smiled brightly at Remus. Leading him to the staff room, where she grabbed her coat. ‘‘We need to swing by my flat first, because these scrubs have all kinds of body fluids on them…’‘
“Ah, I think I know you. Sweeter than sweet and always alright with keeping your opinions of others to yourself, right? That you?” Remus let his smile go lopsided, lifted an eyebrow her way in a mirror of her own expression. He knew very well that she’d let him know if he was creeping, but it seemed more fun to keep that to himself. He nodded more solemnly when Lily was brought back up. “I get the feeling we’ll still be safe, but it’s never good to underestimate her, I’ve found.” Remus smiled brightly at the supervisor, just hoping not to be seen as some sort of heathen for escorting one of her charges towards blissful disregard of maturity. He nabbed a spare, empty piece of paper and dashed a note off to the person whose paper he was here to get -- he figured it wouldn’t hurt them to send an owl, right? They’d missed him, that wasn’t on him. He followed where Marlene led, wrinkling his nose on the way. “Ooh, please, spare no details. You just know how much I love hearing about bodily fluids. You can detail the origins of each stain on the way.”
franklongbottcm:
Frank let out a sigh. ‘’My dad wasn’t a superhero, he left when I was two. I didn’t even know him..’’ He shrugged, trying to shrug off the sentimental attitude he seemed to have caught. ‘’I dunno I think, I wanted to be an auror because my mum wanted me to work in the ministry and i thought it was the least shitty job?’’ Frank shrugged his shoulders. ‘’uhh.. I’m babysitting my neighbours cat, but that’s as new as it gets I’m afraid..’’ Frank fixed a book on the shelf. ‘’Really, not a single shred on news? How boring..’’
“It really does seem to suck less than filing papers for the Department of Magical Transportation.” Remus shrugged and cast his gaze wide, taking in the people still sitting with rapt attention at the droning speaker. He wasn’t uncomfortable, really. He just knew that he was always horrible at small talk, and here was a wonderful show that that hadn’t really changed. Not that he minded; what was the problem with some talk of fathers and aspirations to work for the ministry? But he did wonder if it was just a special talent of his, that try as he might to steer things away from the personal people sensed that he didn’t mind the personal, would keep it like a secret even if he wasn’t asked. He laughed. “Not one shred. Not even cat news! I’m the most boring person I know, I’m afraid. Even my color-changing book is more interesting than me, what with it being fake and all.”
franklongbottcm:
Frank let out a long sigh at Remus’ comment about ministry jobs. ‘’You’re telling me, you know when I was little, I always wanted to be an auror. It’s all I ever wanted to be, just like Alice’s dad, whenever he’d come and visit my mother and I, I thought he was a damn super hero.’’ He chuckled wistfully, ‘’I guess it was some connection to my dad aswell, something that connected me to this man I never even knew… anyway, here I am getting all sentimental and we’ve got a colour changing book to find..’’ Frank shook his head, staring to walk down the aisle’s of the store, it’s shelves filled from floor to ceiling with books. ‘’So tell me, what’s new with you?’’
He shook his head. Remus couldn’t remember a time he really had any aspirations of working in for the ministry; he supposed he could relate to looking up to his father, and his father’s job in the ministry, but it just never felt realistic for him. And being an auror never seemed like it’d be his sort of thing, anyway. Still -- well, he could imagine the feeling. “It seems like everyone had dreams of being an auror when they were younger except for me,” He joked, trying to inject some levity into the situation. “Probably that superhero quality, though. And well, hey -- getting sentimental will probably make it harder to find, keep you away for longer. Win-win, yeah?” Remus shook his head again, the gesture more amused this time around. “Nothing’s ever new with me. C’mon, anything new with you instead?”
siriusbleak:
“Mess?” Sirius took another look at his common room. Sure, to the sane mind, the living room seemed as if it had been ransacked by a family of wild erumpents. But for Sirius, the mysterious mess in his living quarters looked like any other ordinary day. “What mess?”
@remusjxhn
“Wow, you’re absolutely right,” Remus deadpanned as he stepped over a pile of -- well, on second thought, he didn’t think he wanted to think too hard on what exactly they were. “Dunno what I was thinking. Should I get my eyes checked, do you figure?” He figured the mess was what he got for offering to meat Sirius at his place, instead of somewhere safe and neutral without any recent signs of tornadoes. “I was going to say nice to see you, but, well. If I can’t even tell there’s no mess, how can I tell it’s even you?”
mcquaffles:
‘‘You’re definitely safe, my friend.’‘ Marlene sat her notes to the side, stading up from the desk she walked round to lean against the desk next to Remus. ‘‘C’mon, Lily lost her title when she tackled me for the last slice of cheesecake in fifth year. She’s a vicious beast, I tell you… You’re just nice to be around, you have better advice, dont tell her I told you that, she might shave my eyebrows off in my sleep.’‘ Marlene covered her eyebrows with her hands and made a shocked face. ‘‘I’m sure I’ll live without an editor on my essay, I scraped through seventh year just fine. But you know what you could do for me? Run away with me for a day! Let’s just take a day and just gather the gang and run away from all of this?’‘
“Yeah, yeah, that’s what they always say,” Remus joked as Marlene made her way around. He’d heard of the cheesecake debacle, though it had all happened too quickly for him to have seen it himself. He nodded anyway. “That’s fair. Though I feel like when it comes to desserts, you should just always be on your guard around everyone.” He raised an eyebrow, a mirror to Marlene covering her own. “I mean, she won’t hear it from me, but she might sense the disturbance. She might reenact the cheesecake thing the next time everyone’s together, just to let you know she knows.” Remus laughed. He had a feeling all of this was in jest -- and that it would never happen -- but you never knew. “You mean instead of needing work from me, you want to ditch responsibilities and have fun instead? Gosh, Marlene, I don’t know. Almost feels like you’re asking too much.” He laughed, again. “If you can, I’m good to go. Not like I have a real job to call in sick to, anyway.”
mcquaffles:
‘‘I don’t think you could really come across as creepy. You’re like the nicest person I know?’‘ she cocked her head to the side as he stepped closer to the healers station. ‘‘That’s terrible, I don’t know how I’ll ever forgive you…’‘ she let out a soft huff in his direction. ‘‘So you think you buy my love back do you?’‘ she looked away dramatically. ‘‘Because you’re totally right..’‘
“Better safe than sorry. Or, creepy, in this case.” Remus let out a self-deprecating burst of laughter, not sure if him being the the nicest person she knew was a joke or something else. “C’mon. You know Lily -- I don’t see how anyone could beat her in niceness.” He endured the dramatics with a practiced ease. It was hard not to be reminded of Sirius when around Marlene, and vice-versa, and if there was one thing Gryffindor Tower had done for him, it was make him alright at dealing with both of them. “I’d be honored to buy your love back if that’s the price of forgiveness. Cross my heart and all of that, you know.”
franklongbottcm:
‘‘if I didn’t desperately need the money then I very much doubt whether i’d work here. i’d much rather be working at the ministry again, y’know instead of doing this.’‘ Frank let out a long sigh as he walked around the store, pushing books that were sticking out of their rightful places. ‘‘Please just pretend that you need my help, I’ll actually tear my ears off if I have to listen to that anymore..’‘
Remus shrugged. He understood the sentiment -- if there was a stable job out there that wouldn’t question his schedule, he knew the boring, annoying day-to-day of it wouldn’t be enough for him to turn it down. Even if the annoying, boring day-to-day including mind numbing speakers and their groupies. But he didn’t have a job like that, and agreeing with words felt uncomfortable like an untruth. “Tough times for ministry jobs, though,” was all he left it at. As honest response as he had. “Happy to help, then -- in that case, can you help me look for a book that’s got binding that shifts from, uh ... purple. To orange. It’s important, and I’m afraid the task required full attention.”
fxrecracker:
“That’s very very kind of you, Remus, but I don’t. Especially if you end up touching flowers and having them wilt, no wonder Sprout had a vendetta for you, huh,” she laughed, put down her Shining Sunflowers, and turned back around to Remus. “Though, if you touch those, you might shine a little yourself. If you really wanted to shine that badly, I could’ve give you some of glitter, Lupin,” she teased as she went to hug him. “It really would’ve been a shame if you didn’t say hello, would’ve teased you for it until ETERNITY if I found out,” Lily pulled back and smiled. Today, the business was a little slower than usual, Lily thankful for it. Especially because now it meant she could spend some time with Remus, someone who always centered her, always helped bring her back down to earth. He had a calming presence, even though she knew that he had nothing close to a calm life.
“I’m happy we had a busy morning because if we hadn’t, I wouldn’t be able to spend time with you now. How are you? How’s your day been?”
“See, thank you -- I was only trying to be kind. I’m not really sure what I’d have done if you took me up on the offer, because that would not have been any kind of, well, kind.” Remus made the admission with an earnest expression on his face all the while before cracking a smile. And allowing himself to return her hug. When he pulled back he played up some theatrics, clutching a hand to his heart and taking a half-step staggering back. “I stand by the claim that her vendetta is why I’m so bad with plants. If only she’d tried harder, perhaps I’d be of any actual help to you when I stop in, huh? Much better than distracting you and turning down your glitter propositions.” Not that he wished a slow work day on Lily -- he didn’t often work actual jobs in actual places, but he knew from the odd one here and there that time could be excruciatingly slow if there wasn’t any point in being there -- but he was glad all the same to be able to have the time for a more proper visit.
“Well, I wouldn’t want to scare any customers away but I am glad to we can talk some. I’ve been alright -- how have you been? It feels like it’s been too long since we could meet up.”
mcquaffles:
Marlene let out a soft chuckle, picking up her cup of coffee and taking a sip. ‘’So you thought you come visit your ol’ buddy ol’ pal Marlene. Isn’t that sweet.’’ she smirked at him over the edge of her coffee cup. Before giving him a shocked face ‘’So you’re here to help my competitors get one over on me on one of our first assignments? I’m hurt Lupin, well and truly.’’
“Oh, good, I’m glad it read as sweet. I was concerned for a moment it might seem more creepy than anything, what with the hour.” Remus' tone was dry, but he matched Marlene’s smirk with a slight smile, rocking back on his heels for a moment before walking closer to the station -- seemed better, somehow, easier to step back should anyone actually need her and the station. “I’m sorry! People rarely take me up on the job, I had to take it on. I can look over yours as well -- free of charge, as an apology.”
"Well, this is awkward..."
singing along with the radio while they do house work
Remus turned around at the sound of a voice. To say he hadn’t been expecting anyone would be understating things a bit; he hadn’t been expecting anyone today, because he rarely expected anyone at all. And he certainly wasn’t expecting to see Emmeline.
“It only has to be awkward if we make it awkward,” Remus said eventually, a polite smile in place as he leaned his upper body onto the mop in his hands. It took conscious effort, same now as always, to dial the famed marauder-bravado up enough to own his quiet actions. Truthfully, he hadn’t noted his voice mingling with the WWN until he’d registered another voice over it; just as well. There’d be some truth in him shrugging off the encounter. “I shan't be ashamed of enjoying what’s on the radio for once. So hopefully that’ll take some of the awkwardness out of the equation.” He paused a breath and let his shoulders relax. He never quite knew what to make of -- well, most people. But it seemed like an awfully strange situation to turn into a problem, perceived awkwardness aside. “Is there anything I can help you with, Emmeline?”
mcquaffles:
Marlene was six hours into her twelve hour shift, she could feel the tiredness building behind her eyes, she was cradling a cup of coffee and working through her notes of the morning, she heard footsteps approaching the healers station she she looked up to see who was approaching her. ‘’I’d say you’re a sight for sore eyes, but if you’re here you either have nothing better to do or you’re hurt.’’ She raised an eyebrow. ‘’So which is it?’’
“Nothing better to do, clearly,” Remus quipped on instinct. Maybe it was some sort of Pavlovian response to the sight of Marlene’s raised eyebrow. Lesser men could be goaded into worse things with that eyebrow, he was sure, and so he let a sheepish smile take over his face. “Some student-healer is taking me up on the editing-for-hire. So I’m here to pick up a likely sloppily written analysis of the uses for Dr. Ubbly's Oblivious Unction.”
franklongbottcm:
‘‘You should try working here mate. I’m pretty sure I can feel my brain slowly slowly melting away out of my skull just listening to this guy’‘ Frank got up from his seat, and moved towards the shelves of books. ‘‘I’m so glad you’re not here to listen to him. It means I can pretend to be busy with something else.’‘ He let out a soft chuckle. ‘‘What can I help you with?’‘
“Ah -- well, not to rub salt in the wound, but with that description I am suddenly very glad to not work here.” Never mind that Remus was always worried that the too-regular frequency of his sick days would raise alarms should he find a regular job. No, it was better to act as if he was happy to be far away from the blissful routine -- blissful, boring routine -- of the shop. “Oh, I don’t need help. But I can pretend to lead you on a wild goose chase for a rare, non-existent thing if you need to get away?”
franklongbottcm:
People often came into the book store to give talks on their works, which people somehow found interesting. Frank however, tended to zone out after about ten minutes of the monotonous droning about the subject matter. It wasn’t until Frank noticed a familiar figure walking into the shop that he was broken from the half asleep state he had been in. ‘’Fancy seeing you here, here to join in the monotonous ravings? Or to fall asleep listening to this drivel.’’
Remus had come into the store with a hazy sense of purpose; it wasn’t until Frank posed his question that he even payed attention to what seemed to be going on around him. He sighed, shook his head; speakers in stores made it easier for him to look for what he needed, without much interruption, but he knew paying without being assumed into the group gazing with rapt attention at the -- author of something -- would be hard. “Well, I wasn’t here for either. I get the feeling I’ll end up stuck here anyway, though.”
fxrecracker:
Floriblunders Florist was a lovely place to work, in all honesty. The Ministry wasn’t a place she wanted to ( or really could work at ) during the war, and her knowledge on flowers & herbology, her love of it as well, was used & nurtured at her workplace. What more could she have asked for? Hearing someone come into the store, she smiled, though she couldn’t see them as she was carrying a tall pot of Shining Sunflowers. “WELCOME ! I can help you with anything you’d like, just give a minute to put these down and place them.”
“Do you need any help clearing a space for those?” There was equal measure of mild concern and amusement in the question as Remus walked over towards Lily, where she was hidden behind the flowers. “Though I’ve never been good with plants -- maybe you don’t want any help from me in case I accidentally touch a leaf and send the flower to its grave.” He wait, suddenly wondering if just dropping in like this would keep her from helping one who’d actually need help. Though he wasn’t sure if she could see it, Remus shrugged. “Hi, Lily. Just decided to see how things were going -- I needed something from the neighborhood and it seemed a shame not to say hello.”
alicefortiscue:
The Leaky Cauldron was close to Alice’s new place of work and unfortunately, she frequented it after longer shifts more often than not. She used to meet colleagues after work there when she was in the Ministry, when she was an Auror. It still stung, still stung fresh everyday she realized how mentally bored she was. This was why she she’d drink more so with Frank and other people she loves & cared about, Emmeline, Alastor, Dorcas, anyone besides at the bar BY HERSELF – they never let her drown her thoughts in alcohol alone. She surveyed the room, increasingly tired of this routine, thinking about leaving to go home when she decided to treat herself to a butterbeer after her second rum and cream soda. It was always a comfort. “Butterbeer, please! Make sure there’s extra foam on top, I don’t care if it’s spilling from out from the sides. I don’t mind the mess and I know you’re probably very busy,” she’d gained a new appreciation for service industry workers when she became one, and patiently waited for her drink.
In the past year, Remus had come to realize was that there were certain places where you just couldn’t avoid running into people you knew. It was the sort of revelation he felt stupid for -- in the current climate, it only made since that people in similar positions found relative safety in similar places. Maybe it was the sort of knowledge everyone else assumed, and he was the only one left surprised. Regular people with regular jobs with regular hours found themselves wanting a drink after work; that was normal. Craving the noise and environment of the place to work on whatever assignment he’d been able to scrape together for the week was not. Remus felt Alice’s being here should be less of a surprise. But her voice was familiar, and he couldn’t help but glance up from his parchment when he heard her order, a space over from him now that someone else had cleared out of the way. Familiar and unexpected. “Alice,” he said, causal and even, her name a greeting. He smiled, small and friendly enough to match his tone. “Y’know, I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone ask for more foam before.”
