Hakuren is having one of his singing sessions, much to the chagrin of his servants and retainers. He hasn’t really noticed his little sibling yet.

  A bitter laughter had abrupted from his vocals. Talk? What was there to talk about aside from trying to explain the monster inside of him and how it had nearly killed him. There was no talking for he refused to do so. He tried in the past and he could still remember how she turned her back on him in disbelief… Who’s to say she wouldn’t do it again?   “There isn’t anything to talk about… I told you at the funeral what was wrong and you turned your back on me… I do not hate you sister but I do not find myself able to talk without knowing what is to come.” 

When did it become like this? Evolving for the worst. They were the only shards left of a broken family, she had promised she’d always be there for him, she’d protect him, yet she had failed miserably. She had been torn between two sides, supporting her brother, helping Lord Kouen reaching his goals...until she had begun to fear him. Fear his hostile silence, his contained rage, his sudden violent and accusing speech urging her to take a side. Yes, she had abandonned him when he needed her the most, and now, she regretted it deeply. She couldn’t stand the distance, the misunderstanding, seing all this resentment that was going to destroy him.

“I didn’t-...Pardon me Hakuryuu, pardon me for not understanding your anger back then...I just couldn’t make a choice. I...was afraid of your wrath. I know it’s justified, but it’s directed toward the wrong people. Our cousins...they are for nothing in our misery... and you know it yourself, even if you refuse to acknowledge it.” She reached for his hand, squeezing it between hers. “I’m on your side Ryuu, but I cannot approve your reckless decisions, and it’s my duty as your sister, to reason you.”

Hakuei Ren - eldest daughter of the late Hakutoku Ren, blood-related sibling of Hakuryuu Ren and distinguished army general of the Kou Empire’s Western Subjugation Army.

Sinbad would be an absolute fool if he did not perform background checks on his guests but research this time around seemed unnecessary. For if there were names he can recognize at a glance (aside from Kouen Ren, of course), Hakuei would be near the top of that list. 

Aside from her rather formidable standing both in the Kou Empire royal lineage and in battle records, the princess was also known for her striking beauty. Something Sinbad can ascertain with his own eyes at this very moment.

“The pleasure is all mine, milady~”

He gives her a warm, charismatic smile before gesturing to the table laden with sumptuous dishes, fresh fruits harvested from the island, as well as several tall carafes of wine.

“You must be exhausted from your journey. Please, partake of the feast we have prepared for you and your companions. We can start the serious talk once you’re well-rested.”

In addition to his good looks, the monarch was truly polite and charming, probably the epitome of the perfect host. Based on this, it wasn’t hard to imagine how he managed to gather all these people around him, seducing them with an engaging demeanor and a sweet voice, making them forget all suspicions and restraint in his presence. Alas for him, it would require much more than pretty tricks to make the first princess truly trust him. If there was a thing wars and politics had taught her well, it was not to judge hastily based only on appearances. Sometimes even a beautiful embellishment could hide a rotten core. Not like she thought the sindrian King was an evil man, but until now, her instinct had kept telling her to stay on her guard.

Straightening up, Hakuei caught his gaze an instant, feeling the burn of his golden hues on her. This man is gauging you, she thought, almost convinced he had made some research on her.

“Indeed, the sea can be capricious at times, but we have to deal with it. My men and I are thankful for your hospitality Your Majesty.” 

Motioning toward the table, her eyes widened with surprise at the sumptuosity offered before her. Various dishes and treats, some she had never seen before, many jugs of the well-known sindrian wine...the King didn’t do things by halves.

“Big brother will eat them all for you, I can take it, I’ll just lay down afterward–” He’s going to die, surely, but he won’t let her eat them all. Proceeds to stuff his face with the cookies.

“Hakuren...! You’re not obliged, you said you were sick...” She places her tiny hands above his, worried. Actually she cooked them herself, Gyokuen just bake them because she was too young to touch the fire. Still not sure if they’re edible though, she might have put some unusual ingredients in them.

“Ah, sorry. I ate before this and I think my meal was ill prepared… Big Brother doesn’t feel well.”

“Oh...too bad. Should I keep some for later when you’ll get better then? Not sure if they’ll stay edible though...and I can’t eat them all by myself...” Proceeds to eat one.
