“You really know how to make a girl feel better,” Katrina teased, twining her scarf around her neck. “Do I have to perform tricks for an extra handful of coins, or will you help me just from the grace of your heart?” She was envious of Ren most days, it must be nice to be take care of– the jealousy made her twinge, she wanted to be happy for her friends instead of feel embittered. Her boots were knee high, the tall girl hopped around as she wrestled them on, laughing. “Wow, it can’t be any worse than that Belgian mess we saw last year. The one with the dogs as the main characters? God, I think I’ve had to drink away most of that plot..”

“I like to do what I can to make sure everyone’s happy,” Ren teased back, making a face over at her friend. While Katrina appeared to struggle with her boots, Renata had already laced hers up half way and had already slipped her jacket, her struggle came in the form of an old scarf that should have been thrown out in last year’s cleaning. “You know I actually really enjoyed that movie last year? It was pure shit, worse than shit, but it kept me laughing. It was one of those good stories, y’know? Makes for good fun later─ready?”

“Being homeless is so not my aesthetic,” Katrina said pointedly. Among other things that she thought didn’t suit her; begging her parents for money. She twisted a lock of hair around her index finger, the hair a shiny hue between blonde and brunette– she twisted her lips in distaste, it had always appeared mousy to her. Something about Ren’s words annoyed her, she was steeped so long in logistics and practicality that she didn’t want to hear about things that would make her happy– this was the plight of the twenty something, her father would have hit her knuckles for even considering. “I’ll be fine, honest. Don’t worry, it’ll fall into place.” Since when were you supposed to love your job? “Damn, then let’s go. Get your boots on baby, icecream’s waiting.”

“No, I guess it really isn’t─but if you were I’d make sure to walk pass you every day and drop by a few spare coins. I’d be one of those really supportive friends that makes sure you’ve got the right kind of coat on for when you’re begging for change outside of the bodega,” Renata teased playfully. Out of all of all her friends she knew she was the lucky one, able ot just take her days as she pleased without having to worry about bills or anything else. She didn’t know if it would last for long but it was something she planned on enjoying for as long as she could. Ren was quick to put her socks on before stepping into her boots, the laces only done halfway. “I can’t believe you’re actually forcing me through this film. If I walk into traffic right after, it’ll be your fault.”

“Because love don’t pay the bills,” Kat warbled, tossing the hat away and out of sight, it bumped against the wall and fell behind the couch– she’d fetch it later if she remembered. “It’s a good job, it gives me a lot of freedom.” She grinned at Ren, “When was the last time you saw me doing a real, honest day’s work?” Being trapped behind a desk for the rest of her life wasn’t her style, but neither was starving to death. “I could always take up that translation work again, though it kind of wanted me to boil my skin slowly.” Katrina wrinkled her nose– “Paid well enough. Let’s leave now so we can take our time with the icecream, how’s the nail situation?”

“Bills, bills, bills, the cages in everyone’s lives,” Ren said as she dismissed her argument. It was an easy thing to do for a girl who had been living in the city for years and so far had yet to know what it was like to struggle to make ends meet, her parents were constantly asking if she needed anything and were still more than willing to pay all bills just as long as it meant she was doing something that made her happy. “I’m not saying get a desk job. You could do plenty of other things that doesn’t require you to sit behind a desk and work all day. You just need to look for the right job, I’ll even help if you want.” She made sure all the polishes were closed tightly before pushing herself up to her feet with a smile, “all dry─see?” She lifted one of feet up to wiggle her toes at Kat.

Peter fought the urge to roll his eyes. “You would be surprised how many calls I get to fix things that aren’t broken,” the handyman mumbled. He could barely keep track of the amount of people who asked him over to just to take a look at something, and then decided to get pissy with him when he proclaimed it was broken. “Waving a wand won’t do you much good.” Peter said calmly, his relaxed demeanor seeping into his tone, “I can take a look at it and see if its a basic problem, but I don’t have a lot of experience with these things.” He knelt down next to his tool bag, grabbing a screw driver. “I have a friend who works at a music shop not too far away, I can give you his number if I can’t fix it.”

“Well that doesn’t surprise me, people are idiots,” Ren crossed her arms and leaned back against the door frame. Maybe if she knew what’d happened to it she could offer some information that could help in fixing it, but she’d been drunk off her ass and the only thing she remembered was feeling angry when the music stopped pumping through the speakers. “There you go, this is your chance to learn more about these things. Then next time someone calls you over to take a look at their record player you’ll be able to profit from it and not your friend that works in a music store─but I’ll take his number anyways.”

“I really hate going to these things alone.” She leaned back in the arm chair, jumping as Arnie crankily hopped into her lap– demanding attention by rubbing his head against her thigh. Kat obliged, “I honestly though this job would be a temporary thing, but here we are two years later with no end in sight.” The gummy bears eased the bite in her tone and she grinned at Ren’s agreement. “Nah, but it’s getting cold. You might want to.”

“If you hate it so much why don’t you quit your job and look for one that has things you actually do like?” Ren questioned her friend with a puzzled look. Renata didn’t understand people who spent their lives doing things they didn’t enjoy, one of the reasons why she found herself dropping out of NYU with only a few classes left before graduation. She realized maybe she didn’t love it as much as she should. Her decision was hasty but she was happier, though recently she’d found herself struggling with her choices. “You could could just quit and start up something new, it’s very liberating─and it’s not that cold yet, I can handle one more day without a hat.”

“You should still come, we can get waffle cones after.” She’d use whatever pull she had to get Ren to come, though Kat still let out a muffled sound as the pillow flopped into her face. “I’m getting real tired of your doubt in me Renata.” Katrina looked down as her friend’s toes wiggled, making a face. “You know half of those dry matte, right?– A Tale of Tales. I think it actually is in English though, I’ll have to check.”

“You always know the right words to say to make my heart skip a beat.” Renata was one of those people who craved ice cream no matter what the temperature was, oddly enough the colder it got in the city, the stronger her cravings grew. She looked down to her toes once more, wiggling them about as she reached for a gloss top coat, “Doesn’t matter, you can put a top coat on anything to fix that. the Gel coats even fix the velvet textures but fine, I’ll go. You won’t make me wear a hat, will you?”

“It’s in English,” she said, as though it would help her case in promoting the film– “All the other reviews say that it’s like the Princess Bride on crack, so it might be really good.” Katrina popped a gummy bear into her mouth, chewing thoughtfully before offering the bag over to Ren. “I got two tickets, if we both fall asleep, help me bullshit the review at least.” She sighed, pulling it off and letting it find home on the floor. “I’ll find someone who loves it, Marz’ll cry if I toss it.”

“Are you lying to me right? You’re totally lying. Two seconds ago you said it had subtitles!” She said, as she reached for a nearby pillow and tossed it across the room in the direction of her friend. Renata glanced down to her toes, each one now done in a different color, bright enough to draw attention to them though she mostly always wore boots these days given as to how cold it’d been lately. “I have always loved the Princess Bride. What’s it’s called?” She asked, reaching for a gummy bear.

It’s a nice way to pass the time when you have a newspaper in front of you. Other than that she doesn’t pay much attention to it.

All the time, at least twice a week. They happen in the moment and pass just as quick.

Drink as many Monsters as one can before inducing a heart attack.

Wild nights out, there’s nothing wrong with an intimate get together but Renata likes the uncertainty that comes with nights out. It’s the prospect of meeting new people and allowing them to take charge for the night, getting a glimpse into the world of others, and embarking in new adventures throughout the city.

Still living in the city. Still happy. Still cracking jokes.

“Look I don’t know what you want me to tell you.” Peter sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s definitely broken.”

“I know it’s definitely broken. I figured that out on my own when it stopped playing my vinyls.” Renata’s voice came out more agitated than she would have liked it to but it’d cost her three days working at the coffee shop. “Isn’t there something you can do? Take it apart or wave a wand, do a little dance, tap your heels three times? Anything?”
