also i want to say: i don't think this was bad writing at all. this was actually very beautifully written. i think the show keeps doing this thing, where a lot of things could've been angstier but instead we just get pat and pran in love, pat and pran choosing each other, pat and pran communicating. the break-up is the same. our expectations are all over the place because the show only shows us their best. even at the very, very end when they look at each other and everything clicks in a horrible, awful way... that's good writing. it's upsetting because it comes after worse BL shows that do the episode 11 breakup for drama, but with bad buddy it's actually not dramatic at all. there's no miscommunication, just love and inevitability. that's both more and less frustrating than it would have been if pat had kept his dad's sin from pran until the last minute, or if pran had said out loud "i don't think i can choose you over my mother" or they had broken up before taking that time off at the beach to fully express how much they loved each other first so we were always left a little wanting.

the reason a lot of people didn't see the breakup coming is because pat and pran had already processed it without speaking. like the entire episode is the breakup. it's between the lines, the same way their relationship is.

i don't think episode 12 will be bad writing, either, because the same way even the worst arc (wai! pat getting shot!) was written, it's always about pat and pran being in love. even this episode starts with pat missing the garbage bin twice to make you laugh. like. i'm worried. but the more i think about it, the more i think bad buddy will stand the test of time. it's one of those shows. i'm scared of episode 12. but i'm glad i saw the previews, because i needed to recontextualize episode 11, because it hurts, but it hurts because it was meant to, and in a way that was so careful and so patpran.

when pat said, “thank you for trying to make a silly guy like me happy,” i took that as, “thank you for staying longer for me but i know that you want to leave. you don’t have to try anymore.”

when pat continued with, “you never leave me. you fight alongside me. that makes me very happy,” my brain automatically continued the sentence with, “—but you don’t have to fight by my side anymore.”

them eloping was essentially them fighting their parents, and pran had lost the will to fight in this way. pat didn’t want pran to have to fight anymore, because he’d noticed how it was beginning to eat at him. the two of them have technically been fighting this uphill battle their entire lives. they’re tired. they’re also young and stupid—but still more mature than most, which is why the breakup felt so weighted and heartbreaking.

hey this sucks and i'm miserable over it. i don't want another timeskip before happiness, their whole story has been about stolen time stolen love stolen childhoods. i don't want them to have to wait any more, i want their parents to cop on to themselves. i want pran to stop having to repress bc he's been taught advocating for himself is selfishness, and for pat to not feel like he's silly for wanting something for himself bc he's used to being treated like his feelings aren't real or don't matter. i want them to be together. they've been made wait too long already. their lovely and special and tender first time shouldn't be treated as a stolen moment away from reality, they're not the thieves. i wanted reality to catch up, not catch up to them. the notion that it will End happily is not a comfort at the expense of their Middle being held hostage, and having seen their Beginning cut off at the knees
