The day had taken a toll on her and as she’d laid in the bed in the room next to his, she felt alone.  The feeling was overpowering and all she wanted to do was be close to someone who could understand everything she’d just been through.  Taking a deep breath, she buried her face in his chest, listening to his heart beat and feeling his chest raise and lower.  There was something about being close to someone alive that made the day less difficult. 

“I didn’t think we were gonna make it there for awhile.” She looked up, her eyes looking over his face and she smiled. “Thanks for having my back out there.”

“Hey, you had mine, too. Would never have made it out alone.”

Carlos smiled, lifting a hand to reassuringly stroke her hair. He put on a strong front...but the things he saw, the comrades he lost, the civilians he couldn’t save...it’d haunt him for a long, long time. Having Jill so close, though, nestled in bed, helped chase away the bad memories. They survived, they made it...despite the odds, they were safe.

“Stay as long as you need, ok?”
