ARCHITECTS IN CALAIS: ON BORDER SYSTEMS AND SELF-BUILT CITIES (2018)
This interesting podcast from Failed Architecture focuses on the role of architects in relation to temporary refugee camps, using the now-demolished Calais ‘jungle’ as a reference point. It acknowledges the recent tendency in the architectural world to fetishise or romanticise these kinds of settlements, with all the (even if unintentional) condescension and over-simplification that implies. We hear from architects and aid workers whose involvement with the camp has given them differing views about the role external volunteers and professionals can and should play. Perhaps most interesting is architect Grainne Hassett who discusses the specific shortcomings of the Calais structures she was involved in implementing, and emphasises that nothing they were able to contribute was ever a fraction of what residents deserved.
