math can be a challenging subject. if you donāt understand the main concept, it will be very difficult to solve a simple problem, which can make the more complex ones almost impossible. here are some tips that i used to help improve my grade in math.
review the basics. this is so important!! you canāt jump out into the deep end if you donāt know how to swim. take some time to review basic concepts and go over the topics that you may be struggling with. this is especially important for higher levels of math, such as calculus where itās important to have a good understanding of pre-calculus.
take active notes during class. if your teacher gives you time to try a problem during class, use the time!! this was one of my biggest problems in high school - i would assume i understood and not try the questions. itās important to try the questions assigned and follow along. if youāre stuck, your teacher will be there to answer your questions right away. itās a really good idea to try and solve a problem on your own during class, if time allows you to.
learn your formulas. this is a big thing if you arenāt provided with a formula sheet. itās a good idea to start trying to memorize your formulas as soon as they are introduced to you instead of leaving them until before the test as they can pile up quickly. itās important that you know your formulas as one small error, such as a positive instead of a negative, can have a huge impact on your answers.
do your homework as soon as it is assigned. this is really important. you should try to do some problems while the material is fresh in your mind. if you put it off, you are more likely to forget.
try and do all of your homework/practice questions. itās so important to practice math! people often think math isnāt a subject that you study, but it is. you need to practice all of the questions and understand the topics. math isnāt a subject that you just look at and automatically know and understand. you have to practice the questions and become familiar with how to solve all of the problems. if you donāt have time to finish it all, try and do one or two of each different problem. i would then suggest going back to the questions you didnāt have time to finish before a test or exam. practice is so important in math.
check your answers to make sure theyāre right. itās great if youāve done your homework and itās right, but not so great if not. if you donāt have the answers provided to you, try using a website (i suggest wolfram alpha - it provides you with the correct answer for free, but you can also become a paid member to get access to all solutions, this could be a good idea if you had some friends who would want to share the cost and share the membership together) to find the correct answer. if you havenāt got to the answer yet, just keep trying until you do! and if you donāt, ask for some help!
do practice tests and exams. ask your teacher if they have any old or practice tests/exams that you can use for practice. itās great if you can get them from your teacher as this can give you a good idea of how they ask questions and structure the test/exam. you can also time yourself to see if you have any difficulties working with the time limit and if thatās something you need to work on or not.
review problems done in class. i always try to do this before a test. i take all of the sample problems that the teacher did in class and paste them into a word document and print them off to complete on my own. then when iām finished, i can just reference back to my notes and see how iāve done in comparison to how the teacher did.
use extra resources. this can include a variety of things: going to office hours, getting extra tutoring, watching videos, website references, etc. there are so many resources that you can use!
take a few minutes to summarize all the basic concepts and formulas down on one sheet of paper before a test/exam. itās a great way to review everything and reinforce all the major topics one last time. if you do this a few days before the test you can also use it as a reference to help with your studying.
review your old tests/graded-assignments/anything-graded-really to see where you went wrong. it can be discouraging looking at where you went wrong, but itās important that you see where your problems were so you can try and improve.
give yourself time to learn. itās impossible to get everything right the first time you try it. learning takes time and you need to be sure you have that time. try not to leave the things you have to learn until the last minute. youāll cause yourself so much unnecessary stress and frustration that can be avoided if you work at it every single day.
