"Trans-allegoria" Group Exhibition.
“Trans-allegoria // in between words, visuals and their opposites, Part II” group show: 10 October – 25 November 2017 @ “IFAC Athina” gallery in Athens. Curated by Lydia Andrioti.
“This project [initially curated for the Mykonos Biennale 2017] aims to generate discussions about art’s ability to enhance the understanding of our condition, up to the point where words, visuals and actions transform into opposite meaning, causing their destruction or re-creation. Our intent is to showcase the multiple ways an allegory can be transformed in the appropriate context. We use the multifunctional prefix "Trans” as it binds opposites together, and can be used to change the meaning of all words.“
Works exhibited: Digital algorithmically generated print "Spring” from the series “Google Equinoxes”.
Exhibition View.

That’s a ball.” – Pepper LaBeija (November 5, 1948 – May 14, 2003), “Paris is Burning,” 1991. . Pepper LaBeija, who died fifteen years ago today, was the legendary mother of the House of LaBeija, who was immortalized in the 1991 documentary “Paris is Burning.” . LaBeija, who became mother of her house in the early 1970s and led it to greatness, was, as her New York Times obituary explained, “the last of the four great queens of the modern Harlem balls; Angie Xtravaganza, Dorian Corey, and Avis Pendavis all died [before her]. These four exuded a sort of wild expressionism that might make Las Vegas showgirls seem tame.” . LaBeija was “a legend to the members and patrons of the Harlem ball scene…the idea [of which] was to give [queer] blacks and Hispanics a place to dress up and perform. An earlier circuit for drag performers had been geared to white people…the new balls did more than add [some sense of] racial justice…Trophies were awarded to those who best achieved ‘realness,’ or resemblance to an archetype. The paradox was more bitter than sweet: performers strove to become the very people who would reject them. The best won trophies; no one won more than Miss LaBeija, who took away around 250, mostly for extravagant takes on high fashion.” . LaBeija had diabetes; she was bedridden for most of the last decade of her life. She last performed at a ball in 2001, when thirty attendants delivered her to a jubilant crowd. . Pepper LaBeija died of a heart attack on May 14, 2003; she was fifty-four. #lgbthistory #HavePrideInHistory #PepperLaBeija #Resist
In Rez Dog, Rez Dirt, Demian DinéYazhi´ layers text and narration over footage of his grandparents’ land north of Ch ́ínílį–Diné Bikéyah (Navajo Nation). In the voiceover, he describes returning to the reservation where he spent much of his childhood. Through the intimacy of his story and the video’s DIY aesthetic, his monologue expresses a deep emotional connection to the desert. Printed over the shaky, lo-fi footage is Joy Harjo’s poem “Returning from the Enemy,” which speaks to the profound relationship between home and land. While the simultaneity of the two texts introduces a sense of disconnection and rupture, for the artist the entwined stories are also a testament to the concept of survivance. More than survival, it is a way of life that actively sustains Indigenous forms of knowledge.
