before i go to bed i just want to emphasize again that none of you need any permission to be butch. like none! and i truly understand the uncertainty and insecurity and worry that you're taking up the wrong space or that you were wrong or you're not enough or whatever but even the most traditional flat top diesel dyke butch has felt that way before, because it takes time and it takes a lot of patience to learn how to love yourself consistently and to get comfortable with loving the way you do butchness and masculinity. it can be both a shatteringly difficult yet at the same time a healing and restorative process to learn how to let yourself be butch. it can be both panic and euphoria. it can be both certainty and worry.
you worry that you being bi and butch might be too controversial, too challenging? what is butch if not a challenge! what is butch if not a demand to be recognized! listen to me, you are allowed! in fact you already are butch to begin with! you are allowed to say a name that is already yours! this desire and yearning is a kernel of being! this wanting means something! listen to yourself! you have nothing to prove to anyone! you need not make yourself suffer for the sake of anyone else's approval! you do not need to crawl a thousand miles on your knees repenting, or however mary oliver put it! you don't! get off your knees and walk. it's okay. you don't need to make yourself smaller. IT IS OKAY! it is okay. butchness is a beautiful project, and there is no reason to deny yourself participation. there is no reason to keep yourself wanting. not a single one
