HISTORY
Growing up as the son of one of the best real estate investors in New York City had plenty of perks, and Reyan took advantage of all of them. He had the city at his fingertips, and he sought out every new opportunity that he could. His schooling was top of the line, and the best tutors saw him achieving some of the highest ranks possible. His father had big dreams for him, and he felt the pressure to achieve them since he was his only child.Â
He was vaguely aware of his fatherâs real job when he was younger, but as he grew older he was brought more into the real business. By the time he was a teen, he was handling smaller jobs and working to earn respect from some of the members of the Society. He didnât back down from any challenge handed to him, and he made it a point to make it known where his loyalty was.Â
His father was the right hand man, and he worked to prove himself capable of more responsibilities once he was in his twenties. He handled the real estate deals with confidence and everything else fell into line shortly after. He played the role he needed to in meetings and followed every order. He knew what was expected, and that was where he excelled. He had the desire for more, but he was aware of the path he would take moving forward.Â
The marriage hadnât been part of his plans. He had expected to find a woman and settle down at some point, but having one suggested for him was a surprise. Derin was beautiful, but she was a handful. Any of his calculated plans for his future were put on hold as they led a dual life of appearing perfect and being almost strangers behind closed doors. It was a battle of give and take and more arguing than he cared to deal with. His worst case of giving in landed them in Europe for two and half years where she worked and he continued to grow his own fortune and make connections if they ever needed them.Â
But now they are back in New York, and heâs stepping up into the role he felt ready for. He would lead the Society with his wifeâs brother, just like their fathers had for years.
Derin's head snapped towards him, it wasn't often he got snappy with her, very rarely when he cursed. But today was shit and now he knew details of her private life, as did the rest of the damn city. "So-sorry." She mumbled as she tightened her grip on him and gave in to his direction. "What-what about Dilan." She said as she followed him, wanting to get out of there as fast as they could. She spotted the car as they got out of the fairgrounds.
Reyan wasn't in the mood to explain. There was too much happening, and he needed her to listen and stop asking questions. He continued to pull her toward the car and shook his head. "She has people looking out for her. We have to go now." He unlocked the car as they approached it and opened her door. "You can think about other people when you are safe, Derin."
"What-what is going on?" She said as she looked at him through the daze. She was obnoxiously drunk and everything was spinning now. "What about that, where... the people." She said as she resisted his guidance. Her heart rate started to skyrocket as she dug her grip tighter into his hold. "Where... why.. Rey, I'm scared." She admitted through the chaos and screams that filled the chilly air. "Am I okay? Are you?" She questioned still lagging behind and not quite grasping the urgency of them getting out of there."
"Derin, can you fucking walk, please." Reyan fought to keep the anger out of his voice, but he was frustrated as he continued to pull her and listen to her questions. He knew she was drunk. It was obvious, but he needed her to pull herself together enough to listen. "We are leaving. We can discuss this at home." He didn't need her breaking down in front of him. Whatever happened was not her problem, and he didn't want her to stop and look when he wasn't sure where the danger was.

The blast could be felt everywhere. With the area going dark, the deafening boom, and the copious amounts of alcohol in Derins body, she hit the floor. She wasn't sure if it was from the blast or from being pushed over, but she knew she was fucked. As she tried to push herself up, someone ran into her and pushed her down again. Suddenly a hand gripped at her arm and pulled her up and she clung to him tightly. "Rey-" Her body was shaking with fear already. She looked up and that's when she saw it, the smoke, the fire, and the Ferris wheel coming down. "Oh my god."
Reyan had wanted to enjoy the rest of the carnival, but the night was ruined when he heard the explosion. Debris fell around him as he started to look for Derin. He knew he should look for anyone that needed help, but finding her was his priority. He saw someone knock her down, and he pushed his way through the crowd to grab her. "Derin, come on." His hand gripped her and he pulled her to her feet and toward safety. "Stop looking. Move. We have to get out of here."
Reyan was ready for the end of the night. He had things he wanted to do that didn't involve watching ridiculous displays of love and listening to the annoying giggle of children. He stood off to the side and watched as people continued to pass in front of them before he looked at Levent. "It is a waste of time to be here."

Reyan was trying to stay busy at the carnival. He didn't enjoy things like it often, but it was an excuse to be out and show that the events over the holidays had no lasting effects. He smiled as he waited in the short line for the booth Blake was working at. "What's the best prize on the wheel? I want to make sure I aim for the right spot."
"I think we can both agree that it will probably be me." She said with a small laugh. She wasn't a clean freak, she didn't need her home to be pin-perfect all the time but she wasn't a slob. Her space just looked lived in. "I know, but let this be the one time I do." This was an odd day, but she promised she wouldn't fight him on the move and she would hold to that. They might argue plenty, but they never broke promises. They had a foundation of trust that she respected. "The dog has a name. Maisie." She looked up at him, "And Maisie likes that it will be just us for a while." Yeah, she would talk through the dog for her own statements. "I'll think about it." She said with a small smile, she wasn't eager to decorate it. "Yes please, let's continue."
"I'm not the one that said it." He smiled at her and let a small laugh escape him. He kept his rooms as clean as they could, but her small messes never bothered him. It was a balance that worked well enough. "Fine, fine." He'd let her if it didn't cause a fight. He wanted the rest of the move to go smoothly. Things would be delivered for the next few weeks, and it would be easier if they were both onboard with it. "I am aware of her name, Derin, and I am sure she is." He didn't add that he debated if the dog knew her name yet or that she shouldn't chew on her own tail. But there was no reason to point it out. "Come on then." He led the way back through the house and stopped as he looked at the windows. "The view will be breathtaking in the mornings." He turned to go upstairs and leaned against the wall as he nodded at the first hallway. "There's a spare bathroom down this hallway and two bedrooms with en suites. You can pick whichever you like for yours. Mine is down the other hallway."
"Yeah it really has been, I feel like I've barely seen you lately." Blake said attempting to keep the disappointment out of her voice as she spoke. It wasn't his fault, and she knew she also was in no way entitled to his time. "Let me know when you're ready and we can get out of here. They were fine, very boring and uneventful. How were your holidays?"
"I've had to deal with several important matters." Reyan said with a frown. Getting shot shouldn't have happened. It had only complicated everything else that was already taking up most of his time at the moment. It felt like there was always something to do. "I'm in no rush. It is nice to be out for the moment." He turned in his seat to face her more. "They were as good as they could be. I have no complaints other than the obvious."
Victoria arched a brow, a knowing smile playing at her lips as she slid into the offered seat, crossing one leg over the other with effortless ease.
âFlattery will get you everywhere, Mr. Reis,â she mused, resting an elbow on the table, taking a moment to study himâlike a song she was deciding whether to hum along to. Gossip traveled fast, and anyone willing to pay for a VIP seat was worth knowing. Some were open books; others took a little more effort. He was the latter.
âSurpassed them, huh?â Her lips curved as she leaned in slightly. âCareful now, youâll have the next act nursing a bruised ego before they even step on stage.â
She signaled to the bar for a drink before returning her attention to him. âBut I appreciate the compliment. And since my boss happens to have impeccable tasteââ her smile turned sly, ââIâd say sheâd agree.â
Letting the hum of the club settle around them, Victoria traced the rim of her glass now placed in front of her, eyes still fixed on him. âYou donât strike me as someone who spends his nights here just for the ambiance.â There was a quiet curiosity in her voice, a playful edge beneath it. âSo tell meâwhat keeps bringing you back?â
Reyan chuckled and shook his head. He was well aware of how well flattery could work when it was extended. He had no reason to show her anything except honesty. It was no secret how talented she was. "I'm being honest, Miss London." He smiled as he relaxed in his seat and watched her. "We both know the next act won't be able to compare. I would assume most in the seats tonight were here to see you, not them."
He took a sip from his glass as she ordered her own and nodded at the further mention of her boss. A Moretti if he remembered right. It was a Serpent business, but he didn't want to think about that at the moment. All that mattered was her talent was treated appropriately.
"The ambiance isn't bad. Better than some of the clubs in the city." He smiled and looked around the club. He was never someone that liked the chaos of Babylon or Pandemonium. "I think you know what catches my attention. A talented jazz singer is hard to find."
Patience was something she was well acquainted with, Sofia knew that she couldn't just expect results immediately. Waiting was likely in her best interest to find the property most suited to her in the first place anyways. "I think dogs can be pretty great. My parents never let me have one when I was growing up, but now I get to have one of my own. I've gotta make the right decision when it comes to one. Plus, you never know ... dogs can be surprising," she said, shrugging. "Move in ready," she told him. "With all the stories I'm working on ... Renovations are the last thing I need on my plate."
Reyan had never cared much for having animals around. His parents had been like Sofia's and hadn't allowed him to have one growing up, but he didn't feel like he missed out on something. "They can be. They can also be a lot of work. It is something to keep in mind when we are looking for a home. You'll need somewhere to walk one that will be safe." He had to take that into account when he was looking for his own property thanks to his wife. "Move in ready should be doable. I'll make sure my assistant has your correct info, and I can send you the listings in a few days." He looked down at the list and read over it once more before looking back at her. "Is there anything else?"
"Is that another babysitter for me or for the dog? Because I was under the impression you were my babysitter." She said as she looked up at him, that was his purpose really, but her tone was teasing and light. "I-I know." She shuddered over her words. They had to be different, she needed it to be. Not just safer but different between them. "Thank you for that." She gave him a small smile, "I appreciate it. I haven't told either of my siblings and I'd like to keep it that way for a while. I won't bring anyone around here." She needed a place just to herself for a while, where she could escape and not worry about being bothered. That's why she liked Italy so much. As the moment lingered on, she took a step away and picked up Maisie again, "The rest of the tour? I think Mai is excited to see our room."
"It depends on who messes up the house more." Reyan smiled as he looked down at her. Sometimes life with her wasn't bad. It could even be enjoyable. "You don't have to thank me for it, Derin." He nodded at her words and ran a hand over her back. If she didn't want to tell anyone yet, he wouldn't be the one to break that seal of trust. It would have to be worth the argument that would come later if he did. "I won't either. It can be us and the dog for now." He looked back at the puppy as Derin picked her up. "We can continue. The rest of the floor you can decorate if you want. If not, a stylist will be around to put things in order. Are you ready to move upstairs?"
Sofia wanted to ensure her own safety. She needed some sort of element of protection, just anything that'd appease her mind. Sofia could figure things out closer to a move in date. Her mind was jam packed. She was a little ahead of herself, but she was okay with that. She nodded at Reyan's words, lips pursing slightly. "I've never actually owned a dog before. I guess I'll have to do some research before getting one." She didn't have the faintest idea of how to care for one, but she was a quick enough learner. She'd figure it out and find the breed that suited her best. She nodded, a small sigh escaping her lips. She knew a yard would be necessary. Dogs deserved yards, they deserved space to play and run around. She could afford it, she just had no idea where she would end up. "I'll take a look at whatever you send me. I don't really have a deadline in mind, actually. I'm pretty open when it comes to time."
"I can't say I am much help there. My wife wanted one, so now we have a dog, but I doubt she would be of much use for protection." Reyan couldn't see the puppy protecting anyone from anything, but that wasn't why the animal now lived in his house. Derin had wanted it, and he had given in. He still wasn't sure if it was a good idea to do it, but she had been taking care of it. He was glad he didn't have to deal with it. He nodded again and sat back in his chair. "No deadline is good. It means we can take our time and make sure you don't compromise on anything you want. Would you prefer move in ready or something you might need to do a few renovations on?"
"And a man doesn't usually come out, alone in public to drink his whiskey in peace unless he's heartbroken or scheming, and since I know the marriage isn't on the rocks yet..." Adam trails off, a small flicker of a gesture to the bartender calling for a drink of his own. It didn't bother him whether he was right or wrong; he wasn't here for anything other than a stoic reminder that he was watching - they were watching. With Mia Gallo dead, tortured, Adam knew it would only be a matter of time now. "To them, maybe." he glanced around at the few others scattered throughout the bar, "I'm not so ignorant."
"You seem to know an awful lot about a business man." Reyan looked over at him and back to the bartender. He had only been back in the states for a month and a half, and up until the events at the clubhouse he had made sure he wasn't on anyone's radar. It was easier to do his job when he didn't draw attention. He lifted his drink and took another sip. "Everyone has an opinion." He didn't think it was wise to hassle a man off the clock, but Reyan wasn't an officer for a reason.
" OH, CERTAINLY. BUT THEN, my dear -- you do have to consider that we are enduring the same circumstance. " her glance is knowing, but simultaneously comforting. at least, that's what she hopes it to be. perhaps it's the mother in her. the need to comfort, the need to ease some of the burden even when the people in her life carried them. shouldered them, if she cared enough. at times, she noticed she cared a bit too much. " that's the benefit of living in a place like new york, no? so much to do right outside your door. " adeline tended to lead a rather private life when she wasn't engrossed in her work, but when she did find it in herself to be social -- the wide variety of options was both exciting and overwhelming. " we don't have to talk too much shop, if it feels like too much. even you deserve a chance to breathe, reyan. " if he did not have the opportunity to clear his mind -- how would a thought of how to move forward come to him? the ball was in their court, wasn't it? " i couldn't agree more. some say that the best move is always to counter -- but how could one counter, without some kind of strong base to stand on? " it wasn't weak to lick your wounds. to sit up straight, exhale before marching off to battle. " she's growing up so fast... it's quite jarring, if i'm honest. but then i remember this is what i wanted for her... to be strong. independent. " everything i never was at that age. " she's in her twenties now... i was just shy of twenty-one when i had her. " adeline's face darkens as she remembers little sophia. she remembered what it was like, raising a young girl in this kind of life. it was never an easy task, and it came with unimaginable pain and fear. her smile returns at the mention of derin. she had always liked the woman. perhaps because, deep down, she reminded her of her. " how long are you supposed to be wearing the sling. as someone who had to wear one once... i know it's obnoxious. but doctors have their degrees for a reason. "
Reyan nodded and moved his eyes back to the drink in front of him. He wouldn't correct her. She was right to a point, but there were things she didn't need to know about. It was better for some things to remain as private as they could be. "That is what I keep telling Derin. There is enough to do here to keep her occupied." He smiled and lifted his glass. He wasn't sure if his wife would ever settle back into the city they grew up in, but he hoped that she did. "It isn't that. Sometimes there isn't anything more to add to a conversation. I've never been one that liked to hear myself talk." He chuckled before taking a sip. His father had always wanted to fill silences, but Reyan didn't mind sitting in them. There was power in being comfortable with them. "Quick retaliation only works to a point. It leads to things being messy, and we are better than them." He knew she would know what he meant. Attacking when children were present was low. He looked at her as she spoke about her daughter and nodded again. "Time passes quickly. It doesn't feel like she should be that old already." He had thought he might have children of his own at this point in his life, but he wasn't sure if legitimate children would ever come. He wouldn't pressure Derin for them, but he knew her family would. "Another week at least, but I feel fine without it. I will not be seen with it in public. I won't give them the satisfaction."
In true figment of her worst nightmares, he had the poor sense to approach and made a concerted effort to stop long enough to strike up this painfully casual chat. Nausea swarmed beneath whatever poised exterior she managed to portray, even the appearance of her martini failed at settling the twist in her gut.
Keep it together. Be cool. Aloof. Non-committal.
"Last I checked, I'm banished from Long Island not Manhattan." Evidently a taut, barely contained level of snark was the best she could muster. There had been a time long ago when Alara navigated uncomfortable discussions with ease, but they'd leeched that from her bones too. It's been too long, he says. And whose fault was that? "Don't do that. Don't make idle conversation as if we barely know each other."
Reyan kept his hand around his drink as he leaned against the bar and looked at her. He knew coming back to the States he might run into people from his past, but he had assumed wrongly assumed Alara wouldn't be included. His eyes moved over her before he took another sip and shrugged. "I didn't say anything about banishment, did I?"
He knew what she was referring to, but it wasn't a time period he visited much anymore. "It has been years, Alara. Plenty can happen in that time that can change someone. Or are you still the same woman from back then?"
location: vip section of High Note
closed starter (zephyr)
The lights of High Note always cast a certain spell, a warm, golden glow that blurred the edges of reality, making everything feel just a little more magical. Victoria thrived in that glow, her voice weaving through the air like smoke, captivating every soul in the room. But tonight, as her set ended and the applause rolled through the lounge, her sharp eyes caught sight of someone new amidst the crowd.
He wasnât hard to missâbroad shoulders, a commanding presence that seemed to take up more space than it should, and an easy confidence that said he was entirely at home among the finer things. Reyan. She recognized him from whispered conversations and fleeting mentions, his name always paired with intrigue.
She slipped off the stage with her usual grace, pausing briefly at the bar to grab a glass of something amber and smooth. With each step, the hem of her gown swayed, catching the soft glow of the overhead lights. And then, there he was, seated at one of the corner tables, looking every bit as composed as the rumors painted him.
âReyan, isnât it?â Her voice was warm, yet there was a sly edge to her smile as she stopped by his table, her glass resting lightly in her hand. âYouâve got that look about youâsomeone who enjoys the good things in life.â Her gaze flicked over the tailored suit, the drink in his hand, before locking back onto his. âI hope the music was up to your standards.â
Reyan enjoyed the nights he found himself at High Note. He knew it would be wiser to find somewhere else to spend time, but he didn't think the Serpents would be willing to cause a scene in one of their own spaces. He wasn't here on gang business. He enjoyed the atmosphere and the music. It had become one of his comforts since returning to the States.
He watched the stage as Victoria performed. She commanded the room, and he was happy to give her his attention. Her talent was remarkable. He applauded when her set was finished before ordering another drink. He would stay for whoever was next, but he felt bad they had to follow an outstanding performance.
He had lifted his drink to take another sip when she stopped in front of him, and he smiled. "It is." He nodded. Normally he would correct someone to use his last name, but out of respect he would let her get away with it. "I take that as a compliment Miss London, and it was. I would even say it surpassed them." He gestured to a seat near him. "Would you do me the honor of joining me for a drink? I am sure your boss would agree you've earned a break."
"Still cute though, in any case," Eloise shrugs, undeterred by the assessment as she removes her coat and settles into the seat. It's quieter than the blonde would like, everyone in the bar easily accounted for at a quick glance and a certain air of solemnity among them like they're drinking to drown their sorrows, rather than to raise their spirits. "Well yes I suppose you're correct but look at you, compared to me." Eloise tosses of lock of blonde hair behind her shoulder. "You have a... looming quality about you. And besides, I always sit where you're sitting. You should be grateful that I'm so graciously allowing you to stay."
"Everyone has their own opinions." Reyan wouldn't be openly rude, but he didn't share the same opinion. She was cute, but she wasn't someone he would have noticed right away if she hadn't sat beside him. He took another sip of his drink and let his eyes move over the bottles behind the bar. "It must not be looming enough if it doesn't discourage you." He looked at her and chuckled. "We both know that isn't what is happening right now. You're smarter than that."
