Star People - Story Board

Talk about project ideation!

I’ve been creating tools to help visualize my project. The drafts upon drafts feel cathartic and take me back to the actual dream. This process has reminded me of the original message the star people shared with me. I’m excited to portray the symbolism of the camera as the creation of art.

It was fun shooting video with friends who got to play parts in the final video and who remember the eerie residue I had after experiencing this dream.

Project Concepts and Goals:

With this project I wanted to share more of the magical dream state that I have experienced around star people (extra terrestrial beings). Through the project I wanted to share the message they gave and use the symbolism that stuck out from that dream.

In post-production I hope to create something more abstract that considers the different moods within the different dream worlds. I will be using saturation and filters to create more nightmare look during some of the iterations. Additionally, I want the film to feel dark but light and colorful at the same time.

I’m planning to be very selective of the audio, sounds and lines portrayed in the film. This is the first time I will attempt to generate sounds and put them together. I’m planning on audio recording vinyl slowed down as it produces an eerie tone.

My goal is to show rather than tell. Attempt to create a piece that the audience could either relate to or see as mere fantasy.

This project superseded my expectations and goals. I felt uncomfortable with the human and spirit interactions, my threshold in cutting my hair and the choice of tools I was able to use. At first I wanted to cut my hair with the machete but knew I would get much more attention. Secondly, I wanted to offer my grandmother something that I’ve been trying to since she passed - a braid. I wanted to revisit where her spirit gave her last breaths and connect my work to where her physical body lays. Every time I visit her at the cementary a hawk watches nearby or flys to or away. This time was no different. I knew I was on the right path.

I was very much inspired by Frida’s work.

Walking Practice - Class Exercise

Walk in someone’s footsteps. Try not to make a sound.

This exercise pulled me out of my element. Taught me to follow all. Not just folks I was comfortable with. Also, gave me the reality of need for physical exercise if I’m gonna preform more street art... I gotta be able to run.

Happening - Endurance - Process

A few images that have captured my imagination since I was young is of Frida Kahlo with short hair in a suit. As a TwoSpirit person my hair plays a vital role in my expression both in body and spirit. I’ve been growing my hair for my grandmother since 2012. I used to rock my hair short and appreciated the way the world interacted with me. Sir, was often used for me. With my short hair people respected my gender variance much more then now. It seems like the world can hold my masculinity and my identity as a transboi (not trans man) better when I have shorter hair. But for me having long hair is much more masculine.

I am very fortunate to end up with my grandmother’s chair. She too was very masculine. And I’ve been idolizing this process of taking strands of my hair, in honor for my grandmother, in protest to the attacks the Trump administration is pushing agains my Trans brothers and sisters and as an act of resistance/endurance and love.

Momoyo Torimitsu's piece Somehow I Don't Feel Comfortable is a 13 ft. piece installed in the Dikeou Collection gallery downtown Denver in an nondescript…

Two of the most striking artworks at the Dikeou Collection that I feel define 4D art depicting the ephemeral and time are pieces created by artists Juan Gomez’s and Momoyo Torimitsu. The entire wall framed with Gomez’s pieces that illustrate bodies contorted and sweaty through acts of sex is indicative of his capture of time and space. I especially like the movement captured through the drawings. The images where you can’t tell where one subject starts and ends to me talks about the nature of art, beauty and grotesqueness of two, three or four bodies colliding in during sex. I also enjoy the contrast of the caricatures the subjects are depicted in during such a serious, playful and sensual act. Seeing all the pieces at once makes me wonder if these were moments caught during one session or throughout a few, either way it travels the time in a way that is exciting.

The most impactful part of Torimitsu’s bunny piece was the actual inflation of the two sad looking rabbits. The process of the pump putting air into the identical flaccid plastics paired with the sound of the generator for me felt like a performance and actual happening. The process of the rabbits gaining shape and body for me was performative and depicted the structure as a subversive messaging.

The photograph that I captured from the room where Gomez’s pieces are hanging has one of Torimitsu’s pink rabbits peeking into the room from the door frame. I really enjoy this capture as it meshes my two favorite pieces at the Dikeou Collection. A kind of innocence portrayed by the half rabbit peeking but not viewing into the room where Gomez’s subjects are in motion speaks to me of a time continuum from innocence to raunch, youthfulness to maturity, simplicity to complexity. Torimitsu’s bunnies as the Dikeou Collection website puts it are, “erect and purposeful, but also in a space that such an erectness almost does not fit, both emotionally and physically.” Here the piece’s title Somehow I Don’t Feel Comfortable is so appropriate in its inappropriateness.

Art Intervention: Guerrilla Queer Take Over

Alleys of My Fucking Memories - The idea behind this project includes a series of intentionally placed art pieces in different alleys that include wheat-pasted images and stickers. The conceptual goal is to elevate the activities and his/her/queerstory of the land where the pieces will end up and their connection with the current state of such issue/activity is being addressed.

This piece will include: poetry, words, prayers, images, dirt and other materials.

This is step one of a longer process of where a garden of art will be created where people who interact can choose to take stickers, add to the piece or take with them art they need for their mind body spirit. Additionally, with support of other artists and community members I plan to create standing altarcitos similar to the Free Book Libraries around the city. These altarcitos will contain more art, books and videos of that particular space/place and time for curious people to explore.
