Reflection 7: Students access to technology.
We have stepped into a society that lives and breaths the use of technology. Not a day will go by that someone wont start up a computer, use their phone or play a game on there iPad. Using technology with in a school benefit but is also has its negatives. In the previous week we covered what type of dangers are involved with using the Internet and what can be come of it when people use it wrong. It is harmful to students and can bring unwanted imagines, unwanted pain and unwanted memories. These events can be emotionally scaring to an individual. This is why schools need to insure that schools have policies about what kind of access students should have to technology.
I see that the number one thing that all schools need to ensure is that they have a set of responsibilities that all students have to agree on how then are to conduct them self while using the school internet. This places any behaviors that the student does that is out of line on there shoulders, they have to uphold what kind

Schools have policies to ensure that the use of technology is safe. But should technology be used all the time. Is any amount of use with technology good? Should students have their faces in technology all day and all evening?
Should schools give each student a laptop or an iPad that they can use with in every classroom? Or should students only have access to computers when teachers let them? Only having access in computer labs or on the side of the classroom?
So what are some of the Pros and Cons with the use of technology in a classroom?
Accessing Information- students had to go to a library. Now they can search for things in there hands.
Editing written work- It can be digitally modified quickly which out writing out the whole essay again.
Communicating- talk through emails, chat rooms and discussion boards. This can help share information’s easier
Motivating Students – students can find school tedious, but technology can gain the attention of students. Classes can be repetitive but technology can recapture them into the classroom.
Lack of support- Technology can become a frustration with in the classroom if there isn’t support for teacher and students.
Time lost- connection problem or soft ware issues class is stopped and focus is lost.
New Skills- Teachers needs to have done the adequate course on how to use technology.
Management – Making sure all equipment stays working.
Coast- Technology is expensive and will decrees in a massive amount of value in a short amount of time.
You can see that there are many benefits with the use of technology. But I believe that they can out way the disadvantages that technology can bring.
But another aspect to look at how technology is use, you need to think is it being used too much? Schools that have every student’s using a personal computer or iPad for every class vs. a school that has set up designated areas where technology can be used. Or is one using it more than then needed?
I can be a benefit that students have access to the Internet whichever classroom they enter and all the resource and it is at their figure tips ready to be used. The teacher doesn’t have to waist time to find a lab that is free for the students.
When there is a question that the teacher in unable to answer the students is able to search for it.
Students are able to take notes while teacher is talking. With this everything will be together. The student’s notes, resources and ideas are all in one spot. They are ready to be put in an assignment.
But there is a side to this that teachers need to be carful of. While a teacher is at the front delivering information, students can be doing something completely off task and the teacher would never know. Also, students will most likely be involved with technology as soon as they get home. Feeding them technology twenty-four seven isn’t feeding their mental component for exploration and expanding there thinking out side of what technology has to offer. Technology does have its limits.
So let look at the other angle.
Teachers having designated areas for students to use computers can help students stay focus on the task that is at hand. Students are less likely to get distracted. School is able to monitor what students are searching easier.
Teacher can supervise what the students are getting up to.
Yes students will have more of a focus to get the task done. But this can be a time waster for teacher. Students don’t have as easy access to different kinds of resources. Students are un able to work together on documents with in a classroom setting such as using the help of Google drive.
I would recommend school give the opportunity for each student’s to have a computer or iPad. The younger year levels I would give them ipads and upper grads I would give them computers.
I would also recommend too set the classroom, so teachers could monitor what the students are searching on the computers and keep them on track with the task.
But ensure that variety of actives is being use so students don’t rely on just what technology gives them.
This society is growing in technology and it is the education systems jobs to make sure teachers keep up to date with the every changing world.
