14. If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

KUMQUAT

1. she is susceptible to the feeling of being needed.

2. she survives on short term benefit.

CBH

1. he is emotionally vapid. he feels no tragedy, and strives for no greater purpose.

2. he serves only himself.

RHUBARB

1. her kindness is a conscious choice, and she is selective of whom she extends it to.

2. she dwells in the physical world.

BONUS RULE:

by and large, their behaviors will be presented through a comedic filter as long as they are operating within the visible framework of “canon”. i think of it as the roger rabbit rule

8. What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?

i had to stop and think for a minute, but here’s what i came up with!

1. that she’s consistently honest and transparent, sometimes to a fault. not only does this cause nuances to go over her head (ex. what is and isnt unfavorable information to share about someone, what would be callous/make someone embarrassed/upset) but it also makes her a terrible liar. this is both admirable and moderately relatable to me.

2. she goes at her own pace and insists that nothing ought to be rushed. this is a lesson i’m trying to learn to embrace, especially since i’ve always moved slowly in a broad range of circumstances

3. she does odd shit and earnestly believes it’s no big deal (not out of necessity - but as a result of her norm). the difference is that i am incredibly anxious about these things while she brushes it all off with ease. she’ll fill her car with bluenanas and the shit doesnt bother her

4. something that occurred to me just now is the likelihood that a cynical, judgemental person who doesn’t know her personally could write her off as dense, when she is far sharper than she sometimes lets on. the latter might not apply to me, but the first half most definitely does

5. her pursuit to be grounded in the present. she values truth and righteousness and she works on a metaphorical ground that she can dig her heels into. she’s creating a life that she can call her own, and it’s not much, but it’s all she needs

there’s something about her earthy, earnest, good natured disposition that resonates with me just right. my best guess is that i probably use her as a tool to exemplify the comfort that i seek in life and i think that’s alright. it’s the fact that people won’t like her, but that’s ok, because rhubarb’s gonna keep doing rhubarb.   Makes me feel a little bit better about things.

18. What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?

that she wears contact lenses. i just think those are funny for some reason. the 1-3 surrogate pregnancies is the most major development ive recently thought of though i gotta b honest. Next to the contacts of course

1. What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?

i’m having a hard time remembering correctly, but if i’m not wrong, the concept of a gentle, kindhearted mom character came first! if it wasn’t that, it was her name, because she’s been rhubarb before she even looked like rhubarb.

3. How did you choose their name?

i can’t remember the thought process but it just sorta popped up. my mom has always liked making strawberry rhubarb jams so it was jostling around in my subconscious i suppose. but it stuck because it sounds like a silly, outdated mother’s name in itself, almost like a combination of Ruth and Barb. it was a natural fit for the vibe i was going for < 3 

7. Is there any significance behind their height?

yes! i consider her to be roughly around the short side of average (between 5′0″ and 5′4″, not counting the heels on her shoes) but originally, i was keen on the idea about her being super short (”5-foot-zilch”). i was thinking about the dynamic between she and shnitzel and how he’s super big and tall, being soft on this sweet little lady. i thought the height difference was really sweet and i wanted to emphasize it. these days it doesnt really matter as much to me and i draw her at about the height of mung daal, however tall that is.
