TIDES THAT BIND
Surviving four major flooding events is the very reason Riain Rising took on the short film “Boy” for promotion, distribution and worldwide screenings. Baton Rouge is currently under water due to record-breaking rain events. As climates and eco-systems change, the water will keep coming. There is an increased awareness that no area is safe from natural disasters. In catastrophic times like these there has to be less reliance on systems and more trust in our communities.
In Louisiana, we’ve learned to reach out and help directly. Renee Ragucci-Shelton (my VP), many of our associates and friends are donating food, making contributions, offering labor, and transportation. We have to come together as a community regardless of distance to rebuild our nations cities.
So when you finish your efforts to help please take a brief moment to experience Brian Hollars heart-warming short film about family after “Katrina” The film will be shown in its entirety at this years New Orleans International Film Festival. For a sneak peak, https://youtu.be/JGvnE46vF0I
The film will also be available on itunes, google play, vimeo, youtube, vhx, hulu, amazon and more in November 2016

RIAIN RISING LOGO STORY
AER RYAN
I always felt that the ability to fly was something humans had to create possible to get a better look at the world around them. It wasn’t long ago humans thought the world was flat. But the one’s that climbed mountains knew better. The graceful bird brained winged creatures of the earth knew it long before any of us. What I am saying is that birds of prey are pretty cool. Even the awkward birds are interesting. The link below provides a 1 minute video story about the 90’s origins of my logo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-UrjK1B3xU&feature=youtu.be&a
Since my closest friends thought I might be a Mad Bird I figured it was better than the grounded Do Do or the Popeye’s Chicken you ate last week when no one was lookin’. I adopted it and always intended for it to be my logo.
WATERY EARTH
I ended up below sea level because I got lucky enough to work on William Friedkin’s, “Bug” in the summer of 2005 the same year Katrina came. That storm changed everything. I am part drone, I started rebuilding immediately and most others did too. After a strong trek through some of the craziest years of my life I arrived to the year 2013. The storm water had long since passed and I was sitting in the bombed out sun porch of a flooded house on 9th Ward Studios feeding a stray cat named Bella. My little office was behind me and Bella was eating. I looked down and at my feet is this odd arrangement of leaves. They looked like a Phoenix with a dirt stain that looked like a crest of heraldry.
EVOLUTION
I had birds on my brain and so when Bella brought this poor unfortunate bird to the steps a few days later I figured it was time to take natures hint. Don’t be a Do Do like this cat food, go with the bird of prey, preferably one that can kicks Bella’s ass.
I was in need of a symbol for the next step in my film career. Watery earth wasn’t gonna be enough, I needed wings I needed a big wide shot so I could zero in on my next endeavor. After some back and forth with a graphic artist the evolution of the mad bird became the Riain Rising Logo.

NEW ORLEANS August 2015
August 2015 is upon us, and it is also the 10 year anniversary of a tyrant called Katrina. I had recently moved to New Orleans to start my full time film career 6 months prior to the Hurricane’s arrival. When the water receded all of my things were spared, no mold, no theft, no water, no way was I gonna turn my back having lost so little when others lost so much. The last decade here taught me how to re-build a community and a shape a career. I am surrounded by very strong people in a playground for creativity. The cinema, music, cabarets, costume play, theater and a general acceptance for anything oddly curious are apparent every where you look. Every day is a reason for celebration and every meal is a party The people are nice; whites, blacks, browns and everything in between co-exist with ease. Poor people, politicians, socialites and actors eat at the same diners, drink in the same bars. Everyone is accepted and no one is turned away. I once heard a Yat say, “If ya stay here, ya belong here.” I fell in love with this bowl of characters in the deep south of the United States. I am staying.
The Climb
Welcome to Riain Rising
June 2015 is only half over and the month has been exciting in many ways. I started this climb almost 20 years ago. The next plateau will have an amazing view. Hope you folks will check in from time to time to see the struggles and the rewards. The time is up and still rising.
