“Aren’t we all?” Sam drunkenly mumbled, not letting her criticisms get to him too much. At this point, he knew this was just how Ria and him operated. “Okay, now you’re just being crazy. I would look ridiculous bald. See?!” Sam sat up and ran both of his hands over the front of his hair to do his very best (yet, still very flawed) impression of him bald.

ria watched as he proved it to her, even letting out a snort of a laugh. he was right, but she didn’t have to give it to him. “you gotta do it now. girls will come flocking. or boys.”

Bloodshot eyes had become the norm’ for the past few weeks, not bothered by the confusion it had caused some of her classmates when they’d seen her. Why? It depended on the day. Lack of sleep was a definite, among other causes. With her mind somewhere else, she’d almost forgotten where she was, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she wandered through the crowded house to the nearest person she could find that wouldn’t bore her to death – anyone she could blab to. “I was promised one of those flaming shots if I came tonight, but I haven’t seen a firey-anything all night. I feel deceived,” she spoke over the music, though it didn’t seem very loud. Perhaps the only party this year that had obeyed neighbourhood noise laws.

“i’m about to set that kid’s guitar on fire in a minute,” ria smirked, leaning against the wall. she tried not to get too drunk on nights like these, where she was there more for business than pleasure. it was harder to do good business with blurred vision. still though, she couldn’t sit through this shit without a few in her system, so standing propped up by something had been her way of tricking herself and others that she was more sober than she actually was. whether or not it was working, she didn’t even wonder. “i’ll light your shot with it if you want. pointless, though. it burns all the alcohol off. then you’re taking a weak ass shot.”

“Maybe.” He sighs and observes the party. “So, why are you here?” he asks casually.

ria’s face clearly expressed what a dumb question she thought it was. why was she here? because it was her job. “it’s a party. does anyone have a reason to be here except to like, forget about their own pathetic lives for an hour?”

Sam instantly noticed the shift in her mood, but decided it was best to leave it alone and try to pretend it never happened. Besides, he was way too drunk to fight with her.  It was good – great, actually. Thank you for helping me see the error in my ways. That jacket was disgusting and weighing me down as a person.”

“no problem. i mean, you’re a lost cause, but whatever i can do to help you out...” ria droned. “you should probably look into a new haircut now. or just shaving it all off.”

“Probably,” he agrees, not wanting to argue. Despite regretting the last shot, he pours himself another and solemnly drinks it. “Can Superman even get drunk?”

“good question. maybe there’s some kryptonite soda around to fuck him up.”

“Okay, point taken,” he responded while looking over at the male. “I couldn’t think of a better way to spend Saturday night than watching you kick ass and also make money. It’s almost like old –” Sam trailed off, avoiding mentioning their former friendship. “Want another swig?” He asked, clearing his throat and holding up the bottle.

“yeah,” ria said, his previous sentence leaving her aggressive. old times her ass. fuck old times. she grabbed the bottle and took a long swig, not bothering to hand it back. if he really wanted it, he’d get it. probably. “how was ugly-jackets-anonymous? that’s why you were late, right?”

Callan sets down his now empty shot glass. “I’m pretty sure that last shot was a bad idea.”

“buck up,” ria rolled her eyes. “it’s not a bad idea til you’re throwing up on someone’s couch. you’d probably cry though, right? fucking up someone else’s shit? too drunk to help them out?”

“Damn, you got me there, I have no idea,” Sam remarked back, lowering his voice and looking away from the girl for a moment. “Nice one. Anything else you’d like to get off your chest while I’m here? Don’t hold back.”

“don’t get all existential on me here, i’ve got shit to do,” she crossed her arms, glancing to the side as if she was expecting someone. she wasn’t. she just wanted any reason to relieve the tension. what had he meant by that, anyway? she could literally see herself being unnecessarily mean to him, but something about the way he dealt with things made her aggressive. “yeah, you look stupid in that jacket.”
