Doctor Who Series 5 Rewatch - Starts Sat 3rd April 18:20 UK Time with “The Eleventh Hour”

The Journey to Saturday 26th June.

Eleven years ago today, we were just one week away from the start of Doctor Who: Series 5, the inaugural series of the Eleventh Doctor played by the wonderful Matt Smith, and his companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), her boyfriend Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and the ever illusive River Song (Alex Kingston).

Following the massive success of the Tennant and Russel T Davies years, needless to say Series 5 had some pretty big (sand)shoes to fill. And it succeeded triumphantly, with truly memorable episodes, a fantastic main and supporting cast and one of the best overarching series plotlines in the show’s history.

Without going into spoilers, the date the 26th June 2010 ended up being a pretty important date in the series. What added even more hype was that it was the real world date of the final episode of Series 5: Saturday 26th June.

Awestruck by this, we worked out the next time the 26th June would land on a Saturday: eleven years time in the year 2021. And, we are finally here!

And so, we are inviting you all to join us in this full rewatch of Doctor Who: Series 5. Whether you’re an old fan or new, reliving the episodes or watching them for the first time, all are welcome on our virtual sofa and there really is no better time to experience Series 5 (the next time this happens is 2027!!)

We kick off in a week’s time with the episode that started it all: the Eleventh Hour, conveniently celebrating its eleventh anniversary. An incredible debut to the Steven Moffat era, this episode is packed full of laughs, excitement, bowties, Rory’s Mini and an extra large helping of fish custard of course.

So I was reading “The Missy Chronicles”-

-and I saw the line:

“Shall I call you Hermione?“ Missy smiled as the vase seemed to wobble angrily. “I’m more of a Slytherin girl myself. Always attracted to the bad boys. I can see a lot of Severus Snape in me.”

For a moment I was chuckling silently at how Missy’s thoughts always flew everywhere

Then I remembered: Severus betrayed Voldemort because of his love for Lily. In the end, he was killed by Voldemort Missy stabbed Simm!Master because she wanted to “stand with the doctor“. In the end, she was “killed” by Simm!Master

You know what’s worse?

Both Lily & 12th doctor never got the chance to know that, after everything, their old friend chose to stand on their side

Honestly, I hate my brain.

For all of Thirteen’s niceness I think people underestimate how harsh and cutting she can be when she’s stressed and truly annoyed. 

Her most cutting moments are from It Takes You Away, The Woman Who Fell to Earth, the confrontation with Krasko in Rosa, and a little bit with Epzo in The Ghost Monument. 

“Furniture with a pulse” is a really harsh description about a facsimile of a person they all knew and Graham loved. 

Still, knowing this, I do like the moment when Thirteen does articulate a bit that she was sorry to see Grace go. 

But also:

Thirteen doesn’t have any time for Erik’s nonsense, especially when the universe they’re in is about to go critical. 

“Surplus to requirements.” Is honestly really, really harsh. And shows to me how much snark and biting commentary she’s censoring herself from saying. 

Erik proceeds to be an idiot and then I will forever love this moment: 

The cynical look she gives both Solitract!Trine and Erik. A full on: ‘Alright, mate, this is on you’.  

And then Thirteen proceeds to steal Solitract!Trine from Erik in under a minute as easy as 1, 2, 3. 

The Doctor’s always known their charm and effect on people when they want to. No matter how innocent they act, they know. 

This is why I continue to be mad at the Doctor as Ten when he acted surprised Martha fell for him. The Doctor knew, and its shown in Amy’s Choice when the Doctor’s shadow self, the Dream Lord started taunting the Doctor about it. 

So here, Thirteen unleashed a little bit of her charm and NGL, for me it had the same energy as Nine manipulating Rose into choosing him over an invitation to dinner with Jackie. 

IMO in this life, the new regeneration, the Doctor is trying very hard not to be this way. Her twelfth regeneration taught her a lot but that doesn’t mean that when necessary, when called for, or if the Doctor’s feeling petty or weak she can’t still trot out these sides of her. The snarky, biting, manipulative side. She is after all, still the same person just with a different casing.

2 years later and i still cant get over the fact that twelve and missy we’re literally crying and holding hands and he was all “stand with me it’s all i’ve ever wanted” but still the episode somehow…. ended like That. the fuck.

I know normal people don’t spend their 24th birthday writing a Doctor/Master coffee shop AU, but then again, why would I want to be normal?

Theta liked coming here. And why wouldn’t he?

It was a nice spot. When he sat down on his favourite seat, comfy, well cushioned seats they were, too, he could see right down to the river, where tourists were crossing the bridges with excitement written all over their faces, hair fluttering all around their heads from the wind, cameras almost always raised, only to sink down again at the realization that there was no screen doing this view justice.

He liked watching them. He loved watching people in general, loved the wind on his face, loved the fresh sea air, he loved everything about this spot.

It was a bit bad for his writing, though, because he usually ended up staring down to the river more times than he looked at his actual work. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to write – It just seemed so hard to concentrate, so hard to motivate himself to think the words and then pour them to the paper.

He came here every day, hoping for some miracle, some sudden vanishing of his writing block due to good atmosphere and even better cake.

Well. Fine. If Theta was being honest, the main reason for him coming here might have been the good cake.

Today was something else though, today was not going to be a good day – Not only according to his writing, which hadn’t seen a good day in far too long, but also cake wise.

Theta watched the young man on the table next to him with a dark glare, as he ate a piece of cake – the last piece of cake, to be precise – with pleasure.

It was almost like he was mocking him – Though Theta was pretty sure he hadn’t even noticed him. The way he gleefully, slowly shoved one fork full of cake after another into his mouth, closing his eyes in absolute pleasure every time he did – So theatrical, Theta would’ve blindly assumed it was all a staged event just to drive him into despair; If that wouldn’t have been a completely ridiculous thought, that was.

Theta watched until the end, every single fork, until the last crumb of cake had been devoured and left nothing but a weirdly hollow feeling in his stomach, that he quickly identified as hunger.

The second it had a name, it seemed to want to call for attention, and his stomach grumbled loudly for everyone in the coffee shop to hear.

Everyone being him and the cake destroyer, as Theta had lovingly titled him, because there was no one else in the shop, except for the staff inside, chatting behind the counter.
