The handsome boy himself who was quite popular at AN 2026
Writing TR fics is so fun and kinda challenging for me because I incorporate both 4kids and TPCI dialogue for Meowth because the two have such a different speaking manner despite having the Brooklyn wise guy persona and I try to blend the two as organically as I personally can. Working on my Meowth fic right now and and I will have him call James âJimmyâ and âJimboâ before having him say âya digâ in another sentence.
That post about most fictional relationships failing to land for them because they don't even have anything in common enough to share in-jokes reminded me that Musashi (Jessie) is the only one who laughs at Kojiro (James)' Pokemon puns...
Nyasu (Meowth) works with the joke too, even though he thought it was corny! He's got his own sense of humour. âĄ
By the way, if you want to hear a song that's composed entirely of Miki Shinichirou (Kojiro's seiyuu!] making bad puns while trying to impress a girl at a club, getting overconfident [declaring himself a KOIKING = love-king, but also sounds identical to carp-king, Magikarp's Japanese name...], then panicking and completely unravelling, look no further than Lucky Lucky. It was on the Roketto-dan yo Eien ni CD with the radio drama. ^^ It's unclear if it's supposed to be in-character or not, but it's funny either way!
I would like to think that Meowth was cheering Litten/Torracat on the sideline whenever he could during the Sumo saga, and watched outside Pokemon centre windows whenever they got injured as he would sometimes do for Pikachu as well, but I would also like to think there was a time when the reverse happened and Torracat acknowledged Meowthâs respect for them enough to check in on him as well, even if they didnât outright admit to Meowth that they had been worried for his well being. Maybe I will write a short fic about such a time even though I am working on my multi chapter Only a Pokemon fanfic about Meowth currently.
One detail I loved about the anime was Meowthâs strong empathy for Pokemon that reminded him strongly of himself, especially when it came to two of Ashâs fire starters. Even acting as a parallel to them of sorts.
Chimchar is an interesting example as a victim of abuse because while Meowth is not a classic example of an abuse victim- though you could argue his mistreatment as a street Meowth by humans counts as a type of animal/Pokemon abuse of itself-, or hasnât gone through their exact ordeal himself, he recognizes Chimcharâs abuse at the hands of Paul for what it is right away due to his emotional feelings towards other fellow Pokemon and resonates with their feelings of self doubt due to his own self-doubt at times. Despite that, he keeps looking ahead for a bright future for himself and his team despite their hardships, and trying to look on the bright side of things. As a result he is the one who urges Chimchar to do the same and contributes right toward their development. He even recognizes Ash as a good kid who would do anything for his Pokemon and friends despite the boy getting on his nerves, another thing I found so real about Meowth. The ability to know a truly good person when he sees one.
Then there is of course the more straightforward parallels between him and Litten. Both were abandoned stray kittens, and Litten puts up a rough and tough street smart attitude like Meowth does even when they are hurting much Like Meowth himself. Meowth takes a sort of paternal/brotherly role towards Litten due to how much the fire kitten resembles himself, and continues to respect them and remain proud of them as they evolve into Torracat and finally Incineroar. Like Chimchar, his empathy towards the fire type directly contributes to their development.
What is interesting is that in scenes together he can also be interpreted as acting like a Pokémon therapist of sorts to them the way he talks to Chimchar and tries to get Litten to talk to him when Stoutland was dying. It is oddly a position he is suited for with his understanding personality and experience.
Meowth doing the impossible by learning to talk and walk like a human whereas no other Pokemon has even though to take the time and effort to do so is usually brought attention to, but something that often gets overlooked is that Meowth didnât even do it for himself, he did it for someone else. Changed himself entirely and potentially warped his body structure for someone who would never love him regardless and even called him a freak who is even worse than he was before changing him self for doing so. Someone who wasnât worth it.
I think about how that entire experience of becoming who he is for someone else only to be ridiculed and labelled a freak whose existence is now unnatural contributes to his issues of abandonment and insecurity about never being good enough for anybody else. It has been established even without those exact word from time to time across the series that Meowth truly feels that way and even implied and outright stated by Maddie Blaustein that what he truly wants is to be loved. It is very telling that even with his current position in Team Rocket with two best friends and a third counting Wobbuffet who truly do care about him he still feels like he canât always even be enough for them if episodes like âacting true to formâ ânoodles roamin offâ or âMeowth Rulesâ as a handful of examples are anything to go by. He canât use his signature move pay day, he used up two slots learning to talk so any chances of being useful in battle are second to none, and even in his current status as a criminal he is often seen as a loser who canât catch a single tiny Pikachu. For a rough and tough Brooklyn gangster archetype, beneath that exterior he has such little self worth he doesnât even know if the only real friends he ever had truly do love him. So many of the things Meowth does does he does so to earn the approval of others rather than for his own happiness.
There is something so beautifully tragic about his character and existence that I feel had so many opportunities to be explored more within the show.
My current Iris avatar is, honestly, in response to someone being a jerk about Iris in response to me, but also, because this is genuinely one of the cutest BW! era shots of Iris.
How do you not find her adorable? Of course, there's no accounting for taste, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but Iris' cuteness makes me smile goofily and my heart explode into rainbows and sparkles. She's precious!!!!!!!! I love her like I love Shootie (Trip) and Lillie!!!!
Why was the xy/z anime so oddly heteronormitive. Like moreso that usual
pokeblorbos: #I also want to know if there was a reason for it being like thatâŠ#there were at least a couple utena references I THINK? so⊠???#maybe some of the writers wanted to so something like RGU and no one else understood the assignment⊠idk
Utena references in XY? Where? Are you confusing this with Rose of Versailles references (the Marie Antoinette and Lady Oscar cosplays Kojiro and Musashi do from time to time) or Sun & Moon (where Lillie and Mao [Mallow] cosplayed Utena and Anthy from RGU)? I didn't watch XY all the way (it was the first Pokemon series to disappoint and alienate me as a female viewer, fff), so if it was there, I missed it, but I don't remember ever seeing any.
There were Utena references as far back as the original series (Erika's episode is full of spinning Gloom frames a la the spinning rose frames in RGU flashbacks.) If any slipped into XY, this would be due to the old writers and animators loving to reference the shows they grew up with.
Also, XY is directed by Yajima Tetsuo, who is basically an ascended fanboy. He grew up watching Pokemon and so, when he got to direct a series, it did feel a bit fanfic-y. He's matured since then and he handled the AU movies well, better balancing Satoshi's inspiring heroics with his playfulness... EXCEPT his weird misogyny stll slipped in, where he tried to chalk up Satoshi's never-give-up attitude not to his single mother who raised him alone since she got pregnant at 18 and her husband left and never came home and inherited Masara [Pallet] Town's only restaurant in Shudo Takeshi [head writer of the original series]' novelizations (but it's also referenced in-show, so this aspect is treated as canon), but chalked it up to⊠something his dad said before he left.
"Satoshi has never touched on his father until now, but there is a reason to touch on this âparent-child storyâ, so what does Satoshi think about his father when he sees his father, Zarud, and his son, Coco? It was necessary to have been there. As can be said here, there must be a reason for your existence and action because you have parents who raised you. Also, Satoshi is a boy who can make friends with the same eyes to everyone without looking down, so by talking about his father instead of his mother, he snuggled up to his friend Coco. ăAs you all know, Satoshi is an energetic boy with positive thinking who never gives up. If the appearance of Satoshi and the origin of his actions are from his father, I think he is convinced of the reason for his actions, and I think that he is in line with this theme, âThe Story of Parents and Children.â Satoshi aims to become a Pokemon Master, but I feel that the existence of a family should be the driving force behind his activities. Thatâs because Satoshi is still a 10-year-old boy who needs parent-child love. By talking about your memories with your father for the first time this time, you can see that Satoshiâs personality and behavior originated from his father." -Yajima Tetsuo regarding the Coco movie, translation here.
That's likely why The Distant Blue Sky had even AU Ash's dad disappoint him one last time and fail to stick around (and he travelled all this way on such short notice... and just had to help a grieving family cope with their loss and let a boy he played with, who turned out to be the spirit of a dead child who never got to go on his own journey, experience what it's like to touch a Pokemon...), all of it piling up on him until he cried while eating his mother's cooking... that boy couldn't taste his mother's food anymore either...
I hated XY so much during its run and enjoyed The Mega Evolution Acts so much more, but then, at the end of those, Manon gets put out of commission as a fridged woman (a female character who dies tragically, slips into a coma, or is literally frozen for Man Pain for an angsty male hero's plot to progress) by proxy for Alan, where it's Hari-san (Chespie) who slips into a coma, but it renders Manon (Mairin) too depressed to do anything and... Fla-chan (Bebe), who???? She has other Pokemon???? You'll never see her again. So, we go from Manon sneaking onto an airship and running onto ice to save Alan's life from clashing Legendary Pokemon, to... well, her being out of commission for ages.
To say nothing of how she's not objectified in the Acts themselves and wears very baggy and boyish clothes to boot, but we just HAD to get a dumb closeup off her butt while she's tied up in Hari-san (Chespie)'s vines in her last appearance because of COURSE. :T
Also, XY takes a lot from idol anime and the idol industry is...... well, what it is....... and let's not forget Serena's parting words still focusing on becoming a suitable match for Satoshi. It's just... overall, Pokemon as (kodomo anime mimicking) generic shounen anime, but it's drawn and animated beautifully and has great battles, so it's popular with the fandom.
I do believe Yajima Tetsuo matured as a director in general and stopped coming off so fanfic-y and comparing him with his predecessors like Yuyama Kunhiko is Unfair because that man worked on multiple works, including Shudo Takeshi, before Pokemon, like Magical Princess Minky Momo, so we're comparing people who made classic works and had long careers before Pokemon with a newcomer, but the misogyny is still a valid criticism.
