Ace liked to live on the edge, that much was obvious from the amount of bad choices he made in life.

Very few things had limits to him, and even then, he didn't mind crossing them from time to time.

This time, though, he knew he fucked up.

Nervous wasn't the right word to describe what he was feeling, not even close, but he wasn't calm either. His hand trembled when he knocked on James' office, but he was never going to admit it.

He adjusted his clothes, pulling at his cuffs while he waited.

James shuffled his mask and black military baseball cap over his face, expecting a recruit or something akin to that. But he opened the door to find Ace Winston. The man his wife worked for, and the man who crawled under his skin to no end. His posture remained firm and tall, James filling out his 275lb, 6’3” stature.

He stood adjacent to the man silently for a moment, his eyes scrutinizing Ace as he stood above him. James’ hand flexed as it held his office door, resisting the urge to rock Ace’s shit without any questions asked. But he cleared his throat, his ‘Scary Commanding Officer’ voice booming in its low Southern drawl.

“Can I fuckin’ help you?” was all that James said, his free hand tucked against his hip as he stared down at Ace. “This better fuckin’ be good if I gotta look at yer ugly face to hear it.”

Arthur didn't flinch, didn't even blink. His confidence enough to place a hand on his hip, mimicking the other man with a raised eyebrow.

"This is how you usually greet people?" Ace asked, his voce unweavering, but inside he felt that chill that only real danger made him feel. "It's a miracle how Margot puts up with you, mouthy as she is."

When James didn't move, he let out an exhasperated sigh. "I want to talk to you about her. Can I come in or what?"

In James’ defense, he had already had it up to here with half of people he’d seen that day. For some cruel reason, he was drowning in paperwork while his Captain was peacefully on vacation in the fucking Caribbean. So, yes, James was already a little irked by having to play Captain that day.

He grabbed Ace by his wrist, twisting his arm around and behind his back, tucking it between his shoulder blades. “Fuckin’ watch the tone, old man. I ain’t havin’ it out with you today, too. Don’t wanna knock my wife’s boss’ dentures from his fuckin’ teeth if I ain’t have to.” He nearly growled at Ace, letting him up from the wall when he heard the older man grunt in slight pain.

“Fuck you wanna talk ‘bout my wife for? Better fuckin’ keep it respectful.” He said, yanking his mask off and tossing it onto his desk, his gaze harsh.

"Fuck," Ace hissed through gritted teeth, his arm burning like fire from the deepest pits of hell.

Maybe this was a mistake, but his pride wouldn't allow him to back down. Not in that moment, not ever. He wasn't about to lower his head for a fucking kid, to hell with his rank. This man was ruining his best agent and he wasn't about to let her go without a fight. First a baby, now he threatens to make her end her contract? For what, to play housewife for this brute? Yeah, Arthur wasn't having it.

"You sure as hell are fucking cheeky," he muttered, but loud enough for the other man to hear. "And I don't like that."

Ace's gaze was scrutinizing, like he was judging but also pondering his next steps. His green-blue eyes were dark with rage, but he knew better than to act on it just yet.

"You're getting in her way. Wasn't enough to get her pregnant? Who do you think you are, saying I'm lucky you let her keep her contract?"

So, yeah, I got some say as to what she chooses to do. I told her t’stay with’y if she was happy, and she was. But one word from me and she starts working for me. Gettin’ paid a bit more, too, I’d bet.” He whispered lowly, before backing up and taking a deep breath.

“Did’ya just come here to pick a fight? Because if y’did, I recommend you turn yer stupid ass back around.”
