New Yorkers say they’re willing to pay $400 a year for curb parking, so why does the city give it away for free?

China Builds Flats in Path of Highway | Via
Chinese officials were forced to cut a motorway in half to go around a block of flats after they accidentally erected the building in its proposed path then realized it would cost too much to relocate the tenants.
Construction workers had to squeeze the eight-lane highway into four and subsequently left furious residents stuck in the middle of a busy road. They had just been moved from their previous homes to make way for a park so refused to move again unless they were heavily compensated.
So the council decided to save a small fortune by leaving the flats in place.
The United States and China eat the most meat, and poorer nations tend to subsist on cereals and starchy roots.
Section 5 appears to have worked just as intended, enabling the greatest gains in minority representation in precisely those places where blacks had the most ground to make up. The question now – and the one raised by the Supreme Court decision – is whether those gains have been complete. Or, as the authors pose it in the title of their paper, ‘Are we there yet?’

What Atlanta’s shifting real estate landscape might mean for the future of the country.
Like all great ideas, this one came in the middle of the night. I was celebrating a finished story by also finishing a few beers and some Chinese delivery.
I highly recommend this piece from Austin L. Ray on using MARTA as transportation for a bar crawl! It comes complete with nice map graphics so you can plan your own route.
It’s great to see Atlantans getting on board with the use of alternative transportation for getting to and from bars. Drinking and driving was one of the crappiest components of Atlanta’s bar scene in ye olden days during the Buckhead Village heyday. MARTA is definitely smarter. Walkable neighborhoods help too!
Train enthusiasts (and travelers), rejoice! You can now track real time data on any Amtrak train in the country.
The States Where Women Make the Most (and Least) Compared to Men
MARTA’s Janide Sidifall…emphasized that the project was in the “early scoping” phase—the first step in a six-to-twelve-year process—and nothing is set in stone, including federal funding. But so far MARTA has identified a preferred alignment along GA-400 (they don’t know which side of it) and three possible modes of transit: heavy rail, light rail, or bus rapid transit.
Atlanta’s planned so poorly, it’ll take generations to change the shape of the place
Portland Mayor Charlie Hales, speaking on the potential for Portland’s style of transit-oriented development to translate to other places, such as Atlanta

This is Guillermo del Toro's live-action Mazinger-vs-Mothra film, in which Bang Bang and the British guy from "Undeclared" team up and he does the same terrible American accent and same John-Wayne-with-a-broomstick-up-his-ass strut that he does in that re-imagining of "The Sopranos" set in a world where bikers aren't all brain-dead rednecks. Stringer Bell gets to do his own interpretation of Bill Pullman's moan-inducing speech from "Independence Day" and Charlie Day and Ron Perlman are thrown in for comic relief.
"Today, FourSquare is releasing a series of timelapse videos spanning a year’s worth of data in six cities where the app is particularly popular. Each video covers an aggregated 24-hour period in the life of each city."
