As I said, here are my reasons why I liked pairing Lagoona Blue with Jackson Jekyll/Holt Hyde.
🌊 Lagoona + Gillington “Gil” Webber
Dynamics in the Series and Movies
Gil is Lagoona's canon love interest. Their relationship is depicted in several films such as Monster High: Great Scarrier Reef and the classic web series. However, the main barrier between them is cultural and familial: Gil comes from a family of freshwater monsters, very prejudiced against saltwater monsters like Lagoona. This makes him constantly hesitant to openly display their relationship, even hiding it at times.
✔ They have natural chemistry as aquatic monsters.
✔ They share an affinity for the ocean and the marine environment.
✔ It's the "classic" Lagoona romance, which makes it familiar to the audience.
✘ Gil lacks courage at times: he prioritizes his parents' approval over Lagoona's.
✘ Lagoona is often the one who gives in and suffers from his lack of decisiveness. She's carries all the emotional baggage.
✘ Their romance repeats the same obstacle over and over again (family acceptance), which makes it less dynamic over time. He promises to change… and repeats the same pattern.
✘ Their romance is boring and even in the movie "Fright On" they don't give a believable reason for Gil's return, it was just a "My parents couldn't make me change my mind and I came back." Wtf
✘ He doesn't defend her when her parents attack her.
✘ He allows discrimination and minimizes it.
✘ He asks her for patience, but doesn't set boundaries.
✘ Loving without defending is also a red flag.
🌊🔥 Lagoona + Jackson Jekyll / Holt Hyde
Although never officially explored in Monster High, I shipp them because they symbolize something very different. Lagoona is free-spirited, outgoing, and empathetic, while Jackson/Holt lives in an identity conflict: human vs. monster, reserved vs. explosive. She could offer him the understanding he rarely receives, accepting both Jackson and Holt. In contrast, Jackson/Holt breaks her out of the "just-a-sea romance" routine and opens the door for her to explore differences and taboos within the monster world. Holt and Lagoona have personalities that clash but complement each other: Holt is fiery, impulsive, and self-confident; Lagoona is water, calm, patient, but also competitive and energetic. This connection, stemming from feeling marginalized or judged, could give them a unique and deep understanding, gradually generating a complicity that transforms into romance. And their compatibility with Jackson is that they share a taste for science and hybrid nature. And come on, it's understood that she likes quiet guys.
✔ A fresh, more "forbidden" relationship with a lot of narrative potential.
✔ Lagoona would play an active role in giving Jackson/Holt confidence about his duality.
✔ It would be a pair of complementary opposites: water (Lagoona) and fire (Holt).
✔ Plenty of room for mutual growth: acceptance, trust, and breaking down prejudices in the monster world.
Gil represents a safe and established romance, but with repetitive conflicts that make Lagoona suffer more than she should. Adding that they were not working much on trust, for some reason Lagoona was insecure about Gil spend time with Lorna. And I think a relationship with Jackson/Holt offers a more interesting and narratively rich romance: it symbolizes overcoming taboos, embracing duality, and risking the unknown.
And honestly, would you be dating someone whose parents don't accept you, see you as inferior, and your partner doesn't really do anything to defend you or give you the confidence that you're good enough just the way you are? I don't think so...unless one have low self-esteem.
