[ Announcement ]

[ I’m about to disappoint some folks.

You’ve all probably noticed I haven’t been doing much with this blog. Like, at all. I haven’t posted anything IC in two months, for one thing. I honestly forget I have this blog in the first place, and when I remember, I just sort of... cringe. 

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t have the energy to keep this blog up anymore. (Hell, I made the thing on a whim at three in the morning when I couldn’t sleep. Not the best kind of decision-making, y’feel?) Life/stress/anxiety/depression piled on top of running so many other blogs that I do know to keep on top of... it just does not make for a good mix.

So. As you may have already gathered, this blog is being archived. I’ll keep it up for anyone who wants to look at it for whatever reason, but the inbox will close and I will not be checking its activity. If you need to get ahold of me, I’m on @fleshforsaken, @honordeathandhangovers, and @askioniasgatekeeper.

Rahovart dons his grey face-mask and approaches. "I am a grey mage. I have questions."

Jarvan raises an eyebrow, clearly trying not to laugh at Rahovart and his terrible disguise.. “I see,” he says. “What questions, then, grey mage?”

“Yes. How do you exercise to obtain your much strength?” Rahovart readjusts the mask as it begins to slip, accidentally snapping the band holding it against the side of his head. “Ow.”

As much as he tries to bite it back, Jarvan laughs anyway. Gently, he reaches out, tugging the mask from Rahovart’s head completely so he won’t keep hurting himself. “Rigorously and often,” he answers. “I can show you the training yard sometime, if you like.”

Lux doesn’t seem anywhere near as shy about the whole thing, merely leaning over to take a look at Jarvan’s counter and grinning almost triumphantly as she sees it’s stopped as well.

She may be only five years old, but now she knows she’s going to be a Princess when she grows up.

“I guess you’re mine, then.” Lux says, with the confidence that only a kindergartener can have, and wraps both arms around Jarvan’s outstretched one.

Because, you know. This is mine.

(Garen, for the record, appears to be more excited than both of them combined.)

Jarvan startles himself with a loud, enthusiastic laugh when Luxanna grabs his arm. He doesn’t even try to get away, because--well, it’s meant to be, isn’t it? If she wants to grab his arm like it was hers all along, then she can go ahead and do that. It’s not like it hurts any.

He does, however, wriggle enough to sit down on the grass. His play-fight with Garen seems to have been put off, at least for now, so he may as well get to know his... soulmate. Gosh.

(Soulmate and future wife and isn’t that an odd thought? Gosh, and to think he’d been preoccupied with what he’d like to have for lunch today.)

“I guess so,” Jarvan agrees, beaming a little. This is... this is good. This is nice. They have plenty of time to get acquainted, and his mother doesn’t have to worry herself sick over the possibility of him running off with a common girl...

This is good.

Lux giggles happily at the kiss, feeling very much like a grown-up and quite proud of herself for doing all of this right. See? She could hang out with the big kids!

When her hand is lifted, though, the numbers come into view, and she blinks curiously and turns her wrist over for a better look.

“…huh.” She looks tentatively up at Jarvan again, a thousand stories about these silly numbers popping into mind. She had been warned, over and over again, that they almost always stop for the wrong person, but-

He doesn’t look wrong. Not wrong at all.

Jarvan peers at Luxanna’s wrist, curiosity overcoming his decorum. That’s... that’s weird. He looks around, because there has to be someone else in the training yard, because he has other things to do other than think about girls, thank you.

But no, it’s only him and Garen and little giggly Luxanna.

Oh.

Well. Huh.

He feels a quick heat rush up his neck as he pulls down his sleeve, just to check, and sees his own clock has run down. Oh. Well. Huh. Jarvan looks at Garen. Garen looks at Jarvan’s wrist. Garen looks at Jarvan. They both look at Luxanna.

“Huh,” Jarvan agrees.

Lux blinks up at Jarvan curiously, not the slightest bit cowed by his title. So this is the Prince. She imagined him bigger.

“…well, you’re too small to be the Third,” She points out, still too young to have a filter, and Garen nearly drops his wooden sword.

“Lux!”

“What?” The child stares, bewildered, at her brother, unable to understand the reason for his scolding tone. “If he’s the Prince he’s got to be the fourth. Everybody knows that.”

He is very handsome, though- he looks like a knight from one of her books.

The thought makes her smile, a little, again.

“It’s, um, a pleasure to meet you,” She struggles with the words but gets them out, and performs a proper curtsy. “My name is Luxanna Crownguard.” She says it like a badge of honor- as if she’s accomplished something merely by owning the name.

Jarvan hides a laugh behind his free hand, waving away Garen’s concern once the fit of giggles passes. “It’s fine, Gar, it’s fine,” he says. He looks back at the tinier Crownguard and puffs up again. “The pleasure is all mine, Lady Crownguard,” he declares, with all the pomp and formality of one of Father’s nobles, and offers her his best sweeping bow that his scrawny body can manage.

Flashing a grin that he knows can only be charming and roguish, Jarvan dips down, taking little Luxanna’s right hand and kissing the knuckles just as he was taught. 

A little conspiratorially, he adds: “Just watch, though. When I grow up, I’ll be bigger than my father. I bet you I’ll even be bigger than Garen will.”

Lux is five years old, and there is nothing as exciting as sneaking outside to join her brother. He is sparring with a friend- always sparring, even when he does sit with her to play it’s never as long as he spends in the yard- in shining, regal garb even though it’s only practice armor. She will be scolded for it later, but she slipped away from the care of one of many sitters to fumble with the glass door leading to her brother’s practice ring and trot outside.

She is dressed in all the frilly, parent-pleasing garb that children are usually forced into, and her brother’s friend has his back to her when she approaches, the grass soft enough not to rip her tights, though she forgot to put on shoes.

“Garen!” Her shrill voice rings out and she breaks into a run, smile wide as the first day of Snowdown, “Garen, who’s that?”

The littlest Crownguard does not notice the static timer glowing on her wrist as she reaches the edge of the ring. She glances eagerly between her brother and the fancy looking boy with the wooden lance, still too young to recognize royalty in front of her.

For an eleven-year-old boy, Jarvan is--for the most part--polite to a fault. So when a tiny streak of yellow hair and frills comes barreling towards him and Garen, he has the presence of mind to only yelp a little bit before stepping back and putting the lance aside. 

It doesn’t take him too long to figure out who this bundle of yellow is, of course. Garen never really shuts up about his baby sister--hasn’t since she was born, as far as Jarvan can remember. And while she’s definitely a lot smaller and blonder than her brother, there’s a resemblance there, in the bright blue of their eyes. 

Without waiting for Garen to answer first, Jarvan puffs up his chest and recites: “Prince Jarvan Lightshield. The fourth,” he adds, solely for emphasis’s sake.

Lux laughs right along with him, raising her hands up to her flushed cheeks and shaking her head, “Oh, t’would have been a scandal if he had.” She replies, unable to muster any bit of the seriousness she’d been pretending.

“And besides,” She leans in, as if sharing a particularly elusive secret, “If I had let him in on the scheme, I would have needed to steal at least three times the pastries.” She pats her stomach and raises her eyebrows… quite possibly implying that her brother would have been a chubby child.

Jarvan puts a hand to his heart. “Your secret is safe with me, Lady Crowngard,” he says with what is probably over-the-top sincerity, but honestly, he doesn’t give a damn. “I would not dare squander this trust.”

He raises an eyebrow at the almost conspiratorial way Luxanna pats at her belly, managing to keep a serious expression despite how much he’s inclined to burst into a small fit of laughter. “Lady Crownguard, do you mean to tell me your brother was--” Here, he he stops to look around the room, as if searching for signs that they’re being spied on. “--fat?” he says, uttering the word with a tone of absolute shock.

The dawn air moves, crisp and cool, across the training fields. Though the sun has barely risen over the horizon, dozens of men have already assembled to spar with quarterstaffs and test their aim with the bow. Jarvan grips his own practicing lance, unaccountably nervous. He knows his own skills, of course, and he is far from bad with the weapon, but here are hardened soldiers, men who have already fought and returned from war triumphant. 

How will he measure up?

Partway down the field, he spots a familiar figure. A man who moves more like he’s dancing than fighting--and, indeed, doesn’t appear to be fighting much of anyone at the moment. Jarvan steps quietly towards him, just far away that he won’t be hit by the artful arches of that spear, and stares, transfixed.

Xin Zhao seems so deep in concentration, so engrossed in his own movements. It would be practically a sin to interr--

“Teach me,” Jarvan blurts out, and quickly drops his practice lance in his haste to cover his own mouth with both hands.
