Let’s Get Things Straight
The Origins of Neon City(District)- The idea for Neon City was planted in grounds fertilized by the dead children of it’s architects. The inception began with one too many senseless deaths at the hands of cops protected by a system that seldom condemned them, let alone allowed said offenses to see trial. No one knows who exactly started the ember that birthed the fire of change, only that a community came together, unified by the yearning for change. It’s known worldwide that for centuries black and brown people have begged for change, they marched, sat in, boycotted, even rioted. All forms of protest, whether violent or nonviolent ended the same; in death or in ruin.
The designers of the Neon Idea learned from the errors and struggles of their predecessors, and knew the way to win a game where the rules are forever changing is to appear to never be playing in the first place. With this guerrilla mentality in mind, a company called Europa was started. All the families of the community pooled all their wealth into Europa, turning it into a multi million dollar business. Once this was achieved, the company put a bid in for a large plot of land the government had deemed unusable. The area, substantially large, was labeled unfavorable due to the fact the land had yet to be deforested and its location wasn’t business favorable, to say the least. The bid was quickly passed through and accepted, with the government believing that it was the one getting over by being able to make such a large profit from land it would never use. Afterwards the land went unused for years, while the Europa company continued to flourish and grow. Sometime between the years XX00 and XX04 all of the original shareholders of Europa quietly backed out, accepting vastly large buyouts with the only stipulation being that the name Europa would leave with them, and all this was done unbeknownst to the world. Now freed from the reigns of Europa the shareholders, members of the community, began working the land and clearing space for development.
The whole task took little time due to their vast resources and the fact they were so far out nobody would see the commotion anyway. Their plan was to create a completely self sufficient community, so black and brown children could grow and live. If the “world” wanted no parts of them, and the examples of this were innumerable, they didn’t intend to beg for acceptance. Word began to spread about a bus that comes every third Sunday, early in the morning. Nobody knows where it’s from or where it’s going, just that families that get on it, and never come back. They board, with pets and any worldly belongings that can be carried on or tied to the top, back or sides of the bus. And anything they couldn’t take with them they sold. Slowly but surely, over the course of several years they moved every family out of the ghettos of a city called Metropolis, into a compound they christened Europa. The name was chosen for the company they started. A company named after the African goddess which Europe was named after. A company started with the SOLE purpose of funding a dream, a dream for segregation, a dream to just be. Also, since Ol’ Ms. Andrews was petty, the name was a “fuck you” to the government for being dumb enough to sell it to them. Although it took much getting used to, people began settling in nicely. Before everyone knew it Europa needed to expand, and expand it did.
The founders had plans set in motion, executed far ahead of time, that would enable them to continue to grow without involving outside sources. They engineered trees with bio-luminescence to give off a faint glow at night, eliminating the need for electric street lights, and creating less light pollution. They created a government of the people, every adult would spend some time in their life upon the ruling council, and recruited all the minority gangs of Metropolis to serve as law enforcement for Europa. They were recruited by a team of mothers and grandmothers who told them if they were willing to die for blocks that would never be their’s, why not protect something that will belong to their grandchildren’s grandchildren? Suffice to say, with a moving response, all the gangs were subjugated by a group of women almost thrice their age. Once they were able to rule and protect themselves the founders focused on reeducation of the citizens, they had the world’s best education programs and methods at their disposal and used them effectively. Every adult learned a trade of some sort and every child received academic and life teachings and those that didn’t wish to learn simply picked up trades. After graduating from school the founders paid for full scholarships for every student, many who would come back to use the knowledge learned, to help. Those that didn’t return, to live, continued to support by spreading the word of Europa or by financial means. By XX12, Europa was no longer a fledgling guerrilla compound in the middle of nowhere, it was on the verge of being a rather large suburb unto itself.
….. Neon City, is what people had started calling it, due to the glow it gave off in the sky.
