usually, he’d get it. if the situations were flipped, he’d probably feel the same ; you could only listen to someone vent for so long before you started to take on some of their emotion, and connell suspected he was the only person willa had left to offload the intense feeling that eugenia had so often inspired onto. he’d thought of those complaints as an unsavory factor of an otherwise perfect job. he couldn’t relate to any of it, exactly ( they were both favorites, that much he could recognise, but no one seemed to resent connell his position ), but he could lend an ear, offer his opinion, take it on the chin when willa rejected it and did what she wanted anyway. he should’ve hated her, probably, but he’d heard so much secondhand gossip about the younger longbottom that by now, he wasn’t convinced on half of it. willa felt things deeply & acutely : he didn’t doubt she felt the way she did, but he had sometimes questioned whether those feelings were altogether warranted. now, he’s just tired. “that’s ridiculous,” his voice is hoarse. not exactly as reassuring as he realises he should be aiming for, but a start. “because of…- because of willa? even if i HAD, once, now’s…- not the time to hold onto that. we both lost her.”

she probably could’ve led with something different, but eugenia’s decision to approach connell had been ill-thought to say the least. she’d originally planned to skip any sort of conversation with him, but that just didn’t feel right. nothing felt right anymore. she could’ve tried to steer the conversation in a different direction, she probably should have. there was a time and a place for this conversation and this wasn’t it. but eugenia was tired of running. she didn’t realized she’d been holding her breath until connell responded, a wave of relief washing over her as his words sunk in. “th-thank you,” she mustered up a smile, “i was definitely dreading that conversation,” she admitted, finally able to relax, though she was far from complete comfort. “i was wondering if you just wanted to talk about her? you probably knew more about her than anyone these past few years- i’d just love to know what she was up to.”
