also, in MASSIVE CONTRAST to that, in the lore the frostguard run an orphanage to raise children alone in the snow. i do not believe this is entirely altruistic -- though, given liss thinks no one should die alone in the snow, i imagine there is some kindness in it -- and she likely raises them to be loyal to her entirely and to become frost priests. however, it seems she personally visits the children and teaches them her prayers of frost, even if they’re not iceborn. which almost sweet. still a war mother herself even after all these years.

so i’ve been looking into what i mentioned just a bit ago - the fact that magic was once greater in the world than it is now and i was wondering is liss or the world runes had a part in that - and i’ve found a lot through the freljordian champion’s lores and liss’ own + her voice lines.

in the ancient days of runeterra, magic was great and everywhere. gods and spirits walked the lands and the feats of magic now seen to only be cast by the grandest sorcerers were common place. but this is no longer the case, and the ice witch is to blame. reading up on it, the lore suggests that the act of freezing the watchers used so much cataclysmic that is drained magic from the world. it drained so much magic that is sent the yeti’s mad and caused them to descend into savagery, it is also suggested to have split a large majority of the tribes’ spiritual connection to the wild gods.

while we don’t have much beyond this, we know the act of trapping the watchers required so much magic and even life that the main continents are starved of magic now, in comparison. 

this next part is going to be a bit of speculation: we know the rune wars occurred about a thousand years ago, which is about seven thousand years AFTER the war of the three sisters ( ie the time when the watcher’s were frozen ). i wonder if the world runes are remnants of the old magic, which might suggest as to why the void born are looking for them, to use them to undo the same level of magic holding them?

AND ANOTHER THING, so i don’t know how much you know about liss or iv.ern’s lores but like they reflect each other so well. both are like 9000 year old freljordians who sought great power. liss literally tried to become as ivern is now in her lore but instead failed cause voli WHO IV.ERN SERVED IN LIFE BEFORE and then became iceborn which were so powerful which WHAT DROVE IVE.RN TO LOOK FOR GREATER POWER AND BECOME AS HE IS NOW

i touched on it a bit with my new doc in the appearance section but can we please talk about liss’ physique. like she is tall but very thin. in parts of her lore (and i just realised i should add this to the card cause i wrote so much but forgot this) her hands are described as bony. she isn’t muscled. and back in the time of her youth, when the freljord was just about who was the strongest and iceborn did not exist, she would have absolutely been seen as weak. 

she eventually became this powerful sorcerer, in part to how ancient runeterra is described and now isn’t and i wonder if the world runes or her own actions effected that, but back then i imagine people would have preyed on her as a child. she would have had to rely on her wits and her words quite a lot before she had her spells. maybe even her sisters protected her in reflection to how they are martyred in her lore we know.

but then consider, after she was both of silver tongue and vast magic. imagine you are a barbarian lord before her, you see an army backing such a weak looking warmother. why? you think. you could break her like an icicle melting on a summer’s day. so you stand against her, striding boldly. this will be easy you think. but then, the ground would rupture behind you, the icecaps splitting to swallow your own army whole. and she smiles, before you too are undone.

i love the wide range of personas liss actually presents herself as in the lore. she can be this ominous harbinger of doom who speaks in riddles and rides a mount of bones. or a gentle winter spirit who allows the dying to rest their heads upon her lap and feeds them dreams of summer and peace. she is a goddess of healing. yet she holds an entirely separate persona as the most feared person in the freljord. it means liss can present her in lots of different ways to people in threads and so can have just such a wide range of interactions
