Oleander was born with a caressing soul, which made him compassionate and sensitive. His caring and reliable nature compelled him to put others before himself and always help those in need.
These traits were not wasted on him, for he was the only son of a folk healer who had taught him about herbal medicine and botany from a young age. As he grew into adulthood, he slowly began taking over the profession of his aging mother, curing ailments and wounds of anyone who turned up at their door.
One faithful day, his mother fell ill with a mysterious disease.
Oleander tried everything he had learned, but it was all in vain. Helplessly, he watched as her condition ceaselessly deteriorated.
He toiled during the day to put food on the table and searched books by night, until he found an old, cryptic Florilegium filled with faded illustrations, which supposedly belonged to his mother, although he had never seen it before.
Tediously wading through its dusty pages led him to discover a precious herb said to grow only in places where the influence of the old gods still remained strong.
As the cult of Alll-mer dominated his community, he knew very little about the old gods. However, from the whispers of the townsfolk, he learned about the forsaken dungeons of Fear and Hunger. A place so horrifying that many dared not even utter its wretched name, which the old gods were rumored to control to that day.
Oleander could not bear the thought of leaving his mother’s side, but each painful glance at her withered, dying form further persuaded him he had no choice but to say his farewells.
In exchange for tending to his mother in their infirmary, he gave all his meager savings to the church, which was supposed to care for the sick as their teachings promised, and with a strange dagger she had given to him strapped to his side, Oleander set off for the dungeons.
