Hi there, I'm Lark (he/they), a Pokemon Ranger based in the Fiore region (Ranger ID 5861-2959, Rank 7). My partner pokemon is Sedge the rockruff. This blog is a part of outreach and interaction with people- whether other rangers, professionals, or just curious folks. Can't wait for the weather to be warm enough to do some good gardening with Victor. Ringtown stays pretty temperate year-round, but there are still seasonal fluctuations. No one's seen the Seasonal Snorlax yet though so it's not officially Spring even if we had a warm patch for a few days.

I heard in Galar people trade applins to show they love each other... I've been doing history readings at my library, and I found out, there was this old tradition here of giving someone you love a luvdisc! But another book said luvdisc love corsola! So wouldn't it be better to raise them together?

i believe it's still a tradition in some areas of hoenn to give luvdisc to romantic partners. as far as participating in the tradition, i really just don't think it's a great idea, even if it seems cute. getting a pokemon as a commitment, and if you want to raise a pokemon with your partner, it shouldn't be a surprise gift that they aren't prepared for. a lot of these pokemon either get subpar care (whether from lack of interest or lack of knowledge) or get released/surrendered. we're currently working through our current batch of valentine's day applin at the shelter, trying to get them adopted out or into foster homes. overfishing wild luvdisc for their scales or to give out as gifts also drastically reduced their numbers in some regions, and some populations are still recovering.

as for their relationship with corsola, luvdisc use corsola as nesting grounds during their mating season. they spawn in coral reefs, and they'll frequently just take up residence in between a corsola's branches. this doesn't necessarily mean that they "like" corsola, just that they use corsola to their advantage. corsola are also sensitive, difficult to care for pokemon that require a meticulously maintained tank.

i understand why the tradition exists, but even if giving pokemon as a gift wasn't often an issue in and of itself, luvdisc are actually pretty bad candidates for the purpose. luvdisc form strong bonds with each other and will become stressed to the point of illness if not kept with conspecifics, and it's not recommended to keep them in groups smaller than six. because of this, and their need for a large saltwater tank with live coral, they are difficult to properly provide for unless you've got experience with maintaining a home aquarium. they really aren't beginner pokemon, and they're definitely not "surprise, i got you a pokemon as a gift!" pokemon, since you need to properly set up and cycle the tank before adding the pokemon in.

if you're interested in seeing luvdisc with a romantic partner, many aquariums keep them in touch tanks because they're so friendly. around valentines, a lot of aquariums will offer special couples experiences to go diving in a luvdisc tank too. that's a great way to enjoy the romantic traditions associated with luvdisc while both supporting their conservation and saving yourself the heartache of figuring out what to do with a pokemon you and your partner aren't prepared for.

Hiya Charlie! Wondering if you have some information about salandit- I've recently come into ownership of a male, little guy's a sweetheart. Read all the care guides I could find, but there's one thing that's just... Bothering me. Do male salandit really only not evolve because of malnutrition? Do I have to get him an everstone, or is that just a myth? I've never heard of male salazzles, and I can't imagine every trainer with a salandit isn't feeding them enough, but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance!

yes, male salandit have adapted to survive on a very meager diet. i wish the pokedex entries on them were worded a little better, because it's not exactly malnourishment. it's just that male salandit will only eat as much as they need to survive, and as such won't hit the nutritional threshold needed to trigger evolution. many pokemon in the wild will never evolve even if they're healthy, because evolution tends to require that a pokemon have the resources it needs to support a larger, more energy-hungry form.

you could give your salandit all the food in the world, but after a certain point, he's just going to start caching it for a potential female instead of eating it. that doesn't mean he's starving- just that his instinct is to be satisfied with very little. make sure to clean all his hiding spots frequently so you don't end up with a bunch of rotting food on your hands!

Summary of Quinn's Tropius paper:

Rum in the pokemon world is generally made with shed Tropius leaves. The leaves are much like sugarcane in that they are very sweet (owing to the pokemon's all fruit diet) and is generally the most commonly used for sweeteners.

Tropius shed their leaves twice a year, following up their twice a year fruit production. Battle Tropius may shed more often due to damage sustained in battle but twice a year is generally the norm.

Each Tropius generally has a favorite berry they like to eat. The type of berry determines what fruit grows around their neck. This also determines what subtle flavors can be imbued in the alcohol produced from their leaves. (Most main stream sweeteners lose these subtle flavors during processing, only very small farms or producers can retain it as their batch sizes are smaller and require less heat and agitation or adding in of shelf stabilizers to be able to sell in stores.)

In contrast to leafeon tea leaves (which rely on heritage pokemon and specific breeding to retain certain qualities in their tea) tropius rely less on pedigree and heritage and more heavily on care.

Many families who raise tropius for sugar or rum production keep their care regimens a secret for many years.

However in recent years it's become increasingly more popular to take on one or two apprentices for several years before revealing the secrets to them. In this way the traditions are preserved even if said farmer has no direct successor.

how safe would it be to get a buneary for a household with a toddler? My daughter has been obsessed with them, and they do seem rather cute, but i've heard stories online about them sending people to hospitals over the smallest things with their ear-punches. are these more isolated cases, or is buneary not good as a pet?

buneary can be great pets, but no, i don't recommend them to families with young children. the problem with these guys is that they're so mistrustful of new people that they tend to be actively hostile until they get to know you. this is why they seem to lash out at tiny things- they're constantly in a heightened state of fear until they become comfortable with their trainer, which means they need to be raised in a calm household by people who know how to approach them safely. their ears can indeed cause a lot of damage, so any small mistake could result in serious injury to a child. this isn't the fault of either the pokemon or the child. it's just a situation where both are set up to fail. it's best to introduce kids to pokemon that are known to be calm and tolerant as they learn how to properly interact with pokemon.

i find that plushies and videos do a great job of helping to tide over kids who really want a pokemon that isn't appropriate for them to have, and i'd also recommend checking if any ranger stations in your area have an ambassador buneary your daughter could meet! it's not uncommon for rangers to have popular but commonly released/surrendered pokemon on hand to help with education, and that would be a safe way for her to see a buneary up close.

do rangers use pokemon captured with the styler for battling a wild agressive pokemon sometimes or that's a no-no in every case?

asking because trainer manuals explain what to do with agressive wild pokémon, and these usually include making sure your own pokemon are up to the level of pokemon on the area you are

it is very rare that a ranger would attempt to use a stylered wild pokemon for traditional battling. it's just not something you should try with a pokemon that you don't know well, because you don't know what that pokemon is capable of. plus, attempting to engage an aggressive pokemon in battle often makes the situation worse and should only be done as a last resort. our stylers are made to calm pokemon down, so our priority is to use them to help the aggressive pokemon settle!

instead of battling with pokemon we styler, we might borrow the energy reading from that pokemon to enhance our styler's capability using what's called a poké assist. borrowing a pokemons bioenergy allows us to temporarily affect how the capture line of a styler works, which is much safer than throwing a random wild pokemon into the fray. if a ranger is absolutely forced to battle against a wild pokemon, they'll typically only do so with a permanent partner pokemon.

honestly, the best way to handle an aggressive wild pokemon is usually not to battle it, whether you're a trainer or a ranger! having a strong pokemon with you will help keep you safe in emergencies, but the safest thing to do unless you're an expert in handling aggressive pokemon is to try to leave the area without engaging with the wild pokemon.

Pokemon Crossbreeds: Diamond-Back

Diamond-Back is the name for members of the Squirtle line whose fathers are Amaura or Aurorus. They get their name from the diamond-like gemstones on their shells.

Squirtle

Diamondback Squirtle gain the sails of Aurorus above their eyes. The breed is recent, and was first bred in captivity. After the mass release of Amaura and Aurorus in the wild, the breed has become more common, but is still incredibly rare. These squirtle can be found in arctic oceans.

Wartortle

My personal favorite of this breed. Diamondback Wartortle gain the traits of Aurora upon evolving. While slower in water due to its body temperature, these wartortle are praised for their beautiful sails. They're very popular for contests.

Blastoise

These Blastoise are bigger than the standard breed and the water they shoot out of their water jets is very cold. Despite their stature, this breed takes the tempermant of Aurorus, and is known to be quite calm.

Why does my dwebble dig holes in rocks that are too small for her to move into? Sometimes I'll see her just go to town on one way smaller than she is and keep digging holes until it breaks into pebbles. She has plenty of larger rocks to move into if she needs to, and she seems happy with her current one. Is she playing or is she trying to do something?

she's having fun! digging is a pretty common behavior in dwebble, and sometimes pokemon just like breaking things. it's like the dwebble version of a growlithe tearing up a toy.

when dwebble want to use a rock as a home, they don't dig at it. instead, they secrete an acidic liquid from specialized glands in their mouths and drip that into their rock of choice. this helps prevent situations where they accidentally shatter the rock and also helps smooth out the inside so it's more comfortable. if she's digging at a rock, it's because she's having a good time and displaying foraging behaviors! you can even try getting rocks with small pockets in them and hiding little treats in them to encourage her exploration.
