Do you have any tips on improving my drawing abilities and posting online? Like drawing programs, techniques, growing your blog etc? I love your art and I really look up to you as an artist :)
I gathered some tips that I pay attention to when working! these may not be much but I hope they are at least a bit of use!
・Make a separate blog/account for your art, its easier for people to find your stuff when all of your art is in the same place. (I obviously haven’t done this cause managing multiple blogs is a pain and so all my art on this blog gets soon swallowed by other shit so uuuhh I’m not the best example here)
・Tumblr is not the best platform for art, especially not original art. I’ve found Instagram a lot more easier place to get my art out there. Putting your art on multiple platforms also means more people have a chance to find your art.
・Tag your art with all the characters, ships, shows that’s on it. Tumblr has a maximum of five tags that makes the post actually show when searching those tags.
・I don’t have much knowledge in drawing softwares, but I use Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop CC myself. Clip Studio is great for more comic styled illustrations, and Photoshop is better suited for realistic ones in my experience.
・Do some speed sketching. Open up a whole bunch of pose references and spend 3~5 minutes sketching one pose, then move to the next one. No need to pay attention to details. Just let the lines flow! don’t stop to think!
・Do studies. Like, fill a whole sketchbook page with just shoes. Get your friends to pose for you. Pay attention to the details, like how the shoelaces go over each other. I don’t do this much anymore but I have whole bunch of sketches likethese from school.
・There is no need for the lineart to be black or even dark. Play with the colors!
・For shadows, navy blue with the layer style set to multiply works for pretty much anything, but it doesn’t really create mood and doesn’t always look the best. Try using different colors for the shadows and try out different layer styles! The mood of the picture can change dramatically with just changing the style of the layer.
・colored filters can also make the mood of the picture. pic a color and try out different layer styles. “soft light” layer style is a great friend, but again, a different layer style changes the mood differently, even if the color of the filter stays the same.
・When creating poses, draw lines for the position of the shoulders and hips. It makes figuring out the pose a lot faster!
・When sketching a pose, whether you’re using a reference or not, start with sketching out the overall size and the proportions of the character. Draw a sketch on top of a sketch on different layers. Rinse and repeat as many times as necessary! Sketch the rest of the pose first, and leave the face for last. Starting your sketch from the face quickly leads to bad angles and proportions.
・Use different brush sizes for different parts of the picture. Thicker lines for outlines, thinner lines for details. Thicker lines for things in the foreground of the picture, thin lines for things farther away.
・Things in the foreground are more detailed than things further away. Things close to the horizon usually only require a silhouette and some minimal shading.
・When shading, don’t only pick a color that’s lighter or darker than the original color. For highlights, turn the color wheel slightly closer to yellow, and for shadows, turn it slightly closer to blue. For example, if you’re shading red, picka highlight thats lighter and than the original color and turn the wheel a bit closer to orange, and for the shadow pick a color thats darker and turn the wheel towards purple.
・You don’t have to turn the wheel a lot. Even just a bit can make a big difference.
For the end a few reminders:・if it doesn’t work out at first, take a break, and try again.
・there is no need to stick to a consistent art style. Tryout a lot of different things! You’ll find a style that’s themost ‘you’ and then you can start to improve on it.
・Art doesn’t have to be detailed or complicated to begood and interesting. You don’t have to force yourself tomake detailed art if you don’t find it enjoyable.
