From 14 Days of Romance Prompt:Word Count: ~1012
She was always so tired after she needed to absorb a new relic. The cost of high compatibility with the Queen was the slow burning and constant pain that came with trying to contain such incredible power. Eva took it in stride. She would sing to calm them whenever it hurt, when the cuts on her skin began bleeding, and then just as the whirlwind of chaos stirred, the sound of a sigh echoed into the air and the relics would become quiet again, like a child being soothed back to sleep.
Eva was strong, Jack admired her that strength. Yet that did not stop him from being worried for her whenever she needed to hold on to more than one relic. The pain would be worse for the next several hours until they could ease it. And it worried him how long she could handle it.
“Jack…” Eva’s voice reached his ears as he carried her to the bedroom in their base. “I appreciate the gesture... but I can walk by myself.”
A rare chuckle escaped his lips. “I’d rather not take any chances. Not after that little performance you put on at the Cathedral.” He said crossing the bedroom. “Besides, we’re already here.”
He laid her on the bed and with Eva no longer in his arms, he could get a much better look at her face. She was pouting, and he couldn’t help but flush a little at the look. Eva always had a kind face and an innocent smile. Which made the rare times she showed any pain or anger more heartbreaking. But pouting? Pouting just looked adorable on her.
He couldn’t help but smile, which just made it worse. “Stop smiling.” She demanded.
“Not gonna happen.” He said, then let it fade as he saw the freshly made cuts on her upper arms. “Does it still hurt?”
The question made the frown on Eva’s lips vanish and she looked down at the wounds. “She’s calm now.” She said and Jack knew she was not talking about the injuries. “It’s always singing that makes her calm. I wonder if maybe she liked music in a past life.”
Jack stayed quiet. If it were anyone else, he would scoff at the notion the Queen had liked anything, but Eva’s words and wonders always reminded her that before all this, they used to be human. All of them. “It’s possible.” He said instead, getting a small but thoughtful nod from Eva. He knelt down next to her. “But I was asking more about your injuries.”
The girl made a small ‘oh’ noise as she realized what Jack really meant, then smiled. “No, they don’t anymore.” She said with a sigh, closing her eyes for a second before reopening them. “It’s always the worst just as I receive the relic. I can still hear and feel the thoughts of the last successor before they fade into nothing, the relic is at its most volatile then.”
She then looked at him. “Of course, I have your excellent medical care to thank too.”
Seeing her smile made him look down to hide part of his face. Her smiles always made his heart skip a beat. “It’s important you stay healthy.” He said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a blood bead. “Here. Just in case.”
Eva lifted her hand up and took the bead, moving it close to her.
“I was beginning to feel peckish.” She said. Jack watched as she brought the bead to her lips and let her teeth piece its skin. She drank slowly, enjoying the taste. Before long, the bead was empty and Eva let it drop to the floor. Jack glanced down at it, then at the young woman, seeing her eyes were heavier. The pain from the relics combined with a ‘full stomach’ had caused her fatigue to become stronger.
“Get some rest.” He said, getting her attention.
“Are you going to leave without me again?”
The words made his hand twitch, like someone had nicked him with a knife. He shook his head, “I’m done going out today.” He gave the young revenant he encountered an offer and just needed to wait for an answer. He reached out and pushed some of Eva’s hair out of her face. “I’ll stay. Promise.”
His words made her smile, and she closed her eyes. “Thank you, Jack.”
He kept his word. Aside from putting his sword and blood veil away, he made himself comfortable in the room, listening for any Lost that might get too close to their home base. He watched Eva sleep, her chest rising and falling with every breath. She made a small grunt, and he got up, at first thinking she might be in pain, then saw her roll over and curl up a little, her face becoming relaxed again.
He wondered if she was having a nice dream. He walked over and knelt down to get a better look at her face. In her sleep she looked so peaceful. She could rest and forget about the world around them. No revenants, no successors, no Lost. Just a time she could enjoy her life when she was human. He reached up and brushed some hair out of her face again, this time it falling back into place.
His eyes fell on her lips. A little dry and somewhat chapped from the environment and yet inviting at the same time. He felt the heat on his face. “Eva…”
He leaned in and placed a soft kiss at the corner of his lips. It was a move he found himself both pleased and startled by. To steal a kiss… it was strange, especially since she was not even his to steal kisses from. But a part of him wished someday she could be.
He got up and moved from the bed to the window. It was quiet. Perhaps they would have a day to rest after all.
