It happened sometime before their divorce, as well as her cheating. It’d been one of their more pleasant days; Yoh wasn’t distracted by his work and Risako was in a good mood, more affectionate than she’d been in a while. Alcohol was broken out and drunken kisses were exchanged, eventually leading the pair to their shared bedroom ( which was less and less shared as the days passed ). But that night of passion was the last, their relationship quickly spiraling further into the ground. Risako couldn’t take the obvious unrequited love, which led to their inevitable divorce.
Two weeks after the papers were signed and finalized, Risako was given news her brain wasn’t sure how to process.
She was pregnant.
Upon first hearing the words, she was ashamed to admit she wasn’t sure who the father was. She’d been sexually active with two men in and around the same time -- Yoh and Reiji. After checking a few dates and confirming how far along she was, Risako had no doubt in her mind who the father was. The biggest problem, as well as her fear -- telling Yoh Miyagi that he was going to be a father. She was terrified and unsure of what steps to pursue. Would Yoh be angry at her? Would he push her away? Would he ask her to get an abortion? She knew the man long enough to know her fears were more than unlikely, as Yoh wasn’t that kind of man. It still terrified her regardless. She hated how he made her feel, how weak she could be under her feelings for him.
She still loved him.
“Thanks for letting me swing by. I don’t know how I still managed to forget stuff.” Nearly two months had passed since the divorce. Things between Risako and Yoh were civil, almost too much so. It bothered the woman that her ex didn’t appear to even hate her for what she’d done. He acted as if nothing happened, which hurt. There was also no mention of her pregnancy, as Risako wasn’t intending to tell him anytime soon. She knew it was unfair to him; Yoh deserved to know she was pregnant with his child. But she couldn’t bring herself to utter the words.
As she reached down to grab one of the bags she'd forgotten with Yoh, a sharp pain pierced from within her abdomen. The suddenness and intensity of it caused her to double over and tightly grip her midsection. What she was feeling was worse than the period cramps she usually got; it felt like someone was persistently driving a knife into her abdomen over and over. Breathing through her teeth she fell down to one knee, using both hands to hold her middle. A whimper passed through her lips. She didn’t know what was wrong and it scared her, especially with the knowledge she was carrying a baby.
We grownups sometimes realize stuff after we lose things.
