At the beginning of April, I conducted my first binaural recording as part of a student project. Matt Rosner is a student in Art and Design and he wanted to re-imagine an experience through sound, specifically by creating a binaural recording. In this case, he wanted to record the process of building a box from scratch. He came to my department at the University of Michigan, the Digital Media Commons and we set up a recording session to record his experiment.
Matt and a colleague, Nic came to the studio and built a box from scratch, while I used a binaural dummy head to capture the process. The end result was a box that Matt and Nic created with a pair of headphones coming out from inside the box. The headphones were hooked up to an mp3 player that was playing the binaural recording of the process of building the box.
