— HIGHLIGHTING 101

To be honest, it took me quite a while to figure out the highlighting system that actually worked for me. Back then, whenever I’d see people using different colors of highlighters I’d wonder “What do you need the various colors for anyway?!” But years later I finally found out why—color coding your highlights makes it easier for you to understand and organize the information that is being provided by the text. Plus, it makes note-taking so much easier.

With that in mind, here’s how I color-code my highlights whenever I’m working through my readings. You may interchange the colors as you please so as to make it suitable to your own learning process.

Pink

Terms

Headings

Any term, phrase, or sentence that introduces a new topic/idea

Blue

Definition

Usually any phrase that follows the term

Yellow

Key concept

The key point/s a paragraph wants to say

Basically the overall idea of a paragraph, if present

Purple

Names

Dates

Anything that suggests a particular person, place, or event

Orange

Examples presented by the text

Green

References cited by the text

Book titles, article titles, literally any outside source that may be useful to later references

Gray

Miscellaneous information

This wraps it up for me. I’m not saying you limit yourself to just 7 categories, but for me having this much is enough. It’s always fun to experiment and work your way around! Hope this helps!
