Offerings to Dionysus
Chinese emperor Ai of Han, fell in love with a minor official, a man named Dong Xian,
and bestowed upon him great political power and a magnificent palace. Legend has it that one day while the two men were sleeping in the same bed, the emperor was roused from his sleep by pressing business. Dong Xian had fallen asleep across the emperor’s robe, but rather than awaken his peaceful lover, the Emperor cut his robe free at the sleeve.
Thus “the passion of the cut sleeve” became a euphemism for same-sex love in China.

A Saint or a Witch, or both? Saint Lucia 🕯️🧹🕯
She emerges crowned in flame on the longest night, bringing light where darkness slithers.
Her name shares the same root as Lucifer – “Light Bearer.”
Once the morning star heralding dawn, ancient feminine force piercing winter’s veil 🌟 In Sweden she is the gentle maiden in white, singing of returning sun. Saffron eye buns glow golden like solstice promises. But in older Nordic lore she is Lussi – fierce witch-queen of Lussinatt.
With her wild entourage (Lussiferda) she flew through storms and the night. Lussi checks barns and homes: work unfinished invites her wrath, preparation earns her blessing.
An ancient initiatrix of the dark season.
Scholars trace her further back:
• Juno Lucina – Roman goddess who “brings children to light” in birth
• Diana Lucifera – the torch-bearing huntress
• Connections to Beatrice (Dante’s guide) and even Persephone’s return
She is the threshold guardian.
Light cannot exist without shadow; mercy without boundaries.
In personal craft, call on Saint Lucia / Lussi to:
• Reveal hidden truths (work with mirrors or scrying bowls lit by candle)
• Protect liminal spaces (doorways, winter nights)
• Guide safe passage through birth, death, or initiation
Ritual ideas:
• Crown yourself with candles (safely – or on a stable wreath) wrapped in ivy
• Bake or offer saffron buns (lussekatter)
• Pour red wine or warm glögg as libation
• Meditate on restored sight – her eyes were plucked yet returned clearer
Light a red candle on December 13th (or any long night) and whisper:
“Lucia, Light-Bearer, show me what the darkness hides and what the light demands.”
The ritual work can proceed 13 nights of bringing light, warding, weaving protections for the coming year, setting intentions and reflecting back on the year that is about to pass as the nights grow darker.
She teaches that true vision often requires walking through fire – literal or metaphorical.
In the heart of winter, the flame is born.
