And when I showed her the classic film “Napoleon Dynamite” she smiled and asked “Why are you always showing me this weird stuff?”

In Honor of Indigenous People's Day.

Rita Utah honored and loved Native Americans and their Cultures. She made this whistle as a sign of solidarity and respect.

Having been raised in a Mormon family who’s ancestors had pioneered west, Rita could not sit quietly by without expressing her heartfelt emotions, based on truth through her art. I’m so proud to have had her as my Grandmother.

Part of a collage I worked on with my Grandmother. It was her last piece.

Making the collage was a long process of many layers. We just kept gluing. Even when I said “Enough!” It wasn’t for her.

In the end, it became a butterfly and she said “See, it’s a butterfly!” She was tickled.

At my Grandmother’s House and Studio for the last time before it was sold. February 2014.

Her home was the place everyone in our family, immediate and extended, called home. Because she was there and Grandpa Mac was there. Everyone always felt so good to be there and to bring friends. To laugh and talk and eat with Rita and Mac and with each other. To sit so comfortably in a place filled with Rita Utah’s Art, while loud, joyful music played either live or on the stereo. To be able to look out at the view of the valley so magical it looked like it was taken straight out of Fairy Tale- but it was real, people!!! Everyone was always very aware that they were in a very special place.
