Hanebado! - Episode 8 (A.K.A Nagisa Aragaki’s biceps showcase).

JUST LOOK AT THOSE ARM MUSCLES!

It has been clear since the beginning of Hanebado that Nagisa has a bigger build than the rest of the girls in the series. Her coach has even told her that both her playing style and the fact she’s taller and has more muscle mass put a lot of strain on her legs, specially her knees.

However, while it has been implied that Nagisa is muscular, this was the first time this was showcased in her upper body rather than just her legs.

I really love the animation quality and the muscle detail we see in Hanebado!… It just kinda sucks that this is probably LIDEN FILMS’s way of telling us “Yeah, Nagisa is buff. We just don’t draw her like that all the time”. But to be completely fair, the manga also does this thing where they only emphasize Nagisa’s muscle definition during matches so not much of a choice for the animators I guess. 

Our lovely tomboy is so proud of her muscles (which sadly are only visible to her). Now let’s compare this with some awesome in game panels. 

Now we can see the muscles we have been told she has. Is important to point out that Badminton isn’t a sport that requires for the players to build a lot of muscle (they need to be quick as hell on the court) so Nagisa seems to be more like an exception to the rule. At the end of the day, let’s not forget that Hanebado!, while a sport series, is still a show led by a cast full of “cute girls” so maybe the author thought that depicting her muscular build could go against the aesthetics of her character design.  If that means that atleast we’re getting more scenes like the one we just got in episode 8, then I don’t see why anyone would complain.
