“Ever tried looking around?” Kids always want to have things easily, it seems. He points at a random direction, nonetheless. “If you do, you’ll find it. Try a map, too.” A very unhelpful and unfriendly advice, but it’s not like he was getting anything else from Silver.

Personal space? Oh, Gold’s making the space personal, alright — as soon as Silver consents for real, he grabs the guy’s wrist, pulling him forward and off on another adventure. Of course, there’s no way he’s not getting chewed out for that (and getting scowled out, and getting his wrist slapped away), but it’s worth it. Why? ‘cause Silver just agreed to play with him for once.

He’d say it’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing, but Silver’s better than that now. His posture is frigid and his words cut cold —

But he’s not the ice king he used to be.

‘… here, I guess?’ Gold says, twenty minutes and two trips there and back later. They had to get his game system at home, but moaning zombies outside doesn’t do a lot for the atmosphere. Instead, he carts Silver to this place in the fifth Sector that lets them borrow a room and a TV for chunk change, which is really all they need. People can be nice sometimes, here.

And so can he. The boy waggles the second-player controller in Silver’s face before he tosses it to him, turning back to the console solemnly.

‘S’not Digipong, by the way. Digimon,’ he corrects himself, twenty minutes and three of Silver’s fucks too late. ‘Supposed to be about “taming monsters or something.” Sounds lame — but it’s actually a lot of fun. The combat’s basically impossible.’ Which to someone like him, is a good thing… but it’s also an ominous warning. Gold likes challenges that most people would find insane.

If Silver wasn’t always prepared for dumb shit from him, then this definitely would’ve thrown him for a loop. So how about that?

‘There’s a whole story mode and everything, but I think you should just let me kick your ass.’ He throws another competitive grin his rival’s way and touches the back of his hat. Can’t even take the thing off indoors. ‘Sound good to you?’

‘Or are you too scared?’

As expected, he yanks his arm away from his rival’s grasp (roughly, almost violently, indifferent to whether it hurt his fingers or not) as soon as he reacts to his touch. The scientists could change the focus of their research from whatever they want to do to Gold’s ability to let one’s words go in and out through his ears without understanding anything they say. 

Even though the zombies aren’t enough to scare him as much as he was expecting (passing through so many disturbing situations as a child in the headquarters of Team Rocket had its ‘benefits’), beating his rival down to the symphony of undead moaning doesn’t seem so nice. He’s, in a way, relieved once they find a better place, but on another hand...

“Huh. Sounds awfully familiar.”

It’s just weird.

Because not even once in his life had he considered the possibility of spending some time casually playing videogames with someone, but mainly not with him. His voice has edges of tension, although they’re very well hidden underneath his natural coldness. His hands grasp the controller, eyes shifting to the television.

“Shut up, will you? There’s no way in hell you’re going to win.” He says, in that old challenging, prideful way of his that could easily intimidate someone not used to his brash mannerisms. “No going easy either. I’ll just crush you whether you try to put a fight or not.”

“What gave it away?” Mokuba sighed. 

“I need to get to the bus. I know it passes through each Sector but… where?”

“Everything about you just screams ‘hey, I’m new, help me’.”

“Try the stations. There’s one nearby.”

“— So, I’m lost.”

“Do you think you could help me?”

“Lost? You’re new?” Because obviously one can’t get lost in this city, right?

“Where are you going.”

The guy’s name definitely isn’t ass, but it’s so appropriate that Gold decides to accept it anyway. The workings of a grin are starting to form on his face, but when Silver turns on him with something like conditional acceptance, he — his jaw goes slack, and for a second, he just stares. Oh. So the guy can… he can actually not be a spoilsport? Who knew.

'Like what? Go on a date?' he says with a scoff, rolling his eyes and crossing his arms. 'I was thinking stuff like video games — TV, if we can even find something you like.' If Silver can even watch TV without trying to blow up the screen with his mind, anyway. Now that he’s got an honest, actual, real-life acceptance, Gold’s mind is starting to run wild with the possibilities.

'Don't even know why you're getting so paranoid. There's not a lot we can do.  —except, I mean.' Here comes his devilish grin, something mischievous lighting his eyes. 'Stole some of Kotone's games the other day. One of them's, like — Digipong, or whatever? We could try that.’ Clearly, this petty form of revenge has pumped up his ego. ‘Or you could talk shit about the people around here. I dunno. Whatever you normally do when you’re by yourself.

'C'mon!' He's back in Silver's space, all smiles — but at least he's not too close this time, right? He hovers somewhere nearby, sounding excited.

But it’s tempered, compared to normal. It’s almost like he doesn’t want to blow this chance.

'It can't be that bad. We’ll think of something.’

It can’t be that bad. 

For someone who can be as pessimistic as Silver, specially when it comes to Gold’s schemes, this sentence means the exact opposite of what it was supposed to mean. But playing video games? His favorite hobby? It’s not like Gold could completely ruin it. Right?

“You shouldn’t be stealing shit like that. And like hell I’d waste time gossiping around. Who do you think I am? Her?” Disregarding the mild hypocrisy coming out from someone who used to steal items and Pokemon in the past, the teenager doesn’t berate him for doing so. Kotone isn’t a saint either — far from that, actually — and even if she were, he wouldn’t forgive all the trouble she caused just to play a game. 

“Personal space.” A simpler way to tell him to fuck off. The scowl in his face disappears, though; gives place to a calm countenance that probably won’t last much. “Digipong? What’s that.” Silver doesn’t know what is the game Gold’s referring to, but the name doesn’t sound strange at all. He takes many things into account before giving a finishing response to the proposal.

“Fine, whatever, let’s go.” A chance to have some fun (even though he had it once and it was awful), forget about the obnoxious atmosphere of the city and to humilliate his rival’s ass? He won’t pass this time. Maybe, only maybe, it won’t be that bad, indeed.

And for Silver, a small bag of chocolates shaped like little heartsies. Happy Valentines, hot head.

Even though the shape of the chocolates is something absolutely ridiculous and cringeworthy, Silver can’t say he hates it. Chocolate is chocolate, after all, and he accepts the gift, albeit a bit reluctantly.

Silver doesn’t say ‘thanks’, but nods at the gym leader. Happy Valentines, ghost dad.

Gold huffs and backs away a fraction of an inch, smearing a hand over his face. You’d think he’d be taking offence at Silver’s tone, or his expression, or how he treats him like he’s garbage, honestly. But nope; he doesn’t even seem fazed. Rather, it’s the mention of Kotone that’s got him groaning.

'Do I look like I’m into that crap?’ he says, pointlessly; in Silver’s eyes, he’s into anything that even remotely involves friendship or happiness. It figures. ‘You should see her lately — she’s gaga for this stuff. She keeps gossiping with people and talking about some dude that’s her “senpai.”’ He wrinkles his nose and looks away. Why do girls have to be… girls?

At least Silver’s got his back.

'Hey. Do you wanna just like…'

'Hang out for a day? Avoid that shit?' He bounces on the balls of his feet, again looking hopeful. 'Unless Kotone decides you need a date or somethin'.'

Sparing a second of his time to pay attention to the trainer, he notices there's no shit-eating grin stretching from ear to ear in his face, or something remotely similar to what he was expecting from him. The lack of a more enthusiastic response makes him feel slightly at ease. 

"That 'Ass' guy or something like that?" Silver draws out a dissatisfied sigh, shrugging dismissively, clearly not bothering to remember the name of his friend's possible crush. "Yeah, that guy's nothing new. I don't know what's this fuss all about, it's just a commercial date to make people buy more stuff. It's pointless." Thinking about it, couples could do the chocolate thing any day. It doesn't make sense to him, who has zero experience with romance, dates and all that useless load of crap that only gets in the way.

It's kinda weird to know Gold's just the same, despite the appearances.

"What." The request had clearly taken him aback. It shows as his brows quirk upward and his voice raises ever so slightly, with a rude rejection building up in his throat almost automatically. But instead of that, after for once considering it for a moment or two, what leaves his mouth is:

"I have nothing better to do now. But I won't do anything ridiculous."
