Hippo Table by Derek Pearce
This is a perfect table
Hippo hour! Like Happy Hour but…well, you get it ;)
So I went into American Hippo by @gaileyfrey thinking it would be hilarious (idk why..the title?), and it was actually an action packed, very bloody, heist with some awesome diversity in an LGBT+ accepting historical fantasy world. Even the villains were respectful, and never slipped up using they/them pronouns.
Anyway, above is Winslow Houndstooth, pansexual Korean/British man who wants to be a hippo rancher, and his love interest; Hero Shackleby, a poc non-binary retired master poisoner and demolitions master.
Omg this is amazing 💛❤🧡💜💙😭🙌

Hero Shackleby from River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey is non-binary
Hero uses they/them pronouns and has no gender.
25 Days of Booklr Day 8: A book and a food (or in this case a drink) you tried this year!
I read River of Teeth while I was on vacation where I tried a Mai Tai shot for the first time! I also learned how to float alcohol to make it look pretty! (I’m very proud of this fact)
River of Teeth is a fun read about cowboys but if it were hippos instead of horses! Really a great read!
(Also a great drink)
Me: river of teeth was such a great read, I should make some meaningful fanart to express my feelings towards it
Also me:
Houndstooth: let me introduce you to Hero, theyre super smarter than me, they can blow things up real good, theyre more attractive than i am, they can poison you without you knowing it, they almost poisoned me and it was awesome, did i mention how amazing they are wow
About a year ago, I attended a panel on worldbuilding in young adult literature. All of the authors on the panel were young, brilliant, dynamic women. They wore flower crowns and they talked about …
Book Rec
Earlier than my usual Friday Book Recs, but I’m so excited about this one I couldn’t wait.
A month or so ago I preordered Sarah Gailey’s River of Teeth, because I’m a sucker for killer-animal stories and the history behind the book is *fantastic*– did you know the government once wanted to breed hippos in the American South for meat?
So today it showed up on my Kindle, and I started reading.
First few pages, m/m implied sex scene. Me– “That’s… not what I usually see in these books. Huh. Cool.”
A little further in– sexy, fat con artist whose weight is not used as a punch line! “Curiouser and curiouser…” <3
Then we meet Hero, who uses they/them pronouns, and it was at this point I turned into a full-on ball of squee and glitter.
((btw, the “this is diverse and that is Not Cool my poor sensibilities noooo” reviews have already started, so if you give this a read be sure to leave a review on Goodreads/Amazon!))
I’m less than halfway through– we have just been introduced to a deadly Very Pregnant assassin– and I’ve had a huge grin on my face the entire time. 100% recommended.
Thank you! ♡_♡
LGBTQ books read in 2018: River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey
“It’s not a caper, it’s an operation.”
I got to draw and paint a hippo! This is like reason #4,534,252 why working with Tor.com and Irene Gallo is an absolute pleasure.
Check out the story too! Worth Her Weight in Gold by Sarah Gailey.
alternate histories where the Nazis won are OUT, alternate histories where North America is overrun with hippos are IN
I'll try to put (read: reblog, not steal) everything on the series that I can find on tumblr on this blog, and then see if I can create some original content too. If you got any posts or recs from other platforms, message me!
