He looks up then, your prince on one knee, the moss of his hair made grey by the pink glass of sunset. If you donât look too closely at the shopping bags on his wrist and the white block heels in his hand you can almost see an alternate future where he is holding something else, something velvet and small and full of promise for a future you will never have. or: you are cursed, and terribly, horribly in love with haku kusanagi. on ao3 here | masterlist.
thinking once again abt the secret candid warding card...
i. You are cursed, and terribly, horribly in love with Haku Kusanagi.Â
You sit on the smooth Hotarubi floor and watch the deft of Hakuâs fingers fold his laundry. The rain drums itself between the both of you, and you pretend not to notice the way your heart folds itself smaller and smaller every time he looks up, flicking a smile through the threads of your conversation.Â

âThat should be all,â Haku says, surveying the trunk.Â
It is packed full of tightly-taped boxes, brown cardboard tops messily labelled in a chicken-scratch scrawl barely readable by dim streetlight. You squint at the top-most package, and check the last item off your list â red mizuhiki strings, requested by Festival Stall #28 â then click your pen shut.Â
âThat should be all,â you confirm.Â
Haku reaches up to slam the trunk shut.Â

Summary: Itâs Hakuâs birthday. Something few acknowledge and even fewer understand. But you remembered. Beneath the wisteria tree, you give him a small, handcrafted gift: a pair of charm earrings made from red and purple silk, threaded with meaning and hope. In that twilight space between incense smoke and fireflies, you speak truths heâs tried to ignore and in return, he gives you a moment youâll never forget. A gift returned. A bond sealed. A thread tied.
It was already twilight by the time you found him.
The fireflies had begun their nightly dance around the wisteria tree behind Hotarubiâa towering, ancient thing draped in cascading lavender blooms that shimmered in the fading light. Despite the still air, its blossoms swayed gently, as if stirred by something unseen.
He is leaning back lazily against the bark with incense smoke curling around his fingers like a familiar friend.
Haku Kusanagi. Impossible to predict. Even more impossible to forget.
He didnât look up when you approached. He didnât have to.
âYouâre here,â he said, his voice low and velvety. âTook you long enough. Were you debating whether Iâm worth the effort?â
You rolled your eyes, but you couldnât help smiling. âYou noticed?â
âI always notice you.â
Your breath caught, just for a second. But you recovered, stepping closer and kneeling beside him on the cool mossy ground.
âI brought you something,â you said, pulling a small box from your bag. âHappy birthday, Haku.â
He finally turned to look at you. His sharp eyesâgreen with flecks of something old and glowingânarrowed slightly, unreadable.
âNo one usually remembers,â he said after a pause. âOr they pretend not to. It makes the day pass quicker.â
You swallowed. âI didnât want to pretend.â
There was a beat of silence, filled only by the low rustle of leaves above and the faint chime of spirit bells in the distance.
Then he reached out, brushing your fingers lightly as he took the gift. The touch was featherlight but lingered long enough to make your heart trip.
He opened it slowly. Nestled inside were a pair of handcrafted earringsâthin, delicately shaped threads of crimson and violet silk, each bound to a small silver ring and threaded with tiny onyx and amethyst beads.
They werenât identicalâbut they were unmistakably a pair.
Haku held them between his fingers, tilting his head as the light caught the threadwork. His expression, usually unreadable, softened.
ââŚRed and purple,â he murmured. âArenât you bold.â
You smiled nervously. âI remembered what you said before. Red thread for fate⌠and purple for protection. Amethyst wards off bad spirits, right?â
He was quiet. His thumb brushed over one of the earrings, slow and almost reverent.
âThey say the red thread of fate ties people who are destined to meet. It frays, tangles⌠but never breaks,â you said quietly. âAnd purpleâs for nobility, too. For the heart. I guess⌠I just wanted you to wear something that felt like a charm. A wish.â
A breeze passed through, fluttering the wisteria blossoms above.
Haku looked at youânot teasing, not lazy, but still. Present.
ââŚYou gave me a pair.â
âI thought maybe⌠youâd wear one. And Iâd keep the other.â
His eyes flashed with something unreadableâbut it burned, just for a second, like something fragile being stirred awake.
âI see,â he whispered. âThen Iâll wear it on my left. Closer to the heart.â
He let the gift rest in his palm, then gently closed his fingers around it.
âMost people avoid the past. You look it in the eye.â
He tilted his head, golden eyes meeting yours. âThatâs dangerous, you know.â
âOnly if the past still controls you,â you said quietly.
He laughedâsoft, breathy, almost startled. âYouâre not like the others.â
A breeze swept between you then, carrying a strange warmth despite the hour. Above, the long wisteria petals swayed like silken ghosts, as if listening in.
âYou always talk like someone whoâs trying to understand me,â he murmured, his voice low and smooth, half-lidded gaze locked on yours. âWhy?â
You hesitated, heart thudding. But it was his birthday. If not nowâthen when?
âBecause you pretend to be lazy and indifferent, but youâre always the first to notice when someoneâs hurting. Because you look like youâre floating through life, but you're carrying far more than anyone knows. BecauseâŚâ
Your voice softened, almost breaking.
âBecause I think youâre lonely, and you donât want to admit it.â
For a moment, he didnât move. The silence was so deep it nearly hummed. ThenâHaku reached out, more boldly this time, his palm cupping your cheek like heâd done it a thousand times in another life. His thumb brushed just beneath your eye.
âYou really shouldnât say things like that,â he whispered, voice unusually unsteady. âYouâll make me fall for you.â
The words struck like a bell across waterâclear, trembling, impossible to take back.
You didnât look away. âMaybe I want you to.â
His gaze lingeredâwatchful, searching. You could feel your heartbeat in your throat, in your fingertips, everywhere.
Then his hand slowly fell, dragging a whisper of warmth across your skin. He looked away with a soft, resigned exhale, like the moment itself had left him defenseless.
ââŚIâll remember this,â he murmured. âTonight. You. This gift. Even if everything else fades, Iâll remember this.â
The incense by his side burned low, its ember faint, glowing like a dying star.
You thought that would be the end of it.
But then Haku reached back into the gift box youâd given himâthe earrings still resting inside, silk threads trailing like twin fates.
He held one out to you.
âThe right one,â he said casually, but his voice had a lilt to it. âItâll suit you.â
You blinked. âMe?â
He rolled his eyes fondly. âDidnât you say it yourself? A pair. One for you, one for me. Thatâs what makes it a charm.â
You hesitated, then leaned forward.
Haku moved slowlyânot like he was stalling, but like this was some private ritual, older than both of you. His fingers brushed your ear as he hooked the crimson-and-violet earring into place, careful, gentle.
âThere,â he murmured, his voice quieter now. âLeft thread for me. Right thread for you. That way, even if we walk opposite pathsâŚâ
His eyes met yours.
ââŚweâll still be tied together.â
Your breath caught.
The petals of the wisteria tree rustled overhead, the incense thread burned its final curl into the night, and for one fragile moment, you wondered if youâd ever felt more seen.

I would have never followed this project to its logical end if not for these 3 points:
1) The main heroine, who outdoes lots of otome MCs. Iâve never seen such a marvelous combination of beauty, intelligence, decisiveness, and kindness. She always keeps her cool, makes rational decisions and, most importantly, fights for her happiness. Shiki isnât some Holy Mary â she is ready to kill in the name of everything she holds dear. Sheâs neither an ice queen, who never cares about the people around her, nor a damsel in distress, who expects to be rescued by some knight in shining armor.
2) The plot, filled with drama and twists. Based on Japanese folklore and history, the game has many fights, intrigues, betrayals, and deaths. This VN has a very depressive mood. Â There are dark themes, war, murder, betrayal, crimes. For the soul of each characters lies the sin of varying severity.
3) Thanks to Liz, artist, Shiki Ugaya now has her own sprite in the game. Capturing Shikiâs very soul, she created various facial expressions that fully convey Tamayorihimeâs personality.
Major advantages of the PC version over the PSP version:
1) While the PSP version doesnât have the heroineâs â Shikiâs â sprite at all, in the PC version, Shikiâs sprite has its own place on the screen. This became possible thanks to two talented artists: Aanu was responsible for Shikiâs face and gave her 72 different heartfelt expressions; Aigul created Shikiâs poses and different physical states, as well as designed all of her stunning clothes.
2) Aigul created sprites for Shikiâs mother, young Akifusa, young Shiki, young Tomonori, and designed different visual elements for other characters.
3) The PC version has a custom design of all gameplay elements â from the user interface to side frames.
Some bugs:
0) The game is now in open beta testing, but stable performance of all its routes is confirmed. 1) Sometimes the game can just up and freeze on you without a reason, reboot helps. ă˝(ă_ă)ă 2) Opening settings on an animated background is not recommended. 3) Too much skipping can result in a crash. Consider saving data every time you get a choice option. 4) The game can sometimes prevent you from creating a new save slot and only allow saving data in an occupied slot, forcing you to rewrite existing save data. I didnât manage to reproduce the problem, but try to avoid saving in the middle of the action on the main screen and when the âskipâ button is pressed (regardless of the route).
