Ways to Show a Character is Angry but Trying Not to Show It
✮ ⋆ ˚。 Their jaw flexes while their smile stays plastered on.
✮ ⋆ ˚。 Responses get shorter, clipped: "Fine." "Sure." "Whatever."
✮ ⋆ ˚。 They stop blinking as often, eyes fixed a little too long.
✮ ⋆ ˚。 Their body gets still, unnaturally still, like every muscle is on lock.
✮ ⋆ ˚。 They press their tongue to their teeth before answering.
✮ ⋆ ˚。 They set things down a little too hard, the glass, the pen, the keys. Not enough to break, just enough to say something.
✮ ⋆ ˚。 They keep asking, "Why would you say that?" but never raise their voice.
✮ ⋆ ˚。 Their politeness sharpens into something cutting, brittle.
✮ ⋆ ˚。 They laugh, but it's one note too sharp, too short.
✮ ⋆ ˚。 The moment they're alone, they let out a breath like they've been holding back an explosion.

NOTE
The above are concepts classified according to subject and usage. It not only helps writers and thinkers to organize their ideas but leads them from those very ideas to the words that can best express them.
It was, in part, created to turn an idea into a specific word. By linking together the main entries that share similar concepts, the index makes possible creative semantic connections between words in our language, stimulating thought and broadening vocabulary.

vampire: My darling, my eternal flame, my heart's joy taken human form... you simply must drink water your blood tastes like shit.
vampire, biting their partner for the first time in a couple months: ok so we're gonna drink less monster energy in the future, babe. you taste like a scene kid threw a rosary at me
Haaaaahaaa
Honestly, I love the idea of a vampire who only drinks blood taken from blood banks and hospitals, because it so beautifully encompasses someone who's more concerned with the vibes of something than the actual impact of it.
Drinking from someone on the street, barring some other condition they may have, isn't likely to kill them unless you gorge yourself. Taking blood packs? There's always a shortage of blood, and having even less of it runs the very real risk of getting someone killed in a way that is wholly out of your control once you've sipped on that blood. Someone you can't assure the innocence or guilt of, if you're the type of person who cares about that.
Despite that, in popular stuff, I often see discussions of drinking from a blood bank being somehow better or preferable, and yeah. No. The only thing it does is make you feel better while doing more harm, because of that degree of removal. You're effectively drinking blood from someone on the cusp of hypovolemic shock, but since it's not straight from the tap, some people seem to think it's better.
This is a really interesting take that I'd never considered, thank you!/gen

one thing i've always understood as Akira Toriyama's influence on manga, even if just assumption on my part, was how his cartooning came to bear when he started writing pure action manga. when I think of his contemporaries I think of overblown special moves like Saint Seiya or the gory fist clusters of FotNS
to me it seemed what Toriyama brought to the table was the satisfaction of clarity in martial arts
when you read his fight scenes, which may have become notorious when animated for dragging on, there's no question about what's happening in the action
a clear kick to the jaw
a clean line of action on Yajirobe's slice
I first noticed this clarity pretty quickly early on in the General Tao fights during the red ribbon arc, where entire fight scenes playing out with these clear motions on the pages
Even as it got more detailed later on, the clarity stayed
clear hits on clear fight scenes
and dirtier but still completely legible lines of action
And when he started introducing the big over the top special moves we got the same thing quite often in DB: that simple visual clarity amplifying the excitement
i'm not super coherent on it right now, i'm not the biggest shonen action fan all the time and maybe Toriyama didn't introduce the world to visually clear and interesting fights in manga.
but when I see any action manga showing off clean fight choreography or sick ass lazer beams that show off clear shockwaves of destruction, i'll always be thinking of the GOAT
RIP Akira Toriyama

Moral Orel and Working the Camera: How filmakers use camera angles, lighting and staging to control the tone of a scene. So a while back in my Screen Design class our professor went over an important lecture that forever changed my view about film and storytelling. I knew this somehow subconsciously, but it was finally put into simple words. How you set up a shot will automatically give the audience a perception of the mood, and it’s surprisingly formulaic! Even though it’s a formula that you can use to create many beautiful shots. If you’ve already been studying film this comes as no surprise to you, but I know many of my followers and friends who have not had the resources to study film but want to do comics and learn visual storytelling might find this cool. There are great books I would recommend on a later date for those people to read, but today I want to talk about the camera and its use in storytelling. Each of these images has a little blurb about me rambling about the set up of a shot. I love studying stop motion animation. It combines the things I love about live action film with the things I love about animation. In live action film, everything you have to work with is something that already exists in physical space - the lighting is from a real light source, lights, sun, and the physical camera (even though you can and often do many more camera movements during the compilation process.) But in a stop motion cartoon, it is entirely fabricated objects being shot and manipulated to move, just like in animation, where everything in the process is made from scratch. Moral Orel is a show famous for its extreme shift in tone from the end of season 2 onto season 3 - starting off as a lowbrow comedy and shifting into a heavy character driven drama. And you can bet that the camera has a lot to do with that! Looking back on season 1, my film theory professor was right - there are a lot more “flat” shots than in seasons 2 and 3, and the entirety of the Nature episodes were shot as traditionally like a drama as possible. So if you are experimenting with visual storytelling, I have made a quick and handy guide for you to keep in mind! Hopefully my examples work even without the context of the series. Keep in mind everything I am saying here does not apply to all films ever made and you can certainty break rules but experimenting with these techniques can lead to great shot choices.
Another tutorial for you guys!
