Today is the 101st birth anniversary of Gujarat's Shri Jashwant Thaker. Jashwant Thaker (1915-1991) was the doyen of Gujarati theatre. He initiated the NAVI RANGBHOOMI movement in Gujarati and was a founder member of the Gujarat chapter of Indian People Theater Association (IPTA) aka LOK NATYA SANGH. He headed three drama colleges in Gujarat. Under the banner of BHARAT NATYA-PEETH he directed more than 150 feature length plays, wrote 7 books on theatre training, wrote 14 original plays, translated 21 plays from Shakespeare, Ibsen, Lorca, Priestly, Moliere, Pinero, Chekhov, Kalidas, Rabinranath Tagore, Sharadbabu; and edited a journal of theatre arts, NATAK, from 1948-1950. He received several awards in recognition for his contribution to Gujarati theatre – including Sangeet Natak Academy (Delhi) Award, Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak- Ranjitram Gold medal and Lenin Award. He is remembered as the NAT-SMARAT of Gujarati theatre.
