as the stairs creaked slightly when leo padded down them, mia let a small smile dance over her face as she continued to make breakfast for them. and once he came into her view, mia glanced over and hummed when he wrapped his arms around her from behind, leaning her head back slightly as she continued to make bacon in the pan. “good morning, sleepy head,” mia cooed, putting the bacon onto a separate plate before starting to make leo a three egg omelette. “smells good, too, right?” she grinned, adding spinach and provolone cheese into his omelette as it sizzled on the pan. it was mornings like these where she appreciated leo the most. it was also raining outside that morning, so it felt like the perfect lazy day to have with him. “can you set the table, baby? take out whatever you need for your omelette and toast, too,” the girl said, plating their food after grabbing two of the nicer plates from the cabinet. she grabbed her phone and started to play a morning playlist that she had through the speaker in the kitchen, humming slightly as she put their food on the table. 

leo padded around the kitchen, getting himself a glass of water to quench his thirst. “you know what’s missing? coffee”, he mumbled to himself in thought, before venturing to find the stovetop espresso machine and coffee grinds in the pantry. “do you want some too, mia?” he asked as he measured out the coffee into the steel pot. once all measured out and filled with water, he set it on the stove up, next to where mia was cooking up his eggs and kissed the side of her temple. “yes, ma’am”, he responded to her request with a small chuckle. he retrieved the cutlery and napkins to put on the table, as well as the butter and jam for the toast. “have you been up long?” leo asked after setting the table and checking on the espresso, curious to know how she had slept for the rest of the night.

once mackenzie mentioned dinner with her mom, maddox licked his lips and nodded slowly as he thought to himself. “alright, yeah. just let me know what days so i can tell my manager to put it on my calendar,” maddox told her before leaning down to peck her temple. he’d be lying if he said that mack’s family wasn’t intimidating to him. they lived a lavish lifestyle all of their life and it was pretty clear that maddox wasn’t always used to the finer things in life. it was only until about two years ago that he became wealthy from his career. the fact that mackenzie and maddox came from different worlds caused some sort of tension, but he tried to not let it bother him. as he walked into the living room, maddox sat down on the couch and glanced over at mack as she walked in after him. “just your mom, or your dad too? did they both want me to come?” he asked, nervously biting on his bottom lip. 

“i’m thinking we could leave sometime on friday, and then come back to the city sunday or monday depending on your work schedule?” mackenzie suggested, wanting to spend as much time as she could up in the hamptons with her family, but also taking into consideration that maddox might be busy with work. long island in the summer was truly one of her favourite places in the world and she wanted to share that with him. all her best memories were there and she wanted to make new ones with maddox. following him into the living room again, mackenzie sat next to him on the couch, lazily draping her legs over his. “i’m pretty sure everyone’s up there”, she shrugged nonchalantly, knowing that no member of her family would miss a summer on the coast. “even monty and dom come home in the summers”, mackenzie clarified, referring to her two older brothers who were away for most of the year at college on the west coast. she was the third of four children, and the only girl. her younger brother, theo, was still in high school. “my mom is the one who suggested it, but i’m sure they both want you there. are you nervous?” she asked with a slightly teasing tone, as she lightly massaged the nape of his neck.

mia let out a small laugh at leo’s comment, humming slightly as she ran her fingers over his knuckles, leaning into his forehead kiss. she laid her head on his bare chest, hearing his heartbeat right against her ear, which calmed her down. as she rested her eyes, mia felt herself become comfortable as she felt safe in his arms again. what was different about this time was that it didn’t take her an hour to get to this state, but a matter of minutes, and that was progress.

the next morning, mia stirred awake, rubbing the sleep from her eyes as she untangled herself from leo who was still sleeping, since it was his day off. after stretching her body out, the smaller girl climbed out of bed and pushed her hair out of her eyes, padding towards the steps. once she reached the kitchen, she started to make leo a proper breakfast, which she liked to do on his days off. mia just felt like she needed (and wanted) to shower him with the most love that she could, because he meant everything to her. and if that meant a spinach and cheese omelette on his off days, then so be it. 

waking up the next morning, leo reached over to the opposite side of the bed to feel that mia had woken up already. when she first started sleeping over, leo would feel panicked when he would wake up to an empty bed, often thinking something had happened to her. now, he had gotten used to it, especially on his days off, as he was prone to sleeping in as long as possible whenever he had the chance. quite frankly, it wasn’t often so the boy liked to take advantage of it whenever he could. sitting up with a sleepy groan, leo rubbed the sleep from his face as he padded into the master bathroom to wash his face and brush his teeth. once he was finished cleaning up, he made his way downstairs where he could smell the start of breakfast being made. “gooood morning”, he sung with a smile on his face as he wrapped his arms around mia from behind. kissing her cheek, he looked down at the pan in front of her, checking out what she had cooked up this morning. “mmm that looks delicious, baby”.

this type of feeling was new for maddox. in fact, the guy didn’t feel too much at all most times. he kind of tried to be as stone cold as possible, only because of his past. every emotionless man comes with an emotional back story, right? living in the poorest part of his state wasn’t even the half of it. his dad left him and his mom when maddox was only four years old, never returning to see them again. this led to his mom starting her addiction to drugs, always seeing random men in and out of his house. it wasn’t until later in life when he eventually realized what was going on. it was then that he lost all trust in his mom, but he eventually built it back up, giving her what she needed to get better and to live a happy life. but the boy had seen some pretty extreme things in his younger years, which made him have a tough exterior. having emotions did nothing for you in this world and that was his mindset. but when it came to mackenzie, the softer feelings he had were new and they made him feel light and like a better person. it was indescribable at times. “i know, baby. we’re going to be everyone’s couple goals for the next six months,” maddox smirked, rubbing her hands up and down her arms as he watched her eyes. 

mackenzie knew that maddox had a less than ideal childhood growing up so she could understand if some of that trauma had shaped the man that stood before her. she never pressed him on it so she didn’t know all the details but once and a while he opened up on his own and the girl appreciated those moments more than he would ever know. when it came to maddox, unlike most of her ex-boyfriends, she wanted to know everything about him  -  both the good and te bad. they came from completely different worlds really. her family was basically new york royalty which granted her all the privilege in the world. prestigious private schools, summers in the hamptons, a range rover for her sixteenth birthday  -  the whole sh-bang. so her worldview was much more naive and rose-coloured compared to his. “i can’t wait”, she grinned, genuinely excited for the world to see them on stage together. “also, i forgot to mention, my mom wants to have you over for dinner next week”, she aloud not only to inform him but also to remind herself. “they’re up at the summer home so i was thinking we could maybe spend the weekend there?”

rory’s love life was pretty complicated, to say the least. it had been a constant battle with feelings and confusing relationships and it was, honestly, tiring. so, when nico pushed away from the girl when she hinted that she may have feelings for him, rory wasn’t surprised. and she kind of gave up from that point on. so, when the boy had asked her to go to dinner with him, she was a little confused. after consulting with her twin sister about what to do, they came to the consensus that it wouldn’t hurt to just go to dinner with him. despite the whirlwind of emotions rory had gone through with him. once she got the text from nico, saying he was outside, the blonde put her hairbrush down and slipped her shoes on her feet and walked out the front door, revealing herself to the boy who was sitting in his idling jeep. she didn’t want to seem too dressed up, so she had just thrown on a crop top and denim shorts, which was her go-to look. pulling on the door handle, rory hopped into the jeep and grinned over at nico. “heyo,” she started happily, “i’m glad you asked me to go out because i am so hungry,” the girl giggled, running a hand through her hair. 

it wasn’t that nico was unattracted to rory, or that there was anything wrong with her per say. he just didn’t feel like now was the right time for a serious relationship. he was still getting used to living with his older brother, maverick, and after being away from the west coast for the majority of the last four years, he felt like he had reacclimated. a relationship definitely wasn’t a priority to him at the moment but rory was a really sweet girl that he didn’t want to lose, so he just wanted to take things slow and see where things went. nico wasn’t confident that he would be able to invest the amount of time and energy a healthy relationship required, but he was willing to test out the waters. when he noticed rory appear at her door, the blonde boy grinned and waved from behind the steering wheel. “hey rory! i’m glad you said yes so i wouldn’t have to go alone”, he chuckled and waited for her to pulled on her seat belt before pulling out of the driveway.

letting his toned arms pull away from the smaller girl, maverick stepped behind her once she had made her way into the foyer, closing the door behind her and locking it up. nico was out, and he didn’t need anyone coming in unannounced. “you know, the usual,” maverick shrugged as the two made their way deeper into the beach themed house, finally plopping down on the couch once they reached the living room. his legs stretched out onto the coffee table just as violetta took a seat beside him, his right arm casually laying on the back of the couch. “i went for a jog this morning, nico made me this really good smoothie, and, uh, went to a meeting. yeah, i think that’s it,” the blonde chuckled before looking over at his best friend beside him. he didn’t want it to seem like violetta was second best, because she wasn’t. there were just obstacles in the way of maverick truly seeing who was really there for him and who wasn’t. and violetta definitely was one of those people who loved maverick, no matter the situation.

after slipping her sneakers off at the entranceway, violetta followed maverick into the living room and sat down next to him lazily slumping into the cushions. she could act like a complete slob in front of him and feel no judgment coming her way which is why she could be completely and unapologetically herself around him which was refreshing. she crossed her arms across her chest and looked at her best friend as he spoke. “that actually sounds... productive”, she teased, a smile dancing on her rosy lips. “no drinking of feelings or anything along those lines?” she asked, just to clarify. if had managed to have a decently productive and normal day today, she would be proud of him. heartbreak was never an easy process, violetta knew that from experience, but any day spent without sulking was usually a positive sign.

after a few more moments of breathing and focusing on her breath, mia laid her head back down on the cold pillow after shifting away from leo, nodding her head slightly. “i know,” she breathed out, her eyes fixated on the picture of her and leo that was frame on his nightstand. it made her smile slightly, moving her eyes back towards leo through the darkness. “thank you,” mia choked out before reaching over to hold his hand, her dainty fingers running along the outlines of the tattoos on his arm. focusing on something other than her nightmares was good for her, only because she wanted to go back to sleep eventually. but she knew her body didn’t let her do that right after waking up in a panic attack, just because that’s the way she functioned. “do you know that i love you?” mia asked softly, her eyes still watching her own fingers move around his skin, glancing over at her boyfriend.

holding her for just a moment, leo savoured the feeling of mia in his arms, tightly around her petite figure. as she pulled away, he let go and watched as she laid back down, seeming to have relaxed a little bit more. he stayed sitting up, his hand resting against her leg as he just observed mia for a moment. “that’s a cute one isn’t it?”, he chuckled softly when he noticed her looking at the picture he had framed soon after she had moved in. he wanted his place to feel like home to her and thought that a picture of the two of them might help. when mia’s hand found his, he laid back down next to her, laying on his side to face her. he knew that he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep until she had, so he rubbed his hands over her arms softly. the boy couldn’t help but smile at her words and leaned in to kiss her forehead once. “do you know that i love you more?” he whispered, chuckling softly.

maddox chuckled at what mackenzie said, nodding his head as he wrapped his arm around her back, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead. he knew she wasn’t joking, either, which made it the best part. “of course, baby girl. the world is your oyster,” the boy grinned before lacing their fingers together, looking down at her eyes as she started to speak again. her sweet words made maddox’s insides all soft and mushy, which he didn’t want to admit that it was a good feeling. but it did make him feel special when mackenzie expressed how much she valued their relationship. it helped maddox along to know that it wasn’t one sided and he wasn’t going to be screwed over in the end. “it is really special, mack. i’m glad we get to experience this together,” the boy said, tucking her hair behind her ear to reveal all of her facial features. leaning down to her height, maddox pressed a gentle and soft kiss to her lush lips, letting it linger for a while before slowly pulling away to meet her eyes again. “i love you,” he breathed out in his deep voice. 

the butterflies started up in her stomach when the words “baby girl” escaped maddox’s lips. even after all these months, mackenzie still felt like a school girl with a raging crush when she was around her boyfriend. he brought up so many emotions in her, both good and bad, which was probably why they were either zero or a hundred with no in-between. she toyed with his fingers that were intertwined with hers and nodded in agreement. some couples might not appreciate sharing the spotlight with their significant other, but mackenzie recognized that this opportunity was once in a lifetime. she would only make her victoria’s secret debut once, and doing it with maddox by her side was a dream come true for her. she kissed him back, pressing her lips into his hard with intention. “i love you too, mads. and i can’t wait to show the world how in love we are”, she said quietly, only to him, as she leaned her forehead against his.

as maddox heard mackenzie’s order, he nodded his head once and punched it into his phone on the app, writing in ‘dressing on the side’ for her. once he had added a tip and put their delivery address into the designated spaces, the boy paid with his credit card that was already filed onto his phone. he placed his phone on the counter, grabbing his glass of water before glancing over at mackenzie as he sipped from it. he always appreciated the amount of work that his girlfriend had to do to keep her status up as a model. a modeling career was one of those things that you didn’t get unless you did it or knew someone that did it. most people had this conception that models don’t have a lot of work to do, and all they do is look pretty. this was not the case with mack – and maddox could attest to that. every morning, the girl came with maddox to the gym and did far more workouts than he did. and she ate a hell of a lot better than he did, too. and he gave her credit for that. “i’m sure you’re excited to eat all the junk food you cut out soon, yeah?” the boy asked her with a smirk, walking over to her and wrapping his arms around her smaller frame. 

since her mother was a model, it was inevitable that she was at least dip her toe into the modeling world as she was growing up. luckily for mackenzie, she had inherited her mother’s striking facial features and slim body type that was ideal for models. but it didn’t at all come naturally to her. she still had to workout, eat well, and practice  -  all just to prove that she was a perfectly capable model in her own right. the petite girl nodded excitedly, this was the thinnest she had been in a long while and despite the industry praising her for it, she didn’t feel like herself when her bones jutted out the way that they currently did. “right after the taping, we’re going to order all of my favourite foods and we’re gonna binge it all”, she grinned, her mouth watering just thinking about the plan as she leaned into her boyfriend. “i am really happy that we get to do the show together, you know? i think it’s really special”, mackenzie remarked, looking up at her boyfriend sweetly.

as mia was reassured, just like she knew she would be, her head lifted from leo’s shoulder to look at his eyes through the darkness that filled the room. it was leo that taught her how to calm down and relax her breathing, only because the heavy breathing and panting could disrupt her healing process from her punctured lung. and she didn’t want to be set back. as she felt the warm pair of lips press against her temple, mia took another small breath, running her tongue along her lower lip before nodding slightly as his suggestion. talking about these nightmares was so draining, but she knew it was for the best. this way, the thoughts wouldn’t be ruminating throughout the night and into the next day. “h-he was there. and… it just felt like i was running forever and he was after me and i couldn’t escape him,” mia poured out, her eyes welling up with tears again. mia knew that leo recognized that ‘he’ meant her ex-boyfriend. so, she felt that she didn’t need to reiterate that. and she didn’t want to.

all leo could really do was nod silently and continue to running his hand over her golden strands. it was really difficult to see mia like this and how her ex-boyfriend continued to affect her well-being even though he was nowhere near her now. of course, leo wished he could just wipe all memories of him away but that wasn’t their reality and they would have to navigate their relationship with her ex haunting her the entire time. “he’s not here, baby. it’s just you and me”, he cooed, reminding her that no one else was in the bed, let alone the entire house, other than them. “there’s no way that he would find you here and i’ll always keep you safe”. leo kissed the top of her head again, frustrated that no matter what he did, he would never make her feel completely safe as long as these night terrors continued. there was nothing he wanted to give her more than the protection and safety she deserve, but it was just something that would reveal itself over time.

as each minute passed, time felt like it was slowing down more and more until it nearly hit a stop. or at least that’s how it felt to ryleigh anderson as she waited for warner to come out of surgery. she was so worried sick that she hadn’t eaten all day and the food that her parents had brought her was starting to get cold on her bedside table. her parents were here  -  her mother sitting at the edge of her bed and her father in a chair nearby  -  to distract her for the day, but as grateful as she was for them, it didn’t seem to help. her parents had really over-compensated today by bringing a fresh bouquet of flowers, a new board game, lunch, and some of her favourite snacks to replenish her snack drawer. sighing into her mother’s shoulder, ryleigh blankly stared across the room at the empty bed, counting down the minutes until he would return. “ry, sweetie, you should try to eat something...” her mother insisted softly as she soothed her daughter by running her fingers through her blonde strands. ryleigh simply shook her head, reminding her mother that she felt too uneasy to keep anything down. as soon as the door swung open, the blonde jolted up, anxious to know if her friend had returned or if it just another nurse making her rounds.

it had been a few days since nico had last seen rory since work usually kept him pretty busy during the week to say the least. he knew going into the job that the tech industry was pretty cut-throat but no amount of mental preparation could prepare him for the amount of hours and energy that he would put into his work. though it exhausted him 90% of the time, he also embraced it. problem-solving was his forte and he was never one to step down from a challenge. today he had actually managed to leave the office at a decent time and called up rory, asking if she wanted to go to dinner with him. it wasn’t like a date or anything  -  or maybe it was. the two of them were friends but nico could never quite figure out his feelings for her. as he parked his car in front of her home, he quickly sent her a text to let her know that he was outside.

it had been endless nights of maverick drinking himself into a slump, waking up in the mornings after with a pounding headache and a weak stomach. a routine made for only the weakest of men. which, right now, was maverick. if you were ever wondering what heartbreak did to men who actually have feelings, this was it. of course, he couldn’t do anything too stupid because he was living with his brother, but he was still waking up and doing it all over again, which was still bad. but, luckily, violetta was going to put that to and end very quickly. he had been promised by his best friend that they were going to have a night together, like old times, and order a bunch of pizza and watch movies that were going to make him laugh, not cry. it was hard for maverick because he usually didn’t put his heart on his sleeve like he did for bea. so, when he was kicked to the curb for someone else, it hurt like hell. and he knew that violetta would understand that. as he heard the door bell ring from the front of his home, the blonde boy, wearing nothing but grey sweatpants, jogged to the door and opened it quickly, revealing himself to the smaller girl in front of him. “hey, vio!” he exclaimed, embracing her in a tight hug. “i am so happy to see you.”

in all honesty, violetta was still unsure about where her feelings for maverick stood after everything that had happened. for years, he was her best friend and someone she could turn to no matter what the circumstances. obviously, there times where she questioned if they’d ever be anything more but she had kept herself so occupied that nothing ever came to fruition. that is, until a few weeks ago. she thought it was better to keep sex and friendships separate considering the girl’s track record of falling fast and falling hard when it came to relationships. but now she wasn’t so sure. it was hard for violetta to come to terms with the fact that maverick had assured her that he wasn’t just hooking up with her for the sake of hooking up, and then had gone and spilled his heart to bea. now that he had his turn of having his heart rejected, it was violetta’s job to patch him back up because after all, that’s what best friends do for each other. “hi mavy, i’m glad to hear that  -  that’s exactly what i came here to do”, she embraced him back before stepping into the beach house. “how’s your day been?”

maria shook her head back at him, “i can’t believe you’re giving me shit for not liking the worst type of alcohol!”, she teased back. “it tastes like dirty water and it doesn’t even do the job! it’s o for two in my eyes”, she laughed as she explained her reasoning. she shoved him playfully when he called her mom, “i’m just saying! you need to stay on top of school”, she said, “your mom told me to make sure you do, too”, maria laughed. “and there’s no way i can disappoint that woman”, she said, even though she knew mason’s parents were fond of her. “it was one of my engineering ones. a operating systems one”, she explained. she laughed, “i’m not feeling picky, honestly. i could go for pizza or chinese food or anything else”, she grabbed her phone to order.

before he could defend his beloved alcohol, mason was shoved playfully by the girl and he couldn’t help but laugh. maria was always playing mom to him and his mother also kept in close touch with her, knowing fully well that mason was more likely to listen to maria that his mother. especially when it came to nags like this one. “i know that message came straight from her so you can consider it disregarded”, he joked. he obviously wanted to keep his mother happy, she was a single-mother after all, but while he was away from home and with the guys, thing became irresponsible at times. but maria had a way of putting him back in his lane and keeping his head screwed on straight even it fell crooked at times. “yuck”, he made a face. “sounds hard”. mason realized pretty quickly that her degree was on topics far beyond his range and never fully understood any concept when she began talking about them. “i could muck some chinese food”, the boy agreed, nodding his head. “fried noodles? mmmm!”

noah laughed at what he said, “well, glad you’re here to prove them wrong, i guess”, he chuckled, following her gaze up to the ceiling. it was very weird for him to be here, especially since he and rose were hardly the same anymore. he turned to face her when she asked him a question, nodding slowly. “school is good!”, he said with a smile. “yeah, i’m starting it in late summer”, he explained, “it’s a masters in public science”, he said, a bit surprised that rose knew that and that she was asking him about it with interest, or so it seemed. he found himself only interacting with her when she was drunk, and he knew that she would hardly remember things from the night before, but he wasn’t going to leave her alone. “how about you? how’s school going?”, he asked with a raise of his eyebrow. noah admittedly didn’t know much about her academic life.

despite laying down, rose tilted her head so she could still admire noah’s face from her angle. she had always thought that he was good looking, though not technically her “ type “. she had always had a soft spot for boys with curls but she had a tendency to go for boys that ran in the same social circles as her: the typical frat boy or varsity athlete. “that sounds impressive”, she cooed, clearly in awe of his academic vigor. “so, like, what do you do with a masters in public science?” she asked, not really even sure she knew what that was. when the topic switched over to her education, rose shrugged nonchalantly, knowing that her repertoire was much less exciting. “i graduated”, she chuckled softly, feeling stupid for being proud of such a minimal achievement. “barely, but i did it”. she would never admit it but rose was scared of what was next. she had no career prospects, no plans for furthering her education... so, she kept her social calendar full and ignored the impending reality.

mia put her hand on her chest as she tried to catch her breath, feeling herself calm down slightly as she felt the warmth of leo’s hand on the small of her back before she leaned into him. her breath hitched a few more times before she started to count her breathing in two’s, looking up at leo with her watery eyes, her breath shaky as she came back to an awakened state. “i’m s-sorry, i didn’t mean to wake you,” mia apologized, putting her hands in front of her, resting them both on her thighs as she stared off into the distance. the girl knew never to apologize to leo for things like this because he always said that’s what he was there for, but she couldn’t help it. mia knew that he was working long hours and she hated to disrupt his sleep schedule. on the other hand, she was extremely thankful he knew how to deal with panic attacks and nightmares because they would be endless without him. after taking a deep breath, mia leaned her head on her boyfriend’s bare shoulder, a few tears falling from her eyes. she didn’t want to be stuck in this forever, but it felt like she was going to be. 

sitting up, leo rubbed his face, wiping the sleep from his eyes and coming to the situation at hand. his hand comforted mia as it moved in sync with the breathing exercises that helped with calming her nerves and panic attacks in general. he had taught her those techniques while she was still a patient at the hospital. he ducked his head to meet her eyes and continued rubbing her back soothingly. “no need to apologize love, you were just having a nightmare”, he sympathized as he kissed the side of her temple and pulled her close, into his shoulder. “do you want to talk about it?” he asked her hesitantly, his voice sounding small as he felt her start to cry on his shoulder. tears weren’t an unusual happening these days but it was still hard for him to see mia so unhappy at times. “maybe it would help if we talked about what you were dreaming about...”
