I came across this article and thought it was very interesting. I never knew physics played a big role in something so simple such as the fountain pen. It also surprised me that surface tension is very involved.
This week we learned about IMA (ideal mechanical advantage) and AMA (actual mechanical advantage). AMA is the ratio of output force to input force of a machine. AMA = outputF/inputF. AMA tells you how many times the machine multiplies the force you put in. IMA is the ratio of output distance of a machine. IMA- de/dr. IMA tells you how far a distance you need to exert a force.
In class, we learned about actual mechanical advantage. We learned it was a ratio of a output force to the input force of a machine. AMA= output F/ input F. Mechanical Advantage tells you how many times the machine multiplies force you put into a machine. IMA= D in/ D out. Efficiency is equal to the W out/ W in. (AMA/IMA) The ideal mechanical advantage is the ratio of output distance to input distance of a machine. Three types of simple machines include the lever, pulley, and incline.

This week we began talking about machines. A machine is a device for increasing a force or changing the direction of a force. Fd(input)=Fd(output). This equation shows the that the work input is the same as the work output. With this you can also calculate the efficiency of a machine. Wout/Win *100. There are 3 common simple machines, the lever, the pulley, and the incline. No machine has 100% efficiency.
This week we conducted an experiment that involved measuring the efficiency of several pulley systems. In this experiment we looked at the relationships of AMA (actual mechanical advantage), IMA (ideal mechanical advantage), and the efficiency of the different pulley systems.
This week we also talked about Kinetic Energy. Kinetic energy is calculated with the equation KE= 1/2mv^2. The SI unit is the Joule. We also talked about the Work Energy Theorem. This theorem combines the KE and PE equations. It shows that whenever work is done, energy changes. The equation is Fd=1/2mv^2
This week we learned about Potential energy. Potential energy is the energy of position and it refers to the relative position of two objects. When an object has potential energy, it has this energy because it is in a stored state and has the potential of doing work. Gravitational potential energy is the work that was required to elevate the object against gravity. The equation used to calculate gravitational potential energy is PEg=W=Fd or PEg=mgh. Gravitational potential energy depends on two factors. These two factors are the weight of the object and the height of its elevated position.
This week we learned about the conservation of energy. Energy changes from one form to another which causes no loss of energy. We can see this with the equation E=PE+KE, this also remains constant throughout various points in the system. As shown in the video, the bowling ball does not hit the mans face because of the conservation of energy. It had the same potential energy started with and kinetic energy.The Energy remained constant throughout various points in the bowling balls motion and there was a conservation of energy.
Today in class we began learning about the conservation of energy. I learned that when energy changes from one form to another there is no net loss or gain of energy. I also learned that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed into different forms. This was familiar to me...
Your right. We did do something like this in chemistry.
Trampolines
I think trampolines are a pretty good example of kinetic and potential energy in action. When you jump up, you have kinetic energy, from your motion. But when you fall back down to the trampoline and hit its surface, you cause it to dent down. While you’re in this sort of ditch in the trampoline, you have a great deal of potential energy. When the trampoline eventually springs back to a flat state, you’re propelled into the air, and all that potential energy becomes kinetic.
Nice, I never thought of trampolines as an example of potential and kinetic energy.
This week we also talked about mechanical energy. There are many types of energy such as potential energy and kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion and can be calculated with the equation KE= 1/2 mv^2. Potential energy is the energy stored in an object. This video explains the difference between the two.
This week we talked about work. Work is the product of an object and the distance it is moved, therefore if work occurs, the object must move (W=FD). If there is no movement there is no work. There are also different types of work. One type is work done against another force, and the other is work done to change the velocity of something.
Today we conducted an experiment to measure power production of several students. By running up stairs which was a certain distance, we could use the weight of the student, the time, and the distance of the stairs to calculate horsepower and watts
This week we talked about the 2 types of collision, elastic and inelastic. Elastic collisions occurs when 2 objects collide and bounce apart with no energy loss. KEi=KEf. Inelastic collisions occur when 2 objects collide and some mechanical energy is transformed into heat. KEi > KEf
Today at West Point, we saw a lot of canons which reminded me about the conservation of momentum. If a canon ball is shot out of the canon itself, the canon ball has a certain mass and a velocity. This results in the ball having momentum. In order to conserve the momentum, the canon must recoil with an equal momentum. The Mass of the two objects are different, and the velocities are different, however, the momentum will be conserved.
Today I learned about impulse. Impulse is equal to the change in momentum. Impulse plays a role in our everyday lives as well as in sports, such as soccer shown here in this video.

This video shows a real life example of the conservation of momentum. One of the examples has to do with the game of pool. When one ball hits the other ball, the other ball will move at a certain velocity in that direction, the mass will remain the same, and the momentum will be conserved.
