There is something strange about how people (in certain circles) talk after the wave of "mental health activism" of the 2010s. And it is sometimes like "neurotypical" or "mentally healthy" people are just supposed to have infinite forbearance for mentally ill people. Like take depression for example. It's like you're supposed to just tank a lot of negativity and not say anything. And it seems like when you're depressed you actually do get really insecure and really annoying. Then you get self-aware about this. Then fueling your self-hatred is the sense that you are being clingy and annoying. Which you are. Then you start complaining about how clingy and annoying you are and your "rock" is just supposed to tank that too and not say anything and assure you that everything is fine. They're creating a wonderful world of falsehood for you which is supposed to make you feel better but which is of course so flimsy that you couldn't possibly feel anything other than despair in it. But if the mask slips then they're toxic, they're the problem, they're not supporting you enough. It just seems a rather strange world that we're building for ourselves. It also seems like a completely unreasonable set of expectations to put on another person. And again I wonder if we're destroying ourselves by getting lost further and further in a defective network of concepts.

It might be a little silly, but Neopets Magazine is an important slice of a different part of gaming culture.

During its four-year run, Neopets Magazine covered the latest news and strategies for the influential 2000s-era web game. It also had a lot of articles about Neopets merchandise and trading cards. In fact, it’s mostly ads for Neopets products. Or long articles about Neopets lore. At best, it is mostly an off-topic magazine. So why did we focus on this magazine of our archive? Simple: it’s about the game’s audience. Neopets was, arguably, the defining girl game of the 2000s. An entire microgeneration of girls got their start in the world of digital entertainment by raising virtual pets and playing Flash games to get Neopoints. [...] Notably, many of the magazine’s articles are about creativity and customization. There’s shades in here of the gameplay styles that have become more popular in the last decade with the rise of cozy games and farming sims. My favorite quirk of Neopets Magazine is in the audience survey that came with some issues. In one survey question, they asked whether readers bought this magazine at a clothing store! That would have reached a completely different audience than we usually associate with game magazines. Can you imagine PC Gamer being sold at a Charlotte Russe? Let me settle the 'is it fetishism and is it bad?' debate once and for all:

Being attracted to any kind of body is normal. Fat bodies. Trans bodies. Disabled bodies. All normal. Being extra attracted to a specific kind of body is normal too. Totally normal to have a type.

Not unlearning the societal stigma attached to those kinds of bodies, the people who inhabit those bodies, and the people who fuck them, to the point where you do any of the following:

Only want to date/fuck the person in secret.

Reduce the person to the feature that you desire and ignore the rest of who they are as a person.

Expect the person to be a walking porn fantasy instead of a real person with their own sexual preferences and boundaries.

Would no longer love the person if the stigmatized aspect of their body changed.

Consider yourself superior to the person, think the person should be 'grateful' that you love their body, etc.

See the person as a temporary adventure while planning to eventually settle down with someone whose body isn't stigmatized.

Is bad and harmful and you shouldn't be dating anyone until you've worked on your shit, because this makes you a very terrible partner. This doesn't mean you are a bad person with bad-fetishist-desires who can only desire people badly, it means you need to unlearn societal stigma so you can be a better partner to the people you desire.
