Act 1: Scene 12

The Tao of Dalton

In the final scene of Act 1, back at the Double Deuce, Dalton and Tilghman start the painful process of tearing it down to rebuild it.  From the start, Dalton sets out to assert his dominance by firing Morgan.  He doesn’t take it well, even though the severance packages includes advice about a future career in hair care.

From there, Dalton addresses the troops. They are a skeptical bunch.  So it’s that time in the movie where an inspirational speech is required. The Tao of Dalton, as it has become known, is unveiled.  These tenants have actual real-world project management relevance.

Never underestimate your opponent.  Respect that the workload is sizable, and plan for eventualities.

Take it outside.  When problems come up, don’t let it interfere with the work being done by the rest of the team.  Isolate it from the project as fast as possible.

Be nice.  Projects are created and used by people. You should be nice to people. Until it’s time to not be nice.

Act 1: Scene 11

It Ain’t the Money

Dalton sets out to find a place to lay his head, and he ends up at Emmet’s horse farm.  No phone, no television, no conditioned air, but a great view across the river to the mansion of the town baddie.

Emmet is played by Hollywood character actor Sunshine Parker.  Parker had roles in movies like Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and Tremors, opposite of Kevin Bacon. So that’s how you can get Swayze to Bacon in one step.  Parker’s charm made him a natural for the role, delivering such dialogue gems like “Calling me ‘sir’ is like putting an elevator in an outhouse.”  It was a role he was meant to play.

Equally well suited was Ben Gazzara in the role of Brad Wesley, the town mob boss and extortionist.  Gazzara plays the villain with all the bravado you would want in any western.  Cocky and sure, he oozed evil but charming in every scene.  Sure, The Big Lebowski might be memorable for younger audiences, he sharpened his sword in Road House.

This scene sets up the contrast between the rich and poor, evil and pure, separated only by the winding river which will play a significant part of the overall story.  The stark contrast of humble to opulent was entirely intentional, as both Emmet’s house and the barn were constructed entirely for this film.  By director Rowdy Herrington’s insistence, the loft of the barn has direct line of sight to Wesley’s estate.

This scene also includes one of the more pointed exchanges of dialogue. It’s hard to call it my favorite from the movie, but it’s certainly near the top.   When Emmet asks for $100 a month for rent, he embarrassingly introduces the request as necessary to keep him on the good side of the local Presbyterians.  When Dalton agrees if it will keep Emmet in the church’s good graces, Emmet responds “Ain’t it peculiar how money seems to do that very thing.”  So wise, and a kick-ass beard to boot.

Act 1 : Scenes 9 & 10

Attention to Detail

After getting acquainted with the Double Deuce, Dalton starts to shop around town to amass the tools for his trade. He needs a beater car with lots of spare parts, and a place to lay his head at night.

The car dealership scene is the first that Rowdy Herrington, the director, shot for the movie.  When you pause the film and look, you gain an appreciation for the care that Herrington took when making this film. In the manager’s office, a sign saying Jasper Improvement Society Member hangs.  This is a call forward to how the villain in the film is extorting all of the businesses in town. A first time viewer won’t get the significance of the sign, but the director had it made and hung there anyway. That shows the level of dedication he had to this film and the rich backstory of Jasper.

After getting his beater car, equipped with headlight covers, Dalton heads to the wrecker yard to gain extra tires. He is obviously practiced at cleaning up a bar, and knows what he is in for. The wreck yard owner doesn’t understand it, but gives a wave of luck anyway.

Act 1: Scene 8

Morgan looks for shit.

After the fight settles down and the bar clears out, Dalton emerges from the office and cuts his way through the aftermath, heading to the door.  Along the way, Morgan confronts him on his reputation.  The claim is that Dalton suffers from elephantiasis, to which Dalton glibly offers that opinions differ.  For some reason, Morgan is now offended.

Once Dalton leaves, Morgan approaches the blind guitarist Cody to find out the real dirt on Dalton.  “You fuck with him and he’ll seal your fate.”  Pretty cut and dry, but Morgan isn’t buying it.

“Yeah, well so far he hasn’t shown me shit,” Morgan responds.

Big hair band girls in the 80′s were a staple, and this wide angle cast shot shows it off to perfection.  Sports bras, and cow prints were not a national crazy, mostly popular in the mid-West.  Once again, the wardrobe team on Road House knew the era well and did a great job capturing the mood.
