I find it so interesting when people complain about heated rivalry just being gay porn catering to straight women, especially as a lesbian

Yeah there was a lot of sex but did that automatically make it porn?? They compare it to brokeback mountain, even though that movie was also mocked and called pornographic in the years following its release

Now hr and brokeback mountain are telling entirely different stories with different levels of depth, but at its core, heated rivalry is a gay love story as well

So seeing people completely write heated rivalry off as disgusting fujo bait is weird when I’ve seen nothing but love and care from the people involved in making it

It feels very puritanical while hiding behind the guise of progressiveness, how much sex is allowed in a queer story before it becomes degenerate pandering to straight women?

Especially when the criticism is given as “this is what makes it as disgusting slop” instead of “it would have been better if it had more/less of this”

Like when people criticize the lack of racial diversity and then jump to saying hr is perpetuating white supremacy (yes I’ve seen this), even when the premise of the story is a majority white sport

It also frustrates me because the conversation ends there. It’s just like with “dark” BL stories: all of these things are trash and you are disgusted and perverted for liking them

I can appreciate when someone goes “HR didn’t work for me, I appreciate stories that better showcase POC like Saving Face or Moonlight” or “I don’t feel connected to the sexual aspect of the queer experience that is a huge focus of HR, so these are stories I’d recommend personally instead”

But I rarely see that, it’s just a lot of bashing that feels pretty misogynistic (women liking queer stories are perverts) and homophobic (gay sex is inherently pornographic and that’s bad) despite being brushed with a “liberal” coat

Would love to hear other peoples sides of this too!!
