I do like the idea of Robert having a super power but it's completely useless to himself. Like give him the power to enhance other hero's powers. It can be something of an imperceivable aura that he has, or like a status effect from being around him for a prolonged period of time.
Like oh you're a hero and previously had the strength of ten men? When you're within close proximity to Mecha Man it's now twenty. Heroes that team up with him on the field can fly higher, faster, hit harder, endure more, etc etc etc.
It makes every hero in LA want to be Mecha Man's partner. He's also been barraged endlessly over the years to form his own hero team like his father, but Robert doesn't want a partner or team who just want to use him. The only thing he wants to do, is to do his job well. And if he doesn't need anyone else to accomplish that goal, then he will happily do it alone.
(Rumors swirl online that there must be some sort of drastic, secret downside to MM's power, because why else would he refuse to make his own team? The leading theory is that his power-boosting ability gives people cancer.)
Anyway cue the Z-Team working/training/developing under Robert as their new dispatcher and being confused as fuck as to why they're all suddenly super good at their jobs now.
I also like the idea of Robert being extra jaded in this AU because he already thinks very little of himself in canon, imagine the long-term mental damage caused by knowing you're only desired or respected by your peers because they want to use you.
