Arcane/Stardew Valley Au

I'm currently working on a Stardew Valley AU for a JayVik fic, but I've come to a problem; I can't decide wether to replace all the residents of Pelican town, making it feel much smaller, or to include them and make the town a little bigger, but also make it feel like I'm kind of ignoring the Stardew Valley characters, especially because they won't be plot relevant. What do you all think?

They start with a large, thick beach towel designed to be sat on rather than to dry one's self. It's a little thicker, but with shorter fibers to release sand easily, and there's a whole in the center for the umbrella.

Viktor spreads the towel flat with his weaker leg and pitches the umbrella in its place, officially marking the space as theirs for a time. Once he's confident it won't fall, he sets the towels down beside it.

Jayce helps him gradually sit down.

The sky is vividly blue, with a healthy smattering of cirrus clouds. The waves are not so aggressive near the beach itself, breaking easily upon the little dunes, but look drastic enough further out for those who come to surf to enjoy themselves. The sand itself is powdery and white, soft under their feet and warmed by the sun.

The sand manages to stay so cool because of how fine it is, and its coloration. Chunkier black sand would be scorching by this time of day, and at this time of year.

It sticks to their shoes a little as they walk, but thankfully is packed enough to not allow Viktor's crutch to sink into it. It would have put a wrench into their little trip, would it not?

"Hm..." Viktor settles onto the towel, watching Jayce place the cooler on one end of the towel and their bag on the other. "It is nice outside, but I suppose I just don't understand what one would do at the beach, if they are not a child?" He turns to look at the little girl, now busy building a sand castle near the water. "Unless you brought me here to play with shovels and buckets?"

Viktor places his hat down beside him and runs his fingers through his hair, catching on tangles. His hair is just slightly curly. "You must be living under a rock when I'm not with you,"

Hm...Maybe Viktor isn't a bad choice of an informant either.

For now, he's called V.

It's apparently shortened from 'visitor', but something about it resonates with him, and feels kind of soothing.

V has very few memories, and a splitting headache, concentrated between his eyes but spread through the rest of his skull. He mostly remembers someone in stiff grey and blue clothes telling him the basics of himself, and that he gave his name for his cause, so he could join another alchemist abroad-The very alchemist who will be keeping V's name until he's earned it.

Viktor looks up from the book, his eyes sunken and bloodshot, his lips blue. There’s a faint smear of blood across his upper lip, stark against his papery skin. He's so thin now that he looks nearly skeletal, unable to support his own weight without assistance, his ribs showing even through his bedclothes.

"Viktor," Jayce starts, fond and soft, though with a hint of sternness. "Put that down, at least while I'm visiting you. I've told you; Nothing good will come of it, it is not worth whatever you think is in there."

"I've tried to tell you, Jayce, but you still don't understand..." Viktor mutters, quiet despite his evident frustration. "It goes beyond what I need, it has so much more than a cure for me, if only I could just...Just, comprehend it!" Viktor coughs. "If I could only-" He coughs again, then falls into a fit, choking as Jayce comes to his side and straightens his back for him.

Jayce reaches to Viktor's desk and plucks a clean handkerchief from the small pile of them, shakes the dust from it, and holds Viktor's head forward by his jaw, rubbing gentle circles on his back. “Breathe,”

Viktor chokes and spits a glob of phlegm and clotted blood into the handkerchief. His shaky, raspy inhales and exhales return, and Viktor calms. His eyes are shiny with tears.

”I feel that you’re not trying,” Viktor whispers.

Jayce swallows, not sure what he thought he was going to see, but it was sure as hell not a shockingly handsome yet grotesquely ill looking man.

The rider turns back to the desert road. Jayce looks around. They're traveling a mostly empty part of the desert Jayce doesn't recognize, on a large metal draft horse. Behind them the horse is dragging-

"What in the heavens' name?! Why are you dragging corpses with us?!"

Behind them are four coffins, pulled by ropes attached to a hook built into the clockwork horse's sides. All four are unlabeled, all hastily constructed from grey, petrified wood.

"I will answer your questions after you've had a chance to get some rest, yes? All you must know for now is that you are not in danger, I did nothing to your coachman, and you can call me Viktor." He coughs a few times and his voice clears, just a little. "What should I call you?"

Viktor? Jayce has heard that name somewhere…

"Wait, Viktor? Viktor as in the Good Doctor? The clockwork engineer of the sulphur rails?"

"I don't call myself that, but yes, I am the person that incorrectly refers to."

“...So none of what they say about you is true?”

"What they say about me is vague. I can't imagine all of it is completely inaccurate. A broken clock is still right twice a day, after all."

"Hm. And here I was think'n you were a myth settlers tell their kids to get 'em to stop getting eaten by coyotes."

"I can be both, just by living a few nights' ride from anything and trading with outlaws. Can't be picky this far out."

”I don’t like the bandits part,” Jayce mutters.

”They're known to be brutes, but better my hands than theirs, eh?”

”The jury’s still out on that…”

Viktor perks up when he spots his pilot, a Terran man only a little younger than himself. He raises a hand and wheels himself forward a little to greet him. The pilot sees him and as he approaches removes his helmet with a soft hiss of pressurized air.

He smiles, and Viktor's first thought is that he's strange looking.

The pilot's skin is entirely a bronzy brown rather than the purple or grey that reaches Viktor's cheekbones, with dark eyes and a thick, bulky, muscular body so unlike Viktor's own thin, streamlined body. It's all made of soft, easily torn tissue rather than durable metal and carbon based cellular mesh, and his limbs are easily inches shorter than Viktor's, at least proportionally. When he smiles, his lips are red, as opposed to pale silver, though he has something closer to the color of Viktor's lips on the scar crossing the Terran's brow. They reveal a little gap in his teeth.

Of course, Viktor has met plenty of Terrans before during his time living on Runeterra.

The strange part is that he's smiling at him.

"Viegar will want to know if one of the gamers brought any kind of coding knowledge with them, especially modding...He could teach other gamers to code too, and who knows what he'll do if any of them figure out how to even approach sending us back to our games..."

He seems to come to a decision and turns back to Jayce. "It was my sincerest hope to avoid this,"

The secret boss extends his hand and blood rises from the floor, braiding into a staff. Five points of red light form around Jayce.

"No, wait! I'm not a gamer!" Jayce blurts. He's not sure why he even tries.

Viktor tilts his head, the dark screen that makes up his face somehow curious. "You're native to Arcadia?"

Jayce nods fervently.

"Oh, well why didn't you say so? That changes everything." Viktor comments, dismissing whatever attack he had ready with a flick of his wrist. Two status effects fade before Jayce even felt them. He extends a closed hand to Jayce. "I am Viktor, the Herald of the Arcade."

He's just minding his own business as any student has the right to do, enjoying his lunch break away from the to-do of other students with his crutch propped against the wall, out of the way of harm. Just studying, just eating lunch.

His name is Viktor-Jayce is still working on finding out what his last name is-and Jayce can't stand him. He can't put his finger on why he dislikes Viktor so much when Viktor hasn't spoken a word to him, but he does. He just does-Jayce has known that fact since the first time they had a class together. In that moment Jayce felt something weird, something unfamiliar to him, a squeezing in his chest that wasn't painful but wasn't pleasant either. He was left breathless and stunned-He assumes that it's humiliation he's feeling every time he sees him, or maybe even jealousy. Jayce needs to make Viktor feel the way he does, because he refuses to tolerate it alone.

He really doesn't know how no one else seems to see it.

Look at him, He wants to say. Sitting over there, chasing pills with banana milk like some kind of freak. Swallow them dry like a normal person!

Jayce pauses his glaring.

...Okay, he has no idea where that came from. He doesn't have much to complain about Viktor with if he's resorting to the way he takes his pills, but he'll find something better eventually.

Just as Jayce is pondering what could be wrong with him, Viktor looks around. He's obviously checking (unsuccessfully) to make sure no one is watching him, then pulls a screwdriver out of his backpack.

Oh?

Viktor watches every match. Analyses every movement. Every cyclonic blast, every strike of his hammer. He's intimately familiar with his capabilities and strategies.

Jayce is going to lose.

It's painfully obvious that he has no chance here. Pantheon has only prolonged this for as long as he has because he is angry. He wants Jayce to suffer.

Viktor can relate.

"¡Oh, la cosa no pinta bien para nuestro chico dorado!"

"Definitivamente está teniendo dificultades, Marcus."

You can take the bot out of the battle, but you can't take the battle out of the bot. Viktor is inclined to agree.

The bot watches in immense fascination as his supposed 'better half' is reduced to fending off his predecessor with a single functional arm and half of his hammer, triggering it manually and limping visibly. This must be what it's like to salivate before food.

Viktor manually focuses his optics on the replay, watching with special attention as Pantheon wrenches Jayce's leg from its socket and pierces his chassis with his spear, then pulls it uncaringly from his chest. Pantheon must not know about Riotcorp's habit of including auxiliary power cores, but Viktor can forgive him. Most companies don't want their bots to have very much understanding of their own schematics, beyond the obvious of avoiding blows to their head and chest, let alone other bots'.

Viktor's readout has already updated.

Pantheon. Targon Fabrications. 2x reign, 15 title defenses, 64V, 1L.

The light in Jayce's optics flickers, then fades. The end of Jayce's reign?

Viktor twitches. This is not as nearly as satisfactory as he thought it would be.

Pantheon stands atop Jayce's body, victorious. He doesn't play to crowd, doesn't have to. The bot takes hold of his spear and plunges it through the hole in Jayce's chest, hoisting him above his head, oil and coolant fluid raining down onto him.

The crowd cheers even harder.

Viktor doesn't care very much for his showboating. He zooms his optical lenses in on his face.

Something about this bothers him. This wouldn't be the first time an enforcer has been "investigating" and simply picked someone who has done nothing wrong off the street and brought them in for no real reason. It almost definitely won't be the last. The part that bothers Viktor intellectually though is that she seems to have heard of Viktor. If she knows anything real about Viktor, or even any of the rumors about him, who among the police does she think would be more qualified to interrogate him, he wonders?

By Viktor's best guess, an hour passes in silence. He's picked the lock in his handcuffs for the 14th time when the same pink and blue blur stomps back into the room, with someone following after her. Viktor tilts his head, squinting. A particular shade of red and brown, large golden gears-

He sighs. "Of course. Can no one think of me without immediately bringing you up?" Viktor could recognize that smug expression even through the blurriest vision.

Jayce and Viktor wake up on top of the Hexgate tower. They succeeded in preventing the ruined timeline of the mage and freeing the souls of the gloriously evolved, but when the dust clears, they both have to live with the consequences.

Jayce is finally out of adrenaline and willpower to ignore what he's been through in the ravine, but is expected to carry out his duties as one of the few remaining councilors. Viktor is no longer under the influence of the Hexcore, but is still connected to the drones keeping statuesque watch over Piltover and Zaun, and maybe more worryingly, can't remember anything since Jayce fused him with the Hexcore.

"Viktor?"

The man turns his head slowly, wary of the enforcer's hold on his hair, and stares at Jayce through it with the same golden eyes he silently agreed to end it all with. His hair is completely bleached of pigment, tinted pink like a bloody tooth by the arcane, but the rest of him is there-The sharp angles of his cheekbones, the slanted crease of his brow, both of his moles, back on their rightful place on his cheek and lip. He's naked, except for the blanket draped loosely over his shoulders, exposing a glowing pink and purple infection of the arcane through his skin, fading to soft, peachy flesh at his hips, but lingering along each of his ribs.

"Jayce?" His expression becomes even more confused. "What happened to you? We're...We're on top the Hexgate tower, right? And...Jayce, how-When did you grow a beard?"

That last question gives Jayce pause more than any of the others. "You're...You're questioning that?"

"I don't...I don't...How long was I out? You couldn't have grown that overnight...And who is this?"

Jayce looks between the enforcer and Viktor, blood still dripping from his nose and wrist, his head still pulsing, spots still floating lazily across his vision. The enforcer's face takes longer than it should to click-Caitlyn, no longer his well meaning little sister, hardened by his mistakes. He didn't think he'd ever see her again, assumed he was saying goodbye, but he didn't think he'd have to confront the parts he carved out of himself in the ravine either. It seems it won't be nearly that easy.

"How...Much do you remember?"

"You were...You were covered in dust, and...And your jacket was stained, you had blood on your face, I...You'd pressed your face to mine when you were...I think the blood spread to your face, and my chest hurt, I couldn't breathe-I couldn't breathe, and I asked you to destroy it, I begged you to destroy it before someone else was-...But you didn't. You didn't destroy it, it was still in the lab when you brought me there."
