Girih - Eigengrau

Girth is a band with a forward-thinking approach to their songwriting, falling somewhere in between eerie textures and dream-like melodies. It would be quite easy to pigeonhole them in the post-rock scene, as artists such as Russian Circles certainly come to mind. While the similarities with the most heralded names of that scene certainly come to mind, Girih certainly stands out with a very distinctive personality. On “Eigengrau”, the group managed to showcase an uncanny ability to play on the dynamic contrast in their arrangements, allowing math rock influences to creep in, without dominating their sound entirely. Their songs can easily move from whisper-quiet to mountain-crashing devastation. The crystalline guitar melodies give way to blaring guitar tones, which sounds monolithic and aggressive. Even at their most aggressive, Girih managed to retain a lot of melodic sensibilities in their sound, layering different textures through the clever use of looping techniques and other tricks of the trade.
