Rediscover • Part 1 • 7 - Nero
Previous • Series Masterlist • Part 1 Masterlist • Next
Nero follows the director, whom she now knows as Marilyn down the Hospital-like hallways. They still unnerve her, it’s surprising considering how much time she spent rearing young Rewinds in sterile environments.
“I’ve heard you’ve had a job in nursing, tell me about it,” Marilynn asks her.
Nero scratches the back of her neck. “It was more like an advanced daycare, my job was really just to educate the fresh Rewinds and make sure they felt comfortable in their bodies.”
“Hmm, that’s good nonetheless, keeping teens in a good state of mind will be a big part of your job.”
Nero is confused. “Won’t there be children too?”
Marilynn laughs. “I sure hope not!”
Soon they close in on a room simply labelled “Training Room”. Nero watches as Marilynn walks over to a filing cabinet to the side and picks out a DVD case. She opens it and hands the DVD to Nero.
“Insert this into the player when you go in, it’ll start up immediately.” Nero notices that almost all of Marilynn's peppiness is gone like life has drained out of her.
“Is something wrong? Are you okay?”
She looks at Nero, confused. “No?” She opens the door to the room for her, the first thing Nero notices is the only furniture in the room consists of a TV and its disc player, a comfy chair, and a side table simply holding a box of tissues. Nero snickers at the side table, “Is training the only use of this room?”
Marilynn looks to the side. “The walls are sound-proof, sometimes people will scream in here to get rid of pent-up frustration.”
Nero looks back at the tissues. “Riiiiiiiiiiiight.”
Marilynn’s voice, despite being dead of all emotion, somehow becomes soft, yet authoritative. “There are no security cameras in there, take your time and come out when you’re ready.”
Although still miffed about the ambience of this situation Nero steps through the doorway and is promptly closed in by Marilynn shutting the door for her. Nero inspects the room more, its floor and walls are made up of white fabric panels. She knows they’ve been there for a long time as when she softly punches one of them dust waterfalls out of it.
“This room is a big fire hazard.” She whispers to herself. She looks at the block of light on the wall and follows it back to a small window on the other side of the room. It’s placed in a way one would place a basement window, though Nero knows she isn’t underground. She finally goes to sit down in the chair, picking up the player from the floor. She inserts the disc and watches as the TV screen illuminates. Free-Range Camp Nursing: The Hand-Holder Nurse is what the screen reads, at the bottom of the screen she catches the words Happy Jack, those words seem familiar to her, has she heard them before? Perhaps they were listed as funders for this camp, this camp is called Jack’s Canadian Summer Camp after all. The video starts with a narration, it sounds like an older woman, maybe, the voice seems so cigarette-filled that it is hard to tell the gender of the voice.
Nero sits cross-legged as she sets the player down.
“A Hand-Holder Nurse is a very important job in a Harvest Camp, you will have the greatest impression on everyone you see.”
Harvest Camp? Harvest Camp! Nero has heard those words many times before she believes the last time she’s heard them was when Roland was talking about the events leading up to his original body’s unwinding. Wait, then what is she watching, oh god what is she watching?
“The job is very simple, you are to keep the unwind calm during the process of unwinding.”
What! WHAT! SHE’S TO WHAT! The screen then suddenly cuts to a boy panicking on a table, the boy is about Sam’s age, and he even sounds like Sam. Nero finds herself off of the chair and onto her knees she feels the static coming from the old TV as she has her hands pressed to it. The boy cries for help as directions on how to act are spoken, from the boy's reaction it’s clear that the instructions aren’t an audio overlay, they’re being told to you in real-time as the boy screams. As the video plays on it shows how to direct the unwind’s attention away from the cutting, it’s mostly focused on the face of the unwind, that poor, poor child, until it flashes to his body being taken apart. Suddenly, Nero feels her body tense up and ache; she curses as all the scar tissue stings like there’s no tomorrow. She’s really in for it now.
Nero can’t even pay attention to what’s on the TV screen anymore the voices scream in her head crying out wanting to go back to their bodies. They can’t, and they never will, not without tearing Nero apart herself, and she doesn’t want that. It seems like all those opportunities Nero takes lead her back to rotting in situations he’d rather not be in. Being at that support group brought her friendship with Roland, yes, but it also brought her pain through no one understanding or wanting to understand how she saw her own life. She found peace for a moment in the academy, but it only led to her friend becoming miserable and her going back to the military. And now she lays convulsing against the floor knowing she made another mistake of bringing her and Roland here. She could’ve been with Sam now, she wouldn’t care that she’d be on Molokai if she had her brother by her side. If she still didn’t want to be on Molokai, she could’ve been brewing coffee at three in the morning for Roland as he told her about all the crazy stories that came with being an EMT Helicopter Pilot. For a brief moment through all the struggling Nero hears only a blurb of the film. “Reassure the patient after their eyes have been removed that you are still here, then only, will you be allowed to leave.” Nero receives the worst headache ever as her brain implodes on itself screaming traitor, liar, and whatnot. She feels her fingers dig into her shoulders and her legs kick into the ground as Roland, Beth and her Biobuilder fingers do whatever they can to rage in her convulsing body. Nero lays on the floor teary-eyed wanting all of this to end, the video, the convulsing, and being stuck on this smelly padded floor. So she does the only thing she can, She takes a deep breath and lets out the loudest, anger-filled, blood-curdling scream she can muster up.
“You have come to the end of the training video, please return to your camp director when possible.”
Nero stares at the ceiling feeling sobered up, she’s finally able to reach up and grab tissues from the box. She feels hopeless in her situation as she stares at the end card of the video. Nero knows she’s in the palm of the enemy, and she must find a way out of it. But first, she’ll cry, she’ll cry her big heart out, she’s not sure if it’s the homesickness or the fear of what waits for her on the other side of that door, but she knows it can’t be good.
She looks at the garbage pail hidden from her sight when she first walked into the room. Nero goes to put the Kleenex in the garbage only to have second thoughts, she wonders if the staff would check the garbage after she’d left. See if she had cried. Nero stuffs the Kleenex in her bra before opening the door, outside is Marilynn waiting for her, Nero would’ve jumped if this wasn’t exactly what she expected.
Marilynn has the same stone-cold face when Nero returns the disc to her. She expects Marilynn to say something to her, but instead, she lifts Nero's veil and Nero immediately slaps her away. That gets Marilynn to react.
“Strong hands,” Marilynn mutters. She puts the disc away and ushers Nero into a backroom. Nero wonders if the shelves are planted on the wall or if she could knock one over and easily kill the director, pretending it was an accident.
Nero snaps out of it after being handed a few garments, she looks at the shirts, noticing they are a bright, sunshine yellow.
She cringes at them. “Is there any other colour?” She asks.
Marilynn blinks at her. “We all wear yellow.”
Nero huffs. “Isn’t Maha wearing blue?”
“We don’t have any blue shirts your size.”
Nero holds the garments close to her, frowning, she goes towards a bathroom to change. Upon entering she looks in the mirror to see a veiled figure looking back at her. Somehow the hard plastic mask she wore when she came here seems more comforting now. She begins to slowly undress and redress herself, although now wearing more modest and flowy attire she feels even more trapped and exposed than before. She feels nauseous like a patient anxious before their first surgery, not sure what exactly to expect. She takes the tissues out of her bra and throws them into the garbage already in use. Before leaving the bathroom Nero takes one last look at herself, her nose is stuffed, her eyes are puffy, and she has a very noticeable pout. She takes a deep breath and calms herself like she was taught to. At least serving in the military had some use in the end. She takes one last look at her yellow shirt and then dismisses it before her legs get any second thoughts and starts falling on her.
She returns to the main room to see Marilynn with Maha at her side, and she notices Marilynn has something in her hand. Once she gets close enough she’s handed the paper, Nero should’ve been surprised by what she saw, but when else would Marilynn have given her the list of every unwinds’ appointment with her?
“You’ll have to tell me how the first one goes.” Maha smiles. “I’ll be more ready for Fatima when her time comes.”
Nero can’t exactly give the stink eye if her eyes are out of view, so instead she turns her head to Maha for an uncomfortably long second before looking away. It gets her point across. Nero looks back at the paper and notices something. “Why am I hand-holding a 19-year-old?” She asks.
Marilynn clears her throat. “That’s Connor Lassiter, known for forcing unwinding out of the United States.”
Nero looks at her, confused. “Isn’t he a liberty fighter?”
“A war criminal really. We plan on unwinding him first before anybody else,” Marilynn gets closer to Nero. “I need you to gain his trust, he’s obviously hatching a plan to destroy us, and I need to be one step ahead of him, understand?”
“Yes ma’am!” Nero says out of habit before biting her tongue.
“Good.” She then leaves Maha and her alone, Maha takes the hint that Nero doesn’t like her and leaves soon after.
Nero looks at the page again, Connor Lassiter/Robert Saltries, set for unwinding on the 24th, that’s the guy she’ll help if she wants this place crushed beneath her feet.
Rediscover • Part 1 • 6 - Owen
Previous • Series Masterlist • Part 1 Masterlist • Next
A guy, no older than 16, places a tray of dinner rolls into a hotplate. Owen has never been one for kids, or for people in general, but he’s got to get his volunteer hours in somehow. This summer camp seems well funded, almost to a suspicious amount. He was surprised that there was an industrial dishwasher in the kitchen, he didn’t expect one, not like he’d complain about it though, dishwashing is no one’s favourite activity. The only thing to complain about is that he’ll have to wait until everyone else is done getting their food, he’ll have to watch them get all the good stuff leaving him with scrap. Tonight is a basic turkey dinner, something everyone will like, or at least pretend to.
As the last bit of food is placed a school bus-sized group of people come forth to the buffet. Owen hands out tapioca pudding cups at the end of the line as he side-eyes all the food dwindling and being replaced by more. As the amount of people slows down and seems more self-manageable Owen goes over to eye how much dark meat is left. He makes eye contact with the kid across the counter, trying to make small talk when he asks. “I wonder how this place is so well funded?”
The kid looks him in the eyes, he has a nasty scar that goes from his eye to his ear and runs down his neck and shoulder and there’s something wrong with his eye. “It’s a chop shop.” He says. Owen looks at him in bewilderment. “What? no.” He laughs, “This looks nothing like a chop shop, those things are probably terrifying.”
The guy just stares at him and shakes his head in disappointment almost as if he’s disqualified him from something before he moves on to the next hot tray.
The next person to come up scares Owen, he’s got hair like a morning star and he smirks as he eyes Owen. “Saw you looking at the dark meat, must be pretty good.” He takes a small piece of it as if almost tempting Owen in the process. “Umm, yeah it looked really good when it came out of the oven.”
The boy takes another piece. “Hmm, wow, do you think they seasoned it?”
“Uhh, yeah they even put the stuffing in it when it was cooking and erm..”
“Oh, sounds amazing, well, I might just have a little more.” Owen looks down as the boy leaves just a portion of dark meat left, he looks defeated as a masked man around his weight, but not his physique comes over to the hot tray. He looks up at Owen, or… somewhere around him, he really can’t tell with the mask. Owen almost goes to look behind him before the man angrily sighs, Owen watches the man jolt his head over to the boy and whispers. “Fucking pig,” Under his breath, he then turns back to Owen, who looks at him as if he’s at the will of a god.
The man sighs, “Do you want the last bit of dark meat?”
Owen sadly brushes him off, “No it’s fine, you take it, and if you don’t someone behind you will take it anyway.”
“I’m not asking you if I should leave it alone, I’m asking you if you want me to save it for you.”
Owen looks him in the eyes, or, rather, the blue square on his mask. “That, that, would be nice.” He stutterers out.
“Cool, I’ll save you a spot at the far left table.”
Owen becomes content and less begrudging about handing food out after that, knowing he’ll at least have some of his favourite food waiting for him. Before he can serve himself some of the adult staff come up to be served. A woman wearing a white pantsuit with a sunshine yellow blouse comes up to him, just as she’s about to speak when a security guard rushes up to her and whispers something in her ear. She frowns before looking back at Owen and waving the guard off. “You must be Owen, I’ve heard a lot about you. Not really a fan of kids?”
Owen shakes his head, “No ma’am just here for volunteer hours.”
“Well, I hope everyone is treating you well.”
“Well, actually…” Suddenly Owen realizes that all of the staff's eyes are on him.
“Spit it out dear! No one is here to judge you.” She says with a smile.
“This boy with spiky hair kept teasing me over the last bit of dark meat, it’s not really a problem though.”
The woman’s lips curved higher than they were before. “Oh, you mean Keegan, yes I’ve heard of him, he will be dealt with.”
Owen panics and waves his hands. “No, really ma’am, it’s not a problem!”
She simply hums before moving on to the next tray, which makes Owen worry that she’s taking justice over petty things into her own hands.
Owen finally gets his hands on his own plate, and of course, skips out on the turkey. Once he goes to the far left table he sees the man he was talking to, an umber girl and a Turtlefolk guy. The man looks up at him, his mask is shifted upwards on the ring that goes around his head, leaving enough room for him to eat. “I wondered if you’d show up.” He stabs into the big piece of meat with his fork and lets Owen pry it off with his own. “Thanks, you really didn’t have to do that.”
The man grunts. “I mother people, even if they don’t want to be mothered, I’ll stop doing it now… Though, I want to know something,” He turns to Owen. “Is that the first time Keegan has annoyed you?”
“Who?”
“Keegan, the spiky-haired guy.” The Turtlefolk guy responds.
“Oh, umm, yeah,” He answers sheepishly. “I hope it doesn’t happen again, a woman over there said he’d be dealt with, but, the last time an adult tried to step in the bullying got worse.”
“Maybe not the best way to deal with it.” The umber girl tells him.
“Honestly, I hope he gets Karma, if he wants to play stupid games, he’ll win stupid prizes,” The man turns towards him. “My name is Roland by the way, and this is Gigi and Mathieu, nice people, but you’ll probably be seeing me more anyway since I’m not taking care of kids.”
“I’m Owen, nice to meet you.” Owen shakes his hand, the way Roland introduced himself and the other had Owen thinking he created a gang and was inviting Owen into it. Considering Roland's generosity with the dark meat and their sympathies towards his concerns, Owen didn’t think he’d mind being in Roland’s gang at all.
Rediscover • Part 1 • 5 - Risa
Previous • Series Masterlist • Part 1 Masterlist • Next
Risa felt the cool air blow on her skin as she and Robert entered the main building, she looked at him, his face was serious.
“You won’t get anywhere looking like that.” She tells him.
“Like what?” He asks her flatly.
She shakes her head and sets her things down before grabbing hold of his hands. “You need to be approachable, who’s going to trust you when you tell them this place harvest camp looking like that?”
Robert sighs. “I’ll get approachable once they let me be.” He opens the door to the main room. “And who knows, maybe they know already, maybe they don’t care, and they’ll only start caring if they were the ones being unwound.” He lets her through first. Risa scowled at him before entering. He's been pessimistic lately, but at least not as much as his brother. Risa grabs hold of his arm. “Do you want to help these kids, or not?” Connor gives her a dirty look, but she brushes it off, finally looking towards the little crowd of camp counsellors and whatever else this horror camp brought in.
As Risa gets closer to the group she feels herself almost getting knocked off her feet as a girl grabs for her arm, Risa hears a loud thud as she sees one of those big first aid kits hit the ground.
“I am so sorry!” The girl in front of her tells her, she pulls Risa back up to the right angle, she almost tries to dust her off before Risa backs away. “It’s fine, really.” The girl hesitates, she picks the bag off the floor. “Would you mind giving this to the boy in the back over there, I just have so much to do, I can’t go squeezing through that big group of people.” It seems like an excuse to Risa, but it’s in her best interest to cooperate rather than be unhelpful. Risa takes the bag, heaving it over her already sore shoulder from carrying her luggage. “I can do it.” She smiles, watching as the girl rushes off to another room after thanking her, she must have actually been in a hurry.
Risa squeezes through the interlocked groups of people, getting a few deadpan and apologetic looks. She gets to the back of the room and elevates the pain from her shoulder causing the bag to hit the ground for the second time now.
“Is that for me?” A voice asks, Risa turns her head to find the voice and is horrified. There’s a very tall muscular guy beside her, but that’s not what scares Risa, it’s his face. He got one of those masks used for Recalls, Risa knew Recalls existed, but this was the last place she thought she’d see one. She quivers in confusion as the guy hunches down to her level, shadowing his hands over her shoulders. “Are you okay?” He asks.
“I, I,” She shudders.
“What’s your name?”
“Risa, Risa Wa-Wion.” She spits out.
There’s a moment of awkward silence between them, in that time Risa swears she hears a soft “oh.” come from the guy’s mouth.
“I’m Roland.” He tells her. Risa's eyes widen, and she backs up a little, never expecting to hear those two words ever again. Sure, there are probably a dozen unwinds named Roland, but the fact that she’s met a second, it irks her a little.
Risa grimaces at Roland, as she backs up, he lunges in arm towards her shoulder, she screams at impact.
“Careful!” He yells. “You were gonna trip on that bag and crack your head open!”
Risa glances behind her, not ignoring the hand still glued to her shoulder, she becomes embarrassed once realizing the bag is only a hair away from her feet. Roland lets go of her and grabs the bag. “Do you not like me?” He asks.
“No, no, it’s just,” She pauses. “Your name.”
Roland laughs. “You don’t like my name?” Risa nods, smiling to herself, double embarrassed. He folds his arms. “Well, I don’t like your name either, Risa.” He says in a joking manner. “So why are you here?”
Risa quickly makes up a lie on the spot. “I’m coming here for an adventure.” She tells him.
He laughs. “That involves taking care of children? And aren’t you from France, what the hell brought you here?”
Risa grimaces even more, this guy reads her like an open book. “I’m fine with taking care of children, besides where I live it’s all boat ports, I’ve never seen rocky earth this beautiful.”
Roland tilts his head, Risa knows he’s not fully satisfied with that answer, but he lets it go anyway.
“So why are you here?” She asks.
He scratches the back of his head. “It’s kinda like rehab, it’s just to put me more into the community, and make me feel less sorry about my existence.” His voice gets quieter as he keeps talking, but Risa hears him nonetheless. “Why would you feel sorry about that, your probably existence matters a lot.”
Roland folds his arms and turns his head away from her. “You shouldn’t say that. You’ll regret it,” He looks through the sea of people, spotting Robert. “I haven’t seen him yet.”
“That’s Robert, he’s my boyfriend.”
“Does he like watching kids too?”
Risa frowns. “No, he’s just here because I am.”
Roland nods. “I had a boyfriend.”
“Had?”
“Yeah, I said something about wanting to remember an event and that ticked him off. He went cold.”
Risa goes to say something until Roland adds more. “Looks like your boyfriend is already making friends with weirdos.” Risa looks across the room to see Connor with a spikey-haired guy.
“Are we talking about Keegan?” Risa looks down across the room to see a boy sitting in the corner.
“Yeah, we are. That’s Mathieu by the way.” He addresses both Mathieu and Risa.
“What’s so weird about him?” Risa asks.
“He kept asking me stuff about my unwinding,” Roland responds.
Risa tries to give Keegan the benefit of the doubt, making allies is one thing, but making sure they can work together is another. “I’m sure everyone is just curious.”
“Yeah, that’s the problem,” he snarls. “You wouldn’t like it if, if-” He struggles for a moment. “People asked if your vagina was tight because they had to stitch you back together!” He spat.
Risa gasped. “Excuse me!”
“Yeah, you think innocently, but people will ask you all sorts of horrible questions! We’re no more respected than how much we were when we were unwinds… I’m sorry about that vagina comment that was…”
“Too far, yeah.” Risa power walks away from Roland, towards Connor and Keegan. As she walks up to them she sees Keegan’s eyes light up and he smiles at her. She doesn’t pay him any attention, instead turning to Connor. “We might have a problem.” She tells him.
“What is it?”
“There’s a Recall, in the back.” She whispers she thinks it’s low enough for Keegan not to hear, but she’s wrong.
“Oh, you’re talking about Roland, yeah, he’s weird.”
Risa frowns again, looking at Keegan. “And I heard you were asking him weirder questions.”
Keegan furrows his eyebrows, glaring at her. “Relax, I was just asking him where he got unwound, not if his asshole was loose.” He then goes back to smiling, Risa doesn’t like his smile. “See I’ve got a kid in my head named Roland, I just wanted to know if it was the same guy,” His expression then changes like a greater power has taken hold of his body. “I hope not, and stop calling me kid! I’m- I was- we are seventeen!”
Both Connor and Risa look at him in horror, what on earth was that? Keegan shakes it off, smirking at them. “Sorry, he likes to talk sometimes.”
“And you’re fine with that?” Connor asks.
“No, it’s the reason I’m here, dad says I needed a little vacation,” His face then becomes devilish. “Yeah right, y’know what I think, you’re getting unwound.” The boy states.
Risa's eyes widen as she looks into his own. “How old are you again?” She asks, depending on his answer, whoever controls his mind might be right.
“Seventeen, he told you just now. But c’mon, you seriously think I’m getting unwound?” His face goes from being playful to serious. “Your dad said something about unwinding here, and I don’t think he meant it in the relaxing sense.” Keegan’s face falls a bit, finally understanding Roland’s gloominess over the situation.
“I don’t think that’s the case,” Connor tells him. “I don’t think someone would wait until seventeen to unwind a kid they didn’t like.”
Keegan glares at him, it’s a mean and vicious glare, it tells both Connor and Risa that Roland had an unwind order signed for him almost last minute.
Connor changes his tone, putting a hand on Keegan’s shoulder. “Listen if you help us there’s less of a chance that any of the kids here get unwound, and I promise you, your safety will be kept in mind as well.”
Roland’s bitter tone still echoes through Keegan, “Less? Any? Do you plan on making sacrifices?”
Connor scowls. “You know what I meant.”
“I try not to nowadays, it usually leads to dead dogs.” It’s such a weird line, Keegan’s eyes almost cross, as if they’re looking inward at himself. He then shakes it off and frowns. “Ignore him, he says weird things,” He then holds his hand out for Connor to shake. “I’ll join your cause, I’ll even pass the word along.”
Connor takes as Risa watches them gain their first ally. “Thank you, but we’ll be taking recruiting from here, we don’t exactly know how high security is yet.”
Rediscover • Part 1 • 4 - Nero
Previous • Series Masterlist • Part 1 Masterlist • Next
Nero follows one of the scrubbed nurses down the tiled hallways. From what she can tell every medical employee wears yellow, and there’s a lot of them, an absurd amount for a summer camp even. All the yellow scrubs make her antsy, or more specifically her legs, Roland seems to be trembling around like he hasn’t eaten in a long time.
The nurse opens a door into a different room, It looks more homey, like a nice renovated cabin. Nero first notices a Muslim girl dressed in all whites, mostly because she’s the brightest thing in the room. She then turns her head to the sound of elevated shoes hitting the floor. A woman comes towards her, wearing a white pantsuit with a sunshine yellow blouse. She had blonde curly hair that enveloped her face and a modern-looking necklace hanging from her neck. She was beautiful.
“Hello, you must be Nero?” She asks.
“Y-yes ma’am!” She shudders.
The woman lets out the most wholesome little giggle Nero has ever heard. “Oh no need to be afraid of me dear, I might be the camp director, but I’m still a very nice woman,” She ushers to her. “Come, I’ve got something for you.”
She leads Nero over to the break room and into her office. Nero looks at all the things she can get her eyes on in the room. Binders full of paperwork, frames on the wall with… medical degrees??? and a frame on her desk with a little boy in it.
“Do you have a son?” Nero asks.
The woman nods as she rummages through one of the desk drawers. “He’s about your age, He’ll be here with us over the two-week stay.”
She then finally fishes out a small white veil and beaded flower clip, handing the clip to Nero she explains. “I give one to each nursing volunteer I get, I even gave one to Maha today, though I don't exactly think she could wear it.” She then goes around to the back of Nero with the veil.
“May I take off your mask?”
“Are, are you allowed to?”
“This is private property, you’re allowed to take off your mask while under my care.”
Nero nods, letting her gently remove the plastic ring holding the mask to her head from her forehead. Then, she replaces it with a veil made out of one-way translucent fabric. Stepping back, the woman puts a fist up to her mouth. “I suppose you’ve become a little eerie now, but I guess that's better than having the word hostile on your face.”
Nero nods. “It is.”
“We’ll start training you tonight, for now, you can go hang out with your friends or go sit with Maha and Fatima.”
Nero excuses herself from the office and heads back to the room she found the Muslim girl in. She sees that only the little girl in white is present.
“Where’s the other one?” Nero asks, getting the girl’s attention.
“Maha? She’s in the bathroom.” The girl tells her.
“So you must be Fatima?”
The girl nods.
“Y’know I understand you have to cover yourself, but why wear white, won’t you ruin your clothes easily out here?” Nero asks.
“I’ll be inside most of the day, besides, it’s better if I don’t cook outside in black isn’t it?”
Nero laughs. “I guess you’re right.”
“I can’t wait to help people like you, it must have been scary losing all those parts.” Fatima’s eyebrows are very upturned so she’s still very expressive despite her nose and mouth being covered.
“Umm, no, that’s, I’m a Rewind, not an accident victim,” Nero explained.
“Oh.”
Nero shifts away from her as Maha comes out of the bathroom. “You’re Nero right?” She asks.
“Yeah.”
“It’s nice to meet you, I’ll be taking care of Fatima these two weeks.”
Confused, Nero asks. “Is she your understudy?”
“Well, I am her spiritual adviser and hand-holder nurse.”
“Right…” Nero walks off towards the door, and heads back towards the others, deeply confused by the situation she was just in.
Rediscover • Part 1 • 3 - Mathieu
Previous • Series Masterlist • Part 1 Masterlist • Next
Chapleau Cree Fox Lake Indian Reserve is about seven hours away from the summer camp in Muskoka, because of the direction Mathieu doesn’t join the others on the bus to the camp. He’s being transported alone in the back of the car of an absolutely chatty Sienna named Timothy.
Mathieu ignores him; instead he watches the dashboard hula girl violently rock back and forth as Timothy traverses the rocky terrain. Timothy is halfway through talking to nobody when Mathieu asks him about the girl.
“What’s with the little lady?”
Timothy pauses. “Huh?”
Mathieu hangs his arms around the seat in front of him, placing his chin on its shoulder he points with his lips over to the figurine. “The little dancer on the dashboard.”
Timothy nods and smiles. “All the company vehicles have one. It’s to match the theme of the camp. Well, maybe not in July, we like to get a little festive like our friends down under.”
Mathieu nods, he sighs out of boredom before throwing himself back in his seat.
“So what’s going on with your family?” Timothy asks.
“My Dad went with my sisters to a Powwow since it’s getting close to the end of the season. They usually all go just to cheer on my younger sister.”
“You mean your little sister?”
“No, they’re both older than me.”
“Oh, I’ve never been to a Powwow, are they fun?”
Mathieu blows air out from between his lips before answering. “I’d say so, I don’t dance like my sister does, I just watch.”
“I wonder if there are any vendors there.”
“There is, but don’t expect anything to be cheap. They know what their work is worth.”
Timothy laughs, then happily sighs. “I guess I’d understand their reasoning, personally I wished people would pay more for my work, though I suppose it’s up to the government how much I get paid.”
“Is it like a Federal Union?” Mathieu asks.
“Yeah, I suppose it is, though sometimes it depends on the quality of the product.”
Mathieu furrows his eyebrows, confused about what the quality of a product would have to do with a summer camp, much less how there would be a federal union running at something done providentially.
Midway through the several hours Timothy rolls into an ONroute and gets out of the car. The building is monstrous in size, its roof is high enough to house the semi-trucks that park around it. “I’m gonna get a bathroom break and some food, are you joining me?” Timothy asks him.
Mathieu nods, getting out of the car and taking the handle of the entrance door once Timothy passes into him.
After going to the bathroom Mathieu gets in line with Timothy to get food. “What do you think you’ll get?” Timothy asks him.
“I’m not sure yet it’s been a while since I’ve been to a Tim Hortons or anywhere really.”
“I’m guessing your parents would rather make home-cooked meals instead?” Tim laughs.
Mathieu shakes his head. “No, well yes, it’s just that everything around us is super expensive, sometimes even food is priced like it’s a novelty.”
“Ah, well you’ll be happy knowing you won’t break the bank here!”
Mathieu lets out a little ‘tch’ noise, “I hope not!”
Mathieu heads back to the car with jalapeño bread twists and what he’s pretty sure is a Coffee Crisp in slushie form. As they keep driving through forests Mathieu imagines a little stick figure running through the trees to keep up with them. Apparently, that’s a shared experience almost everyone has. It's strange how deep down everyone imagines the same thing despite never passing the idea to each other.
As he doses off more the car becomes slower, and he’s jolted awake by rumble strips, he sees the car pass between two totem poles, they must be in the camp now. Timothy passes into a round parking lot in front of one of the main buildings.
Mathieu gets out of the car with his carry-ons and is greeted with two large hibiscus bush hedges wrapping around the path to the main building. Timothy nods at him before driving off the car to god-knows-where. Mathieu would be annoyed at his sudden abandonment if it weren't for the fact he was stuck in that car all day. He looks up at the building, it’s made up of an A-line roof with the entire front wall being a giant window. He assumes he’s supposed to head up the stairs into the building. He walks up the creaky steps, struggling to get his suitcase up the horribly built stairs.
“Can I help you with that?” Mathieu looks over to where the voice comes from, and he’s horrified. There’s a muscular tall being a meter away from him with a mask displaying the word ‘HOSTILE’ where its face should be.
He struggles to put another stair step in between both of them. “I’m, I’m fine.” He tells it.
“Are you sure?” It asks in a gruff woman’s voice, Mathieu looks down at it, putting another step in between them. He sees all the different body grafts and wonders if its voice is even its own.
“Yes. I can carry my own things.” He uses a defensive tone with it.
“Is this about the mask? Because…” the figure suddenly slumps over. “Never mind, your opinion wouldn’t change either way.”
Mathieu can’t help but feel a little sympathetic towards the figure, even as he flees up the stairs with his hands full. Finally getting to the doors, he finds that the other counsellors have made a pile of luggage in the entryway, the only thing they probably took inside was their phones. Mathieu does the same and starts walking into the main room to meet the other counsellors.
He walks towards the other camp counsellors, he thinks all will be fine until he gets closer to the group and everyone starts staring at him. Feeling intimidated, he awkwardly laughs, letting out a little “hi” as he makes his way around them to the back of the room. He sits in the corner, shrouded by the counter screwed to the wall. Mathieu is ashamed that he’s like this, his older sisters would’ve stood high and mighty even if everyone was looking at them, he on the other hand can’t stand all the gazes.
“You good?”
Mathieu raises his head to look across the room, he’s met with a white mask with a light blue square on it looking back at him. The word over the square reads ‘MODIFIED’, kinda like how that other figure had the word ‘HOSTILE’ on their mask.
“I’m fine,” He responds. “You?”
The figure taps its mask. “Fine too, but this thing is a pain in the ass.”
“Why do you have to wear it?”
“I don’t know, I guess it’s some stupid government mumbo jumbo.” The figure groans as it gets up to come sit beside him. “I’m guessing you don’t really want to be seen either?”
Mathieu shakes his head slowly, letting out a soft “no.”
“Yeah, they kept asking me questions, so I just put myself in this corner. Everyone here seems to think I’ll be happy to answer all their questions because I’m Modified because I’m the best version of what comes back around. Well, screw it! I want to be left alone!”
“Yahē!” Mathieu exclaims. “I agree.”
The figure lifts a hand towards him, there’s some wrist wrap on it. “Come join the club… uh?”
Mathieu shakes his hand. “Mathieu. What’s with the wrist wrap?”
“Roland. I just twisted it, it’ll be fine.” He waves it off, his head suddenly jolts towards an umber girl coming towards them.
She looks at Mathieu. “Sorry, I just wanted to say that I liked your braids.”
He smiles and nods. “Thanks, my mom told me they’d last longer out here, I’ll still probably take them out at least two times.”
The girl nods, “Personally I can keep my dreads in for longer, though I don’t think the smell of a campfire would mix too well with them.”
Mathieu laughs while Roland turns to the girl. “I don’t think we’ll be doing any campfires anyways, all of our food is supposed to come from a cafeteria… So have you come to join the ‘We don’t want to be bothered.’ Club?”
The girl shrugs, “Maybe, that boy over there kept trying to touch my hair.” She gestures to a menacing-looking teen with spiked hair.
“Yeah, that guy screams ‘asshole’. He's started to look at me funny ever since I introduced myself to him.”
The girl nods. “Judging by his head scars, he’s most likely got an unwind part in his brain, maybe he feels guilty.”
Roland wraps his arms around himself. “No, it wasn’t like that, he kept trying to ask where I was unwound and where my body was stored, I didn’t answer him, not like I’d even know the answer to the second question.”
“Weird,” The girl holds her hand. “You guys can call me Gigi by the way.”
“Mathieu.” He shakes her hand.
“Roland.” He states, he doesn’t go in to shake her hand, rather, he stays wrapped up in himself. Mathieu wonders if what that boy said to him really cut into his psyche.
“If you don’t mind me asking Roland,” Gigi asks him, trying to stare him in the eyes as much as she can through the mask. “How are you kept when you’re unwound?”
Roland looks down, it’s hard to read whether he’s thinking or been made uncomfortable by the question. “I don’t remember, I think a nurse told me it’s like a freezer aisle, and that every door has a different kid on display.” He tells them.
“How long were you like that?” Mathieu asks.
“Two years I think, they never tell ya this, but there’s already too many kids going around to be used. Even then, the section I was put in made undesirable… but, whatever keeps me whole I guess.”
“What section were you put in?” Gigi prods.
“The exotic section.” He states plainly.
Mathieu cringes, he looks at Gigi. “Is there really an exotic section?”
Gigi shakes her head. “I've never seen one, then again, I’ve only ever been in one of those shops once in my life.”
“Why’d they put you in that section?” Mathieu asks. “No offence, but I don’t really see anything… about you… that would be…”
“My guess was that he had a horrible personality, he almost killed a kid when he was alive.”
“He?” Gigi questions.
Roland nods. “I’m not supposed to consider him myself anymore, since I’m modified, I’m more like a bug-fixed clone of the original,” He pauses. “I don’t like thinking about it too much. Other than that, I can only assume they picked up on him and I being a second-generation immigrant.”
“Oh, where do your parents come from?” Gigi asks.
“My mom is still from the U.S., but my dad comes from Spain.”
“Ah, right, you’re one of the people coming into Canada for this camp.”
“Uh-huh, how many of us are there? I already travelled with my friend to get here.”
“Well, I think there’s one more person from the U.S., then there’s two from France.”
“France? Wow, I would not have come here if I was all the way from France.” There was a tone of disbelief on Roland’s tongue, Mathieu almost certainly knew his eyes had gone wide open as well.

Of course, because of the piloting license, he was deeply trusted by security, and this made him feel like a fraud. These people would’ve once torn him to shreds, now they’re just giving him friendly reminders that his mask should stay on at all times once he crosses the border.
Roland goes to itch the bridge of his nose before his finger is stopped by the shield of plastic covering his face. He sighs, lifting the bottom of the mask with one hand to awkwardly squish a finger in up to his nose to itch it.
“Tired?” Nero asks him. She looks all ready for the summer, pink, floral, ruffled crop top and all.
He shakes his head. “No, I just hate travelling already.”
Nero quietly laughs, she nudges him. “At least you’re not already being profiled. When I was in charge of air delivery I was feared and respected with this mask on. Now, everyone who looks at me thinks they’re my next victim.” It had surprised both of them that Nero wasn’t profiled for Mason’s face but rather the symbol on her mask, even if she was labelled hostile by proxy.
“At least you’re not being baby-talked and coddled.”
“I’d rather have that than whatever I’m getting now.”
Roland turns away from her, looking towards the window. He watches the clouds go by as they keep moving forward, even though he’s older and understands what clouds are made of, they never stop looking so fluffy to him. He imagines they would be great for laying on when his back aches, and they’d probably be just as comfortable as Hayden’s bed sheets.
Hayden, it had been a week since he’d been at his apartment. He told himself that he’d leave Hayden’s side before the guy had the chance to wake up, but as Roland started stirring around 4 all he wanted to do was to lay back down in Hayden’s arms. So he did, and in the morning he woke up to Hayden having placed an arm around him while the other one scrolled his phone. Roland moved towards his face, their eyes locked and so did their lips. After a moment he pulled away from him, Hayden looked star-struck, he set down his phone and pulled Roland onto him. He hung his arms around Roland's neck as he turned the kiss into something more. After a moment of passion, Roland breaks away from him, panting. “I guess the second time's the charm.” He laughed. His forehead was still planted against Hayden’s, but he could feel him frown.
“I don’t want to forget about the party, Hayden.” He could feel himself being gently pushed off of him.
“Hayden?” He calls out as Hayden rises from the bed. “Do you want breakfast?” He asks flatly as puts a housecoat around himself.
“Hayden?” He calls out again.
“It’s a yes or no question, Roland.” There’s a sense of sadness in his voice.
Roland gives up trying to get an answer from him. “Yes Hayden, I’d like breakfast.” He sighs.
It felt like he could still feel Hayden’s lips against his, for how roughly they were pressed against each other it felt like a flame went out when he was let go.
Humour is something Nero can do, it’s something that makes everything seem okay, people are made happy and she can go on with her life knowing that others think she’s full of joy. But she’s not. Nero has been doing nothing but brooding behind a happy exterior. She has felt empty ever since Sam left to visit Molokai. The emptiness is like the one she once felt during the beginning of her rewinding, the one that she constantly filled with something new. She had forgotten how painful and irritating it felt.
It will be hard to fill that void on this trip if it can even be filled at all. Roland’s company doesn’t seem to be doing anything for her, and it’ll be almost impossible to have friendly conversations with others when the word ‘HOSTILE’ is projected on her face.
At least there’s Bambi, Bambi seems to listen to her problems as long as she listens to hers. The only problem is that she hasn’t told Bambi about her face yet, and she feels she’s gone too far in their relationship to tell her now. It would be like betraying her, so no matter what, she swears she’ll never meet Bambi in person. Even if she's the closest thing to her child’s father.
Nero huffs, folding her arms after placing earplugs in to drown out the sound of a crying baby. She looks to the man beside her on the outer row, who has been doing nothing but nervously humming for thirty minutes, these earplugs might be good for drowning him out too.
The absence of sound unnerves her; there's the sound of a boy panicking in her head while two older voices calm the boy. He seems to be freaking out, telling them he can’t hear. Nero takes out one of the earplugs, waves it in her view and puts it back into her ear, hoping she got the message across to the boy who screams in her head.
Nero sighs and lays her head against the back of the chair, slowly dozing off. Dreams are weird for Nero. They always play out like little kids role-playing and then getting mad that the other kid isn’t playing the way they want to. Her dreams go one way, and then someone in her head disagrees with it and somehow tunes it the way they want it to go. If she doesn’t have completely mundane dreams all night they’re usually feverish nightmares.
She wakes up bleary-eyed as Roland continuously taps her on the shoulder.
“Guh, it’s time to get off now isn’t it?” She asks, rubbing her eyes.
Roland nods, he passes her down the gym bag she brought on the flight. Once Roland gets his things both of them get off the plane and into the airport, where they’re set to get on a bus that will take them all the way to a camp in Muskoka.

As last week's shipments all go out, Timothy Jackelette stands in front of a big family picture hung on the wall in the break room. His great-grandfather had helped build Happy Jack Harvest Camp with his brother, and he all by himself had built the harvest camp Timothy stands in today. This Camp was passed from his great-grandfather to his grandfather, to his mother, and when she becomes too old to run it anymore it will be his. He has a lot to live up to, but he’s sure he’s ready for it.
Happy Jack was destroyed by clappers, a shame really, because when it was destroyed it was housing Connor Lassiter, the Akron Awol. A lot of people thought he was dead after that, but then he reappeared and then was gone again. Like the first time, people still think he died, but Timothy is pretty sure Connor Lassiter has reappeared on Jack’s doorstep. He turns towards the manager's office, ready to discuss the topic with his mother.
He knocks on the door.
“Come in.” His mother answers.
Timothy walks into the office, facing his mother. “I’ve come to discuss one of two counsellors coming in from France, Robert Saltries.”
“You mean Connor Lassiter.” She says bluntly.
Timothy smirks. “I knew it was him, I just had to make sure I wasn’t going crazy,” He paused. “So what now? Do we get him arrested?”
“I have a better idea.” Her iconic sickly sweet smile starts to form.
“If I’m thinking what you’re thinking, then, how?”
“I’ve talked with higher-ups, there are loopholes. Notice the stitch marks on his face.”
Timothy starts to connect the dots. “He’s been Recalled.”
“Not necessarily, but he counts as one.”
Timothy starts to smile. “So, he’s Stable, he can be re-unwound.”
Her smile has fully formed. “Indeed he can.”

Previous Part
10 - Bad Trip
Hayden isn’t really sure when he wakes up, an hour, two hours maybe, all he knows is that when looks at Roland his eyes are completely bloodshot, and he’s got a really goofy expression on his face.
“Hi yin-ass, are you enjoying my man-titties?”
The ridiculousness of whatever just came out of Roland's mouth makes Hayden sit up and burst out laughing.
“Oh? You think I’m funny?” Roland asks.
“Hah, well you put me there, so I think you’re even more of a yin-ass.”
“Well, you stayed there.”
“You wanted me there.”
“Man, I must really like weird boys like you.”
“Hey! I’m not weird.”
“Noooooooooo, I’m pretty you said your favourite food was Spam one time in the basement, so do you still like Spam, Spam-eater?”
“I do, but at least I eat it in style now.”
Roland laughs. “How can you eat Spam in style, that’s impossible.”
“Ever heard of Spam musubi?”
“No.”
“Well, it’s a slice of Spam on rice wrapped in seaweed.”
“That sounds, really fucking good. Anything sounds really fucking good right now.”
Hayden giggles. “Oh, whoops, I forgot to feed you earlier.” He feels Roland palm his face, putting pressure on his nose so that it goes up like a pig's snout. “Asshole,” Roland says.
Hayden moves Roland’s hand away from his face; he sets it down and moves all the way off Roland.
“Aww, don’t go.” Roland puts both his hands up and tries to grab for Hayden.
“I’m not going anywhere, I’m just getting off you.”
“But now I feel so lightweight, so empty, so incomplete.”
Hayden reaches over to pat Roland’s cheek. “Oh boo hoo, you’ll survive.”
Roland folds his arms. “You know what? I could live with you.”
Hayden raises his eyebrows and smiles. “Really?”
“Yeah, I could do research with you, do rich people stuff with you, talk shit on your radio show, and go to parties with you.”
“I don’t think we’ve got the best history with parties. There’s that time I had so many microphones in my face, and another time a lot of girls tried to hit on me…”
“And that date.” Roland giggles.
Hayden laughs “Yeah, that was pretty stupid.”
11 - Party
Hayden becomes more and more tipsy as he drinks, it’s alarming because he’s only had one drink. Roland feels bad whenever he gives Hayden the cold shoulder, but he can’t help it if all he can think about is his ex. It’s honestly driving Roland miserable and insane. He looks back over at Hayden, who’s starting to act like Roland’s mother, well, when she’s drunk, at least he's not berating him.
Honestly, anytime he looks at that drunk person he’s just reminded of his mother and stepfather. That’s why he’ll never drink, he doesn’t want to end up hurting someone like they hurt him.
Hayden hums a tune, it’s very off-key.
“What are you humming?” Roland asks.
“Twinkle, twinkle, little star.”
“Really? Sounds more like you’re trying to summon a demon.”
“Whatever hot stuff.”
Roland won’t lie, all this flirting and complimenting is getting to him, but then it’s being constantly shrouded by all the flirting and complimenting Trevor used to do. He can’t even totally like the fact that Hayden got him flowers without thinking about how Trevor also got him flowers. At least with Hayden Roland likes him, even if they don’t end up together, it won't be awkward, they’ll just stay friends. Unlike Trevor, whom Roland couldn’t even bear to be in the same room as him after the assault.
Hayden gently grabs his hand, swaying it back and forth. “Are you having fun?” He asks.
“We haven’t really been having fun yet, but the food is good,” Roland replies.
“We can go dance.” He suggests.
Roland laughs in spite of himself. “I think you're too drunk to do that now.”
Hayden gets up. “I’m not that drruuuuunnk.” He slurs, he grabs Roland by the forearm and leads him to a bigger part of the mansion that’s currently being used as a ballroom. “You wanna dance with me now?” Hayden asks. Roland looks off to the side, there’s a corner of the room that doesn’t seem so bright and noisy. “Could we dance over there?” Roland asks, pointing to the corner.
“In the dark pit?”
“That’s a corner, Hayden.”
“Oh, ok.”
Roland drags Hayden over to the corner, to his surprise when they get there Hayden slumps down into a squat. Roland kneels on the floor beside him. “Are you okay?”
“I just want to sit down.”
“But you were just sitting.”
“Hmm,” Hayden huffs, and he looks over to Roland. “Do you love me?” He asks.
Roland is taken aback, he didn’t expect Hayden to be so blunt about it, but the next thing Hayden does shocks him even more. Hayden presses his lips against Roland’s, giving him a kiss. “Now you try.”
Roland touches his lips in shock, he looks over at Hayden, who looks completely love-struck.
12 - Bad Trip
Roland’s eyebrows turn downward. “Yeah, it was,” He sneered.
Hayden looks at Roland, puzzled and scared.
“I thought we were going to hang out and dance together, instead you got yourself piss drunk and I had to drive you home.”
Hayden, understanding that Roland is high out of his mind, tries to let him down easily.
“You said you’d take me home.”
Big mistake, Roland becomes more erratic. “I DIDN’T TELL YOU YOU COULD GET DRUNK BITCH!” He yells. “DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MISERABLE I WAS, NO, YOU DON’T, BECAUSE YOU WERE BUSY GETTING DRUNK BECAUSE YOU COULDN’T JUST LEAVE ME ALONE FOR TWO SECONDS!”
Roland grabs for Hayden’s shirt, burying himself in it.
“You reminded me of my parents, of my ex-boyfriend.” He cries. Hayden tries to pat Roland’s back, but he’s immediately met with a blood-curdling scream. “I thought I told you already, I’M SENSITIVE THERE!”
Roland gets off Hayden, stumbling over to the kitchen where he hides from his view between the counter and the island.
Hayden gets up once he can’t hear Roland moving anymore, he goes over to the island and looks over it to see Roland. Roland wraps his arms around himself. “Go away, pervert!” He growls.
“How am I a pervert?” Hayden asks.
“Because,” Roland looks at himself, he then unwraps his arms and stretches out his legs. “Just go away!”
Hayden goes back over to the couch and pretends to watch TV, in reality, he’s got a pretty good view of Roland from here even if Roland doesn’t notice. He wonders if Roland thinks the knobs on the drawers are eyeballs; it would explain the weird comment he got just now.
13 - Party
“I, I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“Because you’re drunk.”
“But I want you to kiss me.”
“Maybe another time.” ‘When I’m not thinking of my ex and you’re not completely and utterly drunk.”
Hayden frowns as he shakily gets up off the floor. “Then can we at least dance together?” He asks, annoyed. Roland quickly gets up to hold his hands, for the fear that Hayden might turn into something akin to his mother.
As they sway Hayden looks lovingly at Roland, while he tries to avoid his gaze. Hayden tries to get closer, but Roland takes a step away. “Sorry,” Hayden whispers, at least he seems to be becoming more self-aware now.
Roland is embarrassed by Hayden, he thought tonight would awaken new feelings within him. Instead, he just sways half heartedly with his drunken date. “Mmm,” Hayden hums, he lays his chin into Roland’s neck. He starts to kiss it, and Roland can’t help but cry. He wants to enjoy Hayden’s affections, but with him being terribly drunk and Roland’s thoughts filled with Trevor, this experience is terrible.
“I love you,” Hayden whispers into Roland’s ear.
“I know.” He cries back.
“Do you not love me back?” Hayden asks as he places another kiss on Roland’s neck, Roland doesn’t respond.
“Mmm, I don’t care anyway, I’ll love no matter what.”
Now admittedly that sounded a little creepy, but Roland was happy he’d still have another chance with Hayden. Another time to actually love him back.
They sway for a little longer until Hayden’s face becomes noticeably red and Roland feels him sweating through his gloves.
“Can we go to the bathroom?” Hayden quickly asks, Roland nods leading him to a bathroom nearby. Roland locks the door and braces himself for whatever he has to do to help Hayden. He turns around to see Hayden bent over the toilet bowl looking like he’s about to puke. Roland winces as he hears whatever Hayden ate coming back up and hitting the toilet water. He walks over to kneel beside him and starts brushing his hand on his back.
14 - Bad Trip
Hayden isn’t paying attention to what’s really on the TV, and he’s not really paying attention to Roland either. He’s busy dozing off until the appearance of Roland in front of him scares him awake.
“Do you like sharks?” Roland asks, Hayden looks him in the eyes, his scleras are light pink now, meaning he’s slowly coming off being high. Having a slight disagreement with him shouldn’t be such a hazard now.
“They're okay.”
Roland grunts, he looks at the TV, and Hayden looks up at it and realizes it’s playing a sea life documentary, right now it’s specifically talking about sharks.
“I like sharks,” Roland says, he goes over to the couch and climbs onto Hayden, he’s still looking at the TV. “I love sharks, I love…”
“Sharks?” Hayden tries to finish the sentence for him.
Roland lays down on Hayden’s chest, he stays silent for a moment or two. “Yeah.”
“Why did you come over here?” Hayden asks.
“The drawers were staring at me.” He responds, Hayden nods, having his suspicions affirmed.
Hayden starts combing through Roland’s hair as he watches the documentary, getting a little disappointed once they're done talking about sharks.
“Are there any other sea creatures you like?”
“Nope, just sharks.”
“Hmm, I like seahorses, I think they look silly.”
“Don’t the guys get pregnant in that species?”
“I think so.”
Roland shifts his head to look at Hayden. “I’m sorry I got mad at you.”
“It’s okay, you were pretty high.”
Roland frowns at him. “That’s not an excuse Hayden! That’s never an excuse!”
Hayden gets him to calm back down. “Alright, okay.” He tries to change the subject. “Earlier you said something about me reminding you of your ex.”
“Yeah… that’s kinda what was happening at the party. A girl told me that there’s a denial phase after an assault. I thought I had already gotten out of it before Lilian’s party, but I guess I didn’t.”
“Oh, Roland, we didn’t have to go to that party if you didn’t feel like it.”
“But I didn’t want to ruin it for you, and deep down I wanted to go too.”
“Still-”
Roland cuts him off. “Listen, I wanted to go to that party! I wanted to be in that mansion! And I wanted to be your date!” He sniffs. “Stuff like that happens every other day to you, I’m not going to give up on a chance to party at a mansion because my ex is making me moody.”
Hayden continues to comb Roland’s hair. “I wanted to be your date too, I wouldn’t have chosen anyone else if you weren’t feeling like it that night,” He looks him in the eyes. “And I’m sorry for getting drunk in front of you.”
Rolan looks away from him. “Is it bad that I’m about to sound like a hypocrite?”
Hayden laughs.
“I’m being serious,” He continues. “You only had one glass and your body just decided to screw you over.”
“Well, that’s why both of us have agreed that I should wait until I’m 21.”
Hayden sees Roland doze off and snap awake a few times. “Do you want to have a nap now?”
“No, I want food.” He mumbles.
Hayden chuckles. “Alright,” He shifts Roland off of him so that he can reach his phone. “Does pizza sound good?”
“Anything sounds good.”
15 - Party
“I’m sorry,” Hayden heaved. “I didn’t mean to get this drunk.” He then hurls up more food. Roland combs back Hayden’s bangs as he keeps throwing up. At this point, it’s just water and spit coming out of Hayden’s mouth.
Hayden finally gets a few breaths in before weakly reaching up to the top of the toilet’s tank to hit the flush button. He then looks over all teary-eyed at Roland. “Are you mad at me?” He asks.
“Why would I be mad at you?”
“You, you said if I puked you’d be pissed.”
“Well, that was more for if you got sick in my truck,” Roland takes a tissue from the bathroom counter and wipes off Hayden’s mouth. “You didn’t sneak another few glasses past me did you?”
Hayden shakes his head, he then gets dizzy and grips back onto the toilet seat.
“Careful!” Roland shouts. “I think your body just didn’t take it well.” He puts his hand under Hayden’s chin to get him to face him. “Next time let’s wait until you’re 21 to have alcohol.”
Hayden softly nods, he gently pulls Roland’s hand from his chin and places it on his cheek. Roland sits there with him as Hayden closes his eyes, staying silent, almost as if he’s savouring the moment. He then opens his eyes and looks into Roland’s.
“I want to go home.” He whispers.
“Ok.” Roland gets him off the ground and leads him out of the house. As they go through the main area Hayden winces and covers his ears from all the noise. Getting in the truck Hayden avoids making eye contact with Roland, something tells him that both he and Hayden are going to pretend this date never happened.
16 - Bad Trip
“This is the best pizza I’ve ever had. Is it authentic or something?” Roland asks as he shoves another slice down his throat.
“This is Dominos, you’re just still a little high.”
“Ah jeez, I’m gonna have horrible heartburn later.”
Hayden laughs. “I’ve got stuff for that if you need it,” He comes up to Roland. “What do you think about staying the night? We could watch a movie together in bed.”
Roland blushes. “That sounds nice, but I don’t have anything to wear to bed.”
“I wouldn’t mind seeing you in the morning with nothing but underwear on.”
Roland scoffs. “Of course, you wouldn’t, fine, I’ll stay.”
“Great! Do you wanna watch a certain movie?”
“Yeah, a Hallmark movie.”
Hayden is taken aback. “Like, the Christmas ones.”
“Yeah, I hear they’re stupid funny.”
“Hah, yeah, they sure are cheesy.”
17 - Party
Roland settles Hayden onto his bed once getting him into his apartment, he grabs a glass out of Hayden’s cupboards and fills it with water. He sits with Hayden on the bed and makes him drink down the glass. Hayden clings onto him after finishing the glass of water, he holds him from the back, and Roland can feel Hayden’s forehead on his neck. “You should stay for the night,” Hayden mumbles.
“There’s not much of a place for me to stay,” Roland tells him.
Hayden groans getting off the bed. “So you’re leaving then?”
Roland nods.
“Then at least take the flowers I got for you home.” Hayden stumbles into another room before coming out with a little bouquet of blue flowers. Roland thinks they’re pretty until Hayden gets closer, only then does he realize what kind of flower that bouquet is made out of.
Hayden smiles. “They’re forget-me-nots because I never want you to forget about me.”
Tears start welling in Roland’s eyes as he inches away from Hayden.
“You can’t ignore me forever.” Trevor’s voice echoes in Roland’s mind.
“Do you not like them?” Hayden asks with worry in his voice.
“Get, get them away from me!” Roland yells.
“But there for you.”
“I don’t want them!” Roland cries.
Hayden puts the flowers aside and sits back down with Roland. “I love you.” He tells him again.
Roland looks away from him, he can’t take it anymore, and he starts getting up and walking to the door.
“Roland come back!” Hayden calls out to him.
Roland doesn’t even turn around to look at him one last time, he just opens the door, hearing Hayden call out to him for the last time before he closes the door behind him.
“I love you, Roland!”
18 - Roland
The movie ends in the predictable way all the movies do, they say ‘Merry Christmas’, they kiss, and the movie ends.
“Wow, it ended just like we predicted,” Roland says sarcastically while nudging Hayden, no response. Roland looks over to see Hayden sleeping on his shoulder, Roland watches as Hayden’s unconscious body slowly goes forward, falling into Roland’s lap. Roland huffs, there’s no chance to sneak away into the guest bedroom anymore, he’s trapped.
So he shifts himself downward into the covers. Looking at Hayden’s sleeping face he thinks up the idea of waking himself up early and leaving before Hayden wakes up. He pulls Hayden close and kisses him on the forehead.
“I love you too.”

Next Part
1 - Party
Tonight was pretty bad all things considered, Roland had thought that the moment of body dysmorphia and the talk he had with Hayden would be the last time he’d ever think about Trevor. He was wrong, for the last few days his mind had kept playing out the moment of the assault. Tonight was no different, even as he got out of his truck, went into the apartment, and rang on Hayden’s doorbell Trevor still lingered in his mind. The door cracks open and Hayden smiles at him, he seems to have his dress pants and a t-shirt on.
“Sorry, I’m only halfway dressed, you can come in and sit down,” Hayden tells him.
“I can wait in the truck.”
Hayden frowns for a moment and then laughs. “Oh Roland, you’ve probably been driving for four hours, come and sit down.” Hayden ushers Roland into the small apartment.
“It’s kind of cramped in here.” Roland notices.
Hayden nods. “Yeah, I’ve got the money to buy a bigger apartment, I just think I’d feel lonely in a bigger space.”
“Maybe you should think about buying a space that fits two people.”
Hayden playfully jaw drops, he then winks at Roland. “Maybe I should.”
Roland sits down on Hayden’s bed, taking in Hayden’s scent, something he didn’t really know Hayden had.
“Hope you don’t mind the show,” Hayden says as he takes off his shirt to put on a dress shirt. “Are you wearing any cologne tonight?” He asks, taking a little fancy bottle of liquid out from his dresser.
“I’ve never worn cologne, only deodorant.”
Hayden passes him another small bottle. “Think you’d do well with this one.”
Roland looks at it, it’s a cedar musk, he puts a little on his wrist and smells it, it’s just strong enough for him to not smell like an old lady. As he rubs the cologne in, Hayden comes over to sit beside him.
He tilts his head away from Roland, exposing his neck. “Wanna see what I smell like?”
2 - Bad Trip
Hayden anxiously wipes down the counters in his new apartment he had gotten a week ago. He had taken Roland’s advice to get a bigger apartment, but now it almost felt like he had empty nest syndrome even if he never had kids and didn’t want to have any. Roland comes over today, he hasn’t seen him in a month, and he only started talking to him again last week. Hayden is even surprised Roland is talking to him again, he doesn’t think anyone would want to talk to him after seeing him make a fool of himself. The party was awful, looking back on it now Hayden could tell something was the matter with Roland, he had just wished they could’ve stayed home and figured that out.
Hayden hears the doorbell ring, he sprints over to it to let in Roland.
“Hi.” He smiles.
“Hi.” Roland smiles back with a closed mouth.
Hayden closes the door behind Roland as he looks around. “This place looks really nice,” Roland tells him.
“Yeah, I took your advice and got a place meant for two people.”
Roland’s smile drops a little, “Oh, then are you seeing someone?”
“No, I really wish I was, it’s really lonely here.”
“Oh, well I hope you find someone soon.”
Hayden sighs. “Yeah, me too.” It seems like Roland is too oblivious that he’s the one Hayden wants, that, or he’s trying to let Hayden down gently.
“Can I have a tour?” Roland asks, snapping Hayden out of his own thoughts.
“Yeah sure, why not.”
Hayden brings Roland around the apartment showing him the downstairs bathroom, the upstairs bathroom, the guest and master bedroom, the kitchen and the living room. All of the rooms are somewhat decorated, though the place doesn’t seem so lived in yet.
“I see what you mean,” Roland laughs. “You could fit a family of three in here.”
“Yeah, I don’t really think I’ll ever have kids.”
“Me neither, I don’t think any Awol, Recall, or Rewind would want to either. I’m not even sure if Rewinds can even reproduce.”
“I’d be worried they’d look like incest babies or something straight from Dah Zey.”
“Oh god, that would be awful.”
3 - Party
Roland turns his head away from Hayden. “No thanks” He feels his head being turned back towards a concerned Hayden.
“Are you nervous?” Hayden asks, he brushes the piece of hair in Roland’s face behind his ear. “Don’t worry, I can do all the talking tonight if you’d like.” He assures him. Roland has to hold back tears, he really doesn’t want to ruin the party for him. “That would be nice.” He sniffs.
Hayden smiles. “I think you’d like Grace, and I think she’d like you too, she’s a lot like your sister. Though I’m sure Lilian doesn’t think of filling the home with sad clown paintings.”
Roland gives him a weird look, and Hayden continues. “Don’t worry she hasn’t actually done that to her house, yet.”
Hayden pulls out his phone. “I should call us a cab tonight.”
Roland puts a hand on Hayden’s shoulder. “No, I can drive us there and back.” He tells him.
“Roland… there’s alcohol there.”
“I know, I don’t drink.”
“Really? I thought you’d be all over that.”
Roland shrugs.
“You don’t mind if I get a little tipsy then do you?” Hayden asks.
“Aren’t you not old enough to do that?”
Hayden laughs. “I’ve already done a whole bunch of edibles in my teenage years, I think we’re past being concerned about what goes into my body.”
“Fine, but if you throw up I’m gonna be pissed.”
“Oh, I won’t get that tipsy, I promise.”
Hayden ties his tie and puts on a black jacket and gloves “How do I look?” He asks Roland.
“Either like a con artist or a spy, I think it’s the gloves.” Roland points out.
“Oh, guess I’ll steal your heart, or maybe I’ll sweep you off your feet.” He flirts, and now that actually gets Roland to laugh.
“Should we head out now?” Roland asks with a smile.
“Sure.”
4 - Bad Trip
Hayden looks Roland in the eyes. “Hey umm, about Grace’s party.”
Roland sighs. “Yeah, I’ll be honest, it wasn’t the worst thing in the world.”
“It wasn’t?”
“No, but it was still terrible.”
Hayden nods.
“Sorry, I kept giving you the cold shoulder, I… I was going through something.”
“It’s alright,” Hayden smiles. “We can start over on square one.”
Roland smirks. “If we started back on square one, I’d think you were annoying, I’d be losing my mind over Connor and Mai, and we’d be stuck in an antique shop basement.”
Hayden laughs. “Maybe square five then?”
“Square five,” Roland affirms.
“So what do you want to do?” Hayden asks as he watches Roland fiddle his thumbs together.
“I’m used to bringing out board games whenever someone comes over, do you have any of those?”
Hayden shakes his head. “No, the only thing I’ve got like that is plastic toy keys for Mason.”
“Sorry, what? Mason?”
“Oh yeah, that’s Bam’s kid, she’s from the graveyard but I don’t think you ever met her, er um, Roland ever met her.”
Hayden pulls out his phone and cycles through pictures to find the one he took of Mason sleeping on Bam's chest. “There.”
“Oh, he’s cute.”
“Yeah, I told Bam she looks like the dad who said they did want a pet.”
Roland smiles. “She does.”
“Yeah, she told me sometimes she teases Mason for giving her Baby Fever.”
Roland changes the subject a tad bit. “I think Nero was talking to a girl like that the other day, she was calling her Bambi.”
“Yeah, that’s Bam’s full name. I’m guessing Bam knows Nero has half of Starkey’s face.”
“I wouldn’t know, I just caught her cooing at her phone the other day and asked why she was doing that.”
“Well, next time you hear her talking to Bam you should ask Bam why she lets Nero call her Bambi, ‘cause she doesn’t let anyone do that.”
“Will do.”
5 - Party
At sun down they arrive at a beautiful Floridian mansion decked out in pink with a red-tiled roof. Hayden bends himself forward from the passenger seat to announce them on the intercom. After a moment the wrought-iron gate swings open allowing them to pass through. Roland parks and gets out of the truck, mesmerized by the scenery. He walks over to the pink azalea hedges, just as he reaches them he’s spooked by the sound of someone calling out for him. He looks over to see Hayden standing away from the truck next to a butler.
“I’m just looking around.” He explains himself.
Hayden gently waves away the butler before coming up to Roland. “It’s going to be fine in there Roland.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you avoiding going in?”
“I’m not, I just want to look around.”
Hayden looks around with him. “I mean, it’s nothing special, it’s honestly kinda tacky.”
Roland frowns. “Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t grow up with rich tastes like you!”
Hayden is taken aback. “Wha-”
“Hayden, this place looks like a real-life Barbie Dream House! But, y’know, maybe that’s why you find it tacky.” His voice slows into a mutter as if he’s trying to backtrack from snapping at him.
“I… never saw it that way.” Hayden pauses. “Wait, how do you even know what a Barbie Dream House is?”
“I have a little sister, Hayden.”
Hayden scoffs at himself. “Oh, of course.”
Roland looks back at the bushes. “There’s a lot of pretty flowers out here.”
Hayden stares at Roland, then he looks at the flowers. “I think you’re prettier.” He says under his breath.
“What?”
“Nothing! I just remembered I had flowers for you at home.” A great save on Hayden’s part, mostly because he did have a bouquet at home for Roland.
Roland smiles. “Oh, that’s nice!”
Hayden holds his hand out for Roland to take. “Can we go inside now?”
Roland takes his hand. “Alright, if you insist.”
The mansion is filled with marble furnishings and designer seating, and the walls are covered in abstract art, it’s absolutely extravagant.
“This place is beautiful,” Roland says in a state of awe.
“I think it looks like a model home from a magazine,” Hayden comments. “Though, this place probably looks like the American dream to you.”
6 - Bad Trip
Hayden looks towards the kitchen. “So I’ve got some snacks if you want any.”
“Oh thank god I’m starving.”
Hayden laughs as he and Roland go into the kitchen.
“So are we cooking anything?” Roland asks.
“No, unless you want me to watch you cook while hugging you from behind.” Hayden teases, he grabs onto Roland’s back and as soon as he does Rolan lets out a pained wheeze.
Hayden backs away from Roland, putting his hands over his mouth. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry.”
Roland takes a deep breath. “It’s okay, I’m just taking a break from my meds for a while.”
“Doesn’t it hurt?”
“A little, but don’t beat yourself up over it, you didn’t do anything wrong.”
“But-”
Roland’s voice becomes firm. “It’s fine, Hayden.”
Hayden still feels guilty as Roland rummages through the fridge for something to eat. “What’s with the brownies?" Roland asks.
Hayden peers inside the fridge. “Those are edibles.”
“Oh.”
“Have you ever had one before?”
“No.”
“Do you want to?”
Roland looks up at Hayden, going over his options before he says anything. “If I do, will you stay sober?”
“If that’s what you want.”
“Then I’ll try a piece.”
Hayden gets Roland to sit on the couch as he cuts a sliver off of one of the brownies. He comes over with the piece of brownie and gives it to Roland. He takes the piece and puts it in his mouth, chews it, and swallows it, he then stares at Hayden.
“It’ll take a while to kick in,” Hayden tells him.
For now, they just stare at each other. Hayden looks at Roland’s face, whoever put him back together did a good job. The only noticeable thing about it is that the corners of his mouth are slightly open. He then looks up at his hair, his beautiful dark brown hair that now reaches his shoulders.
Roland smiles at him. “Whatcha lookin’ at?”
“Your hair.”
“Everyone at work says I should cut it.”
“Please don’t!”
Roland laughs. “Relax, I like it this length.”
Hayden gets closer to him. “Can I feel it?”
“What?”
“Your hair.”
Roland takes an awkward tone of voice “Okay...”
Hayden softly combs his hand through Roland’s hair. “It’s so soft.” He feels Roland pass his hand through his bangs. “Your hair is soft too.”
“Yours is softer.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Hayden sits back down on the couch. “So what have you been up to?”
“Oh, well I work a lot for the emergency services, it’s usually picking up people from places they shouldn’t be.”
“I’m guessing from places that are off-grid too?”
“Yeah, that and mountains and stuff.”
7 - Party
“Heh, I don’t think I’d want this big of a house. So, is the woman who owns this house really like my sister?” Roland teases.
Hayden rolls his eyes. “Would you believe me that she lives in the guest house and that this place is only for parties?”
“Maybe.”
Someone around Roland’s age comes up to them, she’s got a puffy dress reminiscent of a holiday doll.
“Looks like someone came out of the radio again.” She smiles.
“Nice to see you too Grace,” Hayden points to Roland. “I brought a date like you asked.”
“H-hi,” Roland shyly waves his hand.
“Oh, so did the radio boy grab you from the radio too, or maybe the TV..?”
Roland laughs. “The BioBuilder actually.”
Grace nods. “I’ve finally seen one of ‘em creations from that machine, count me impressed.”
Roland becomes awkward. “Hah, right.”
“She’s the one who brought the original organ printer to Rifkin Medical Instruments,” Hayden whispers into his ear.
“Oh, umm, thank you for… everything then.”
Grace dismisses him. “You should go thank Sonia and Janson at their memorial, they are the ones who created it. I just rushed the machine out of a burning building.”
“That memorial was built on top of the fire site wasn’t it?” Hayden asks.
“Mhmm, where there was an antique shop, there is now a sculpture of a scientist couple.”
Roland looks at Hayden. “…What?…”
Hayden excuses them for Grace and pulls Roland aside.
“What is she talking about Hayden?”
Hayden sighs. “Do you remember Sonia?” He asks, Roland nods.
“Well, a long while back Connor, Risa, and Grace were at the antique shop. Some parts pirate searching for Connor came in and set the entire place on fire.”
Roland looks down. “Oh.”
“Yeah, everyone got out except for Sonia, I heard she was chained to the chair she sat in.”
Roland looks solemnly at the ground.
“We could visit their memorial after the party,” Hayden suggests.
“I don’t want to.” Roland mumbles.
8 - Bad Trip
There’s a bit of silence before Hayden brings Nero up. “How has Nero been doing? I've always wondered since she has half the face of Starkey.”
“Oh, she’s fine, she moved back in with me a month ago, in between helping Sam with his work she works as a nurse at her old ward.”
“I’m surprised they let her back in there.”
“Well, it’s not like a regular ward, there’s probably a lot of medical stuff going on in there.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
Hayden supposes this is going better than he expected, he thought as soon as he opened the door for Roland he'd start chewing him out of how horrible he was being at the party.
“You look tired,” Roland comments, it was true Hayden spent all last night busy worrying about how today would go.
“Do you want to lay down?” Roland asks him.
Hayden has to do a double-take. “Like, with you?”
“Yeah.”
“Alright.” Hayden tries to wedge himself between the couch and Roland before his body is promptly placed on Roland’s chest.
Hayden starts to blush really hard. “Roland.”
“What?”
“I’m on your chest.”
“Well, I can see that.”
“But why?”
“‘Cause I don’t care if you’re on my chest.”
“But, but, I’m like on you.”
“And? I don’t care. This is like our second date isn’t it?”
“Wow, you’re far bolder when you’re not going through something.”
“When I pulled you onto the dance floor at Lilian's party it should’ve told you that much.”
Hayden nods, he feels Roland comb through his hair again. “You should have a nap,” Roland tells him.
“But I want to be awake when you’re feeling the full effects of that brownie.”
“Hayden, all I’m doing is looking up at a white ceiling, I'll be fine.” Roland gently presses Hayden’s head into his chest as Hayden starts falling asleep.
9 - Party
Hayden holds Roland’s hands. “What’s wrong?”
Roland makes up a half-excuse. “It’s just my first date after y’know… I’m just nervous.”
Hayden kisses Roland’s hand, making him blush. “Everything is gonna be okay, I promise.”
Roland sighs, the moments of, before, and after the assault still playing in his head. ‘It really isn’t, and I don’t know how you can make it better.’
Hayden guides Roland over to the seating area. He looks around the room, there are at least fifty people in here. He looks back at Hayden, and seeing him eye the champagne glass tower he smirks at him.
“Can I restrict you to just one drink tonight?”
Hayden smiles at him. “You can.” He walks over to the tower to receive a glass, and on his way back he takes minimal sips.
Roland looks at him curiously. “How’s it taste?”
“Fancy.”
Hayden shifts closer to Roland, almost too close, he then strokes a finger onto Roland’s vest, stroking a finger was something Trevor used to do.
“You’re really pretty.” He says.
“Thanks, Hayden,” Roland says flatley.
Hayden looks down, almost defeated-looking, instead of taking a sip of the champagne Roland remarks that this time Hayden takes a full gulp.
“Have you eaten anything recently?” Roland asks.
Hayden shakes his head, Roland takes away his glass and sets it aside. “Come get something to eat with me, that stuff can’t be good for you on an empty stomach.” Roland leads Hayden over to a giant buffet table, it’s probably filled with the best the world has to offer.
They sit back down and Roland hands Hayden back the glass. As they eat Roland can’t help but notice a stain on the corner of Hayden's mouth.
“You’ve got something in the corner of your mouth,” Roland says. Hayden grabs the cloth napkin and wipes the other side of his mouth.
“No, not that side.” Roland licks his thumb and wipes away the stain, after realizing what he’s just done he becomes a sputtering mess.
“Anywhere else to clean up? Maybe my lips?” Hayden giggles.
Roland stares him straight in the eyes, his voice goes back to being flat. “Can you never ask that question, like, ever again?”
Hayden recoils a little. “Oh, sorry.” He quietly utters, again, taking a big gulp of his champagne.
Recalled • 57 - Quinceañera
Previous • Series Masterlist
Aight fair warning there might be some bad Spanish in here. (Cause I do not speak that language.)
Roland looks outside the front windows of the hall as he adjusts his shirt collar. He stands there like he’s waiting for someone, yet no one was told to come this early. He looks over to Sam, who stares at all the periwinkle-themed decorations.
“You’re not back there with Nero?” He asks him.
Sam shakes his head, he looks a little sad. “Nero hasn’t said it, but I think she just wants me to leave her alone.”
“I see.”
Roland takes another slow lap around the hall admiring all the decorations. The ombre draped curtains, the flowers, and the beautiful crown moulding on the hall’s walls. He walks into the back room, where his mother, his abuela and Nero are busy getting Lilian ready. Roland looks at his father who stands off to the side. “You’re not helping them?”
His father laughs. “They keep yelling at me whenever I try.”
“Well, you don’t have the feminine touch we women have,” Nero responds.
“Sí, me gusta ella.” His abuela says it’s funny, she perfectly understands English but she can’t speak a lick of it.
Nero looks bewildered. “What did she say?” She asks Mr. Delgado.
“She said she likes you chica.”
“Oh,” Nero reddened with shyness.
Nero pins back Lilian’s hair with a bejewelled clip, she makes sure that the bottoms of her ears aren’t covered leaving room for the earrings her grandmother places in them.
Nero turns to face Lilian. “So, any boyfriends?”
Lilian shakes her head solemnly. “All the boys that like me are weird, and all the boys I like think I look weird.”
“Hmmph, assholes.”
“But I do look weird.”
“Honey nooo…” Nero gets Cindy and Florencia to back away for a moment, she turns Lilian’s chair to one of the mirrors. “Look how pretty you are, you’ve got pretty blue eyes, beautiful long dark brown hair, and when you put on that gorgeous dress you’ll be the prettiest girl here.”
“But my eye, everyone will be talking about that.”
“Psssh, not with Sam and I here, what do you think they’ll be talking about, the Quinceañera’s lazy eye or the two Rewinds with Mason Starkey’s face?”
“I knew that face looked familiar!” Danilo interjected half-hazardly.
“But-,” Lilian continued.
“Hey! If someone mocks your appearance I’ll spill punch on them or something, you're very beautiful, and I need you to see that.”
Lilian nods, and the girls get back to getting her ready. Once done, her mother helps her slip on her dress, and her abuela puts on her gloves and the rest of her jewelry.
“Oh, la dieciochoañera es una princesa tan hermosa!” Her abuela tells her.
“Can the princess give us a spin?” Nero asks Lilian.
Lilian twirls a few times, stopping once she gets dizzy, which is only two to three twirls. The girls cheer her on and Lilian seems to get really happy.
Half an hour later all the guests have arrived, Roland peeks out from the entrance curtains to see if he can spot Hayden. He sees him talking to a befuddled guy with a ponytail and tattoos covering his entire body, weird, who invited that guy?
His mother comes up to him and Roland opens the curtain for her, she heads down to the middle of the hall, getting everyone’s attention.
“Hello everyone, please sit down, we'll be starting in one minute,” She turns around, walking back into the curtains as everyone gets seated. “How’s the speech going Lilian?”
Roland turns around to see Lilian speed-reading a piece of paper. “Good.” She says nervously, she lowers the paper from her view, frantically looking around for a table to put it on.
Roland goes towards her. “Do you want me to hold on to it?”
“Why?”
He shrugs. “Could be good in case you forget a part.”
“And look like an idiot?”
“I’m not saying that,” He gestures at the page. “Hand it over, we don't have much time.” Lilian gives him the page and he neatly folds it and slides it into his coat pocket.
Their mother and father slip out of the curtains making it to the middle of the room. Lilian’s Quinceañera isn’t religious, so there won’t be any padrinos, which means her small Quinceañera court is next to go on, which consists of Roland, one of Lilian’s classmates, their abuela, and their tía. If Roland remembers correctly her name is Alejandra. “See you in like ten seconds.” He tells Lilian as he walks out.
As Roland gets to the middle of the floor he sees Nero open the curtains wide for Lilian, the room is suddenly filled with murmurs of “Oh, she’s so beautiful.” and “Oh que linda.” Lilian turns her head down hiding a big smile as she walks towards the middle. Last to come out is her Chamberlain, it’s another guy from her class who is wheelchair-bound, Nero follows behind him, making sure he’s able to keep a steady pace as he rolls. Once he’s in the middle Nero hides herself in the court.
The guests are instructed to stand up as Lilian is handed a microphone to begin her toast.
“Hi everyone, thank you for coming,” She starts. “I’m really glad you all came, and I hope you enjoy this party. I never would’ve expected this to happen, and…” Roland starts to notice Lilian is hyperventilating, she starts to go into a cold sweat. “I hate this.” she spits out. Roland and their father rush to her side, Roland takes the microphone from Lilian and hands it to their father, he in turn exchanges it for his pocket-handkerchief. Roland blots away at Lilian’s sweat and tears. “What’s wrong?” He asks her.
“I forgot my lines.”
Roland pulls the paper out of his pocket and hands it to her. “I guess we were better safe than sorry.”
“And I sound like a mouse.”
“Yeah, a pretty one.”
Lilian laughs. “I hate you.”
Lilian unfolds the paper as Roland hands her back the microphone. “Pretend you're just talking to me okay.” Lilian nods as she clears her throat. “I never would’ve expected this to happen, and I’m very thankful to my family for putting this together. This year I really wanted a dress for my birthday, and I guess I got the dress and a whole lot more. I’m also really happy that this year I was able to meet my real father. He’s really nice and ten times better than the father I had for most of my life. I know I’ve still got so much more to live, but I’m at least grateful that my eighteenth birthday is a happy one.” She nods to Roland, indicating her toast is over.
Roland hands over the microphone to his abuela and tía Alejandra.
“Hola a todos, muchas gracias por venir.” His abuela starts.
“Hello everyone, thank you so much for coming.” His tía echoes in English.
“Estoy muy feliz de que todos hayan venido a la Quinceañera de mi nieta.”
“I am so happy you all came to my granddaughter’s Quinceañera.”
“Cuando era pequeña, las quinceañeras todavía se estaban integrando en la cultura española, así que fue realmente una sorpresa cuando tuve la oportunidad de tener una.”
“When I was little, Quinceañeras were still being integrated into Spaniard culture, so it was really a surprise when I got to have one myself.”
“Cuando mi hija tuvo su Quinceañera, me aseguré de que fuera la mejor fiesta de su vida, eso es exactamente lo que quería regalarle a mi nieta también.”
“When my daughter had her Quinceañera, I made sure it was the best party of her life, that’s exactly what I wanted to give my granddaughter as well.”
“Y continuaré asegurándome de que todas mis nietas tengan excelentes Quinceañeras.”
“And I will continue to make sure all my granddaughters have excellent Quinceañeras.”
“Ahora vamos a cenar.”
“Now, let’s have dinner.”
Lilian’s family is served first before the DJ calls out certain tables to head up to the buffet. While Roland is eating his abuela starts talking to him. “Rolando, ¿por qué no vinieron tus abuelos con nosotros?”
“Hmm, grandparents? No, my grandmother isn’t here, we made sure not to invite her.”
“Ah, pero ellos,” His abuela points over to Otto and Martha.
Roland shakes his head, laughing. “No, no, those are our neighbours, I do wish they were our grandparents though, they’re far nicer people.”
Roland excuses himself from the table to alleviate himself, once he gets out of the bathroom he sees the guy covered in tattoos leaning against the wall. Roland goes over to him. “Who are you?” He asks.
“Hayden’s plus one,” Lev answers. “I’m surprised you don’t recognize me, almost…” Lev suddenly has a moment of realization. “Oh, you were unwound the entire time, sorry.”
“It’s fine.”
Lev holds out his hand. “I’m Lev Tashi’ne, the clapper who didn’t clap.”
Roland nods his head absentmindedly.
“You still don’t know me.”
Roland shakes his head, affirming Lev’s suspicions.
“I’m glad actually, unlike Hayden I don’t like being seen as a micro-celebrity,” He pauses. “Sorry for being here, Hayden had me thinking this was Connor-related, and now I’m here at some girl’s birthday party.”
“No, you’re not a burden,” Roland reassures him. “And, at least Hayden isn’t so alienated now.”
“Hah, guess he and I have that in common, we don’t know anyone here,” Lev’s face straightened. “Though I think I remember you from the graveyard.”
“You remember Roland, not me, I’m Modified.”
Lev nods. “When I went to Cleaver to become a clapper I had asked about Roland, he said Roland wasn’t the right material to be a clapper.”
Roland blinks. “Of course, I’m not a coward.”
Lev gives him a disgusted look. “A coward?! Roland clapping is self-immolation!”
Self-immolation, Roland had heard those words before. He believes it was his English professor, who was also the psychology professor who had brought it up whilst they were reading a book. He had described it as a form of protest or an act of martyrdom, because someone was literally lighting themselves on fire it was considered one of the most extreme methods of protest.
“Well, firstly self-immolation is setting yourself on fire, not blowing up. Pretty sure people who commit self-immolation also believe the world will get its shit together because of their protests. Clappers hate the world, they want it destroyed, no ifs, ands, or buts.”
Lev tries to say something, but he stops himself because Roland is right.
“Hey, be mad at me all you want, but you’ll have to get in line behind Connor and Risa.”
After supper Lilian’s father slips her from flats into heels, he makes sure she’s stable before guiding her onto the dance floor for a father-and-daughter dance. “Are you nervous?” He asks her.
“A little.”
“Well, don’t be, I’m right here.”
Danilo and Lilian dance alone on the dancefloor, Roland watches as their father asks Lilian a question, she accepts it, and their father lifts her up into the air he spins her around before setting her back down. The crowd cheers and they soon join them on the dance floor, Roland goes to sit in the corner not really wanting to dance until he has to. Out of the corner of his eye, he spots Nero walking up to Hayden, who looks horrified at the sight of her. The way Nero had half her hair dyed red and permed in curls made everyone instantly recognize whose face she had.
“Sorry, he came back from the dead.” She starts.
“I’m more scared that he came back as a sexy woman.”
“Ay, woah, cool it! I’m not into men.”
“I’m not into you either, I’m just stating the facts.”
“Hmm, thanks, but I didn’t come for flattery, I came to give you closure.”
“Me?”
“Yes, you, listen, the way you look at me tells me a lot, you’ve been hurt by Mason. I just want you to know that you can rest easy. All I have is his skin, everything else is probably buried deeper than the respected dead. He’s gone, and he’s never coming back.”
Hayden nods. “That’s very nice of you to say, but I don’t think I should be the one hearing it.”
Nero furrows her brow as Hayden grabs a napkin from a nearby table and writes down a phone number and a name, he hands her the napkin. “That’s who needs closure, she’s busy dealing with the aftermath of Starkey’s harem.”
Nero goes wide-eyed. “He had a harem?”
Hayden nods. “Thankfully only one of three girls he had sex with actually produced a kid, and then she died in childbirth.”
Nero winces, “Yikes.”
“Yeah, Bam didn’t trust those two other girls with the baby, so she left them and took the baby with her.”
“What a noble woman.”
“Yeah, one of the only nice storks in Stork Brigade.”
Hayden leaves Nero alone with the number of a stork girl named Bambi.
Lilian didn’t have a surprise dance after the waltz, but then that meant that after the waltz Roland and members of the court would have to invite someone onto the dancefloor. As the waltz ends and before Roland can even get up Hayden comes rushing over to him.
“Are you okay?” He asks.
“I want to dance with you,” Hayden confesses.
“You, you want to be chosen by a court member?”
“Well, not just any court member.” He mumbles.
Roland gets up, “Alright, come dance with me.” Roland grabs his arm and leads him to the dance floor. They’re mostly covered on all sides by people, making the moment feel more intimate than it already is.
Hayden looks into Roland’s eyes. “Your eyes look like watercolours.”
“Huh?”
“Like the way the pigments are injected, I’ve never seen anything like it. When did you get them done?”
Roland is taken aback. “Hayden, they’ve been like this since before I was unwound.”
“Oh,” Hayden looks down, becoming a little sheepish. “I guess I never noticed.”
Hayden eventually looks back up into Roland’s eyes, and Roland becomes redder with every moment.
“Are you blushing?” Hayden asks him.
“Yes Captain Obvious, because someone is staring right into my soul.”
Hayden laughs. “Y’know someone from the graveyard once told me that, to have a soul, you had to be loved.”
“Oh, I’m feeling very loved right now,” Roland says sarcastically.
“Well prepare to be loved even more, ‘cause little ole me fucked over your ex’s chance of getting a good job!”
Roland’s entire world stops, and he backs away from Hayden. “You did what?”
Hayden panics. “I was going through public records and I found that a guy around your age named Trevor had to replace his testes. Research got the best of me and I found he went to your school and that multiple agencies were ready to pick him up. I just had to do something about it.”
“Hayden…”
Hayden pulls Roland's hands towards him. “This isn’t just about you! It’s about all the other people he could hurt in the future. You’d want people safe from him wouldn’t you?”
Roland nods, still letting Hayden hold onto his hands.
Hayden holds his hands close to his chest. “Listen, I feel bad that you invited me all the way out here and I didn’t bring anything. So umm, there’s kind of a ticket to a party I haven’t cashed out yet and… I’d be okay if you were my plus one.”
Roland smiles. “Are you asking me out on a date Mr. Upchurch?”
Hayden flushes red. “N-no what makes you say that? Do you want to go out on a date with me?”
Roland laughs. “You know what? Maybe I would,” He brings his hands back into Hayden’s vision. “I asked because you’re also still holding my hands and being awkward.”
Hayden tries to pull away, but Roland tightens his grip around his hands whilst giggling.
Hayden bashfully tucks his chin into his neck, looking down like an embarrassed toddler. “You’ve got very pretty eyes, Roland.” He mumbles.
Roland hums, “I know, I’ve been told.”
An hour before the end of the ceremony Lilian cuts the cake with her group, and then they are left to join back in on the ceremony as her mother, abuela and tía set the cake down at each table. Roland goes over to Nero as she eats her slice. He supposes the entire party he wasn’t paying any attention to what she was wearing because it’s truly a shock when he looks at her. She wears a long shimmering light coral dress, the side of it has a slit so far up you can see where Roland’s old leg and the BioBuilder torso meet, there’s also plenty of inner boob.
“Can you not stare at me like that?” She asks shyly.
“Sorry,” He averts his gaze. “It’s a very pretty dress.”
“I know, I’ve been ogled many times.”
Roland sits down with her.
“When does this party end?” She asks.
“Well, Lilian just cut the cake, so around another hour.”
“Hmmph!”
“You haven’t even said a word to Sam tonight, have you?”
Nero sniffs. “Talking to him will just make me cry, I don’t want your sister or anyone to see me cry.”
Roland nods. “I hear you went back to school again, why?”
Nero sighs. “I went to the flight academy to escape war, but it just brought me right back to it. So I’m taking courses in business so I can help Sam or something.”
“That’s nice of you.”
“Yeah, yeah shut up.”
The party is close to ending as Lilian has her last dances, one with her father, one with her mother, and one with someone special in her life. Roland wonders who that will be, but it doesn’t take long for him to find out. As Lilian ends her dance with her mother she looks around for someone.
“Roland?” She calls out.
Roland looks up and raises his hand. “I’m over here!” He shouts, he gets out of the seat next to Nero and runs over to her.
“You wanted to dance with me?” He asks.
Lilian nods, as they hold each other and sway Roland realizes something.
“You’re crying.” Lilian notices.
“It’s just, you’re all grown up now.” He sniffs.
“You sound like a dad.”
“I did parent you, didn’t I?”
“Yeah, but I’m not that old yet, it’s still the beginning of my life.”
“Yeah, it is.”

Roland drives Nero to a site filled with parked cars. It seems like there’s already a lot of people here ready to claim their viewing spots. Roland looks to Nero before he gets out; he hasn't physically been near her in some time. The blonde part of her hair had mostly grown out, leaving it brown and curly. Nero catches Roland’s gaze.
“It clashes doesn’t it?” She asks.
Roland looks at the darker skin at the back of Nero’s neck that covers her scalp. He nods, it does clash.
“I’m going to get it permed and dyed in time for your sister’s birthday. Oh, by the way,” She punches the side of Roland’s arm. “Happy belated birthday asshole, can’t believe I wasn’t invited.”
Roland laughs. “Nobody was, I just bought a little cake and ate it all by myself.”
“All in one day?”
Roland hesitates. “Over the course of a couple of hours, it was small Nero!”
Nero rolls her eyes, smirking. “And you wonder why you’re chubby.”
“Well I work it off don't I?” He jeers.
“Yeah, yeah, I know I’m just teasing you.”
Nero nestles her Pilot's cap on her head. With her black and gray camo fatigues, she almost looks like a medaled officer.
Roland gets out of the truck, following Nero. “So have you been at war?” He asks her, worried.
She stops, shaking her head, she turns around to look at Roland. “I thought so, but all Team Mosaic has been asked to do so far is deliver provisions to Australia. So I was in charge of air delivery.”
“They’re still at war?”
“I think it’s ending soon.”
They walk further to the field.
“So, are you doing anything today?” Nero asks him.
“Think we’re doing a speed competition at the beginning of the show. Just seeing how fast we can get a person into the helicopter and to the finish line.”
“Well, I hope you win.”
“Damn right, I will! So what about you?”
“I’m just gonna be swerving all over the place, pretty sure my plane will be letting off purple smoke.”
“Cool.”
Nero starts to walk off towards more fighter pilots. “I have to go find my jet, I’ll see you towards the end of the show.” She salutes him with two fingers before running off.
As she leaves his field of view a few people with red armbands come up to him. “You’re McMary-Delgado right?” One of them asks.
Roland nods, he’s handed a red armband for himself. “We’re going over to the middle of the field, we have to do some preparations.” They explain.
Roland follows them into the field and he starts helping others put together the dummies they’ll be putting on the gurneys. “So, is this therapeutic for you?” Someone on the green team asks Roland. “Y’know since you’re a Recall. Uh sorry, maybe not, I-”
“I wouldn’t say it’s therapeutic, but I do like putting things together, so…” Roland answers them.
Roland drags his dummy out in front of the gurney, he then stands with the others. There’s a middle-aged woman in his group that nudges him. “So, you’re my co-pilot?”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Hmm, got some pretty good people out here today, hah! but I’ve been doing this for years. We’ve totally got this in the bag.”
“You think so?” Roland asks, doubting her for a moment.
“Hey! The key is to think you’ll win, then you won’t stress about it, and then you’ll actually succeed.”
Roland nods, the woman talks again. “I’m not sure how they taught you, but we’re going in that tunnel before the gurney goes in. So you better be in there quick!”
He nods again, he turns towards the noise of an intercom just starting up.
“Welcome everyone to the spring Air Show! Of course, let’s start off with a thanks to our airport sponsors, we’ve got the Madison Municipal Airport, Anderson Muni Airport-Aid, and let’s not forget about Hoosier Aviation, big thanks to them for bringing in aircrafts today. Now, we’ll be starting today’s show with an agility competition between multiple emergency response teams. These people have never met each other, so we’re also putting their communication skills to the test. Now, on your marks, get set, go!”
An air horn is blown as Roland and his team quickly get the dummy strapped in. He and the woman get in their seats as the gurney and the others get secured.
“Now, this is the easy part.” The woman says under her breath. She and Roland get the chopper into the air and fly it to the finish line, landing just a few feet away from it.
“High-five kid!” The woman raises her hand, and Roland taps it. He watches as a few of the other choppers fly down further than theirs.
One of his other teammates walks up to the front. “Looks like purple is getting disqualified.” They comment.
“Yeah, definitely landed too far out.” The woman acknowledges.
Roland and his teammates exit out of the chopper the normal way this time. Once they get to the side of the field, they’re awarded with badges.
“What are these for?”
“They’re for bombers duh.” One of his teammates replies.
Roland furrows his eyebrows. “Bombers?”
“Like bomber jackets, they're like the Girl Scout bucket hat for Aviation.”
“Oh, I don’t have one.”
“They’re selling them over at the vendor in the black tent over there, I hear they’ve even got an embroidery service.”
Roland walks over to the black tent, he looks at the selection of bombers left. He picks out two large black ones, one for him, and one he’ll gift to Nero. He goes up to the main table at the stall.
“Will you be getting these embroidered?” The lady at the table asks him.
“Umm, maybe one of them, sorry my last name is kinda long.”
“Hah! I bet you it's not as long as some of the Chance Folk names I’ve had to embroider.” An older woman says in the back.
The lady at the front smiles at him. “So?”
“Sure, I’ll get both of them embroidered.”
Roland sits in the back with the older woman as she rapidly embroiders the bombers. “So, is Taggart here today?” She asks.
“Yes, her jet is going to be letting off purple smoke later today.”
“Oh Taggart is a girl, is this a present for a lucky lady then?”
Roland waves his hands in a panic. “No no, no, we’re not dating, she’s more like a big sister to me.”
“I see. Just a friend then?”
“Yeah, she’s done a lot for me, I want to give her something back.”
“Well, this will be a pretty priceless gift.”
A little later she hands over Nero’s bomber to him. “I see you got some badges there, do you want me to stitch them on the front of yours?”
“Sure, that would be great.” He hands over the badges.
Roland walks up to the front of the tent, he’s got a good view of the field from here. He can see from afar that fighter jets are being loaded up with colours. Nero must be going on soon. He sees a figure in black take off their hat and clip it to a body harness. They then put on a thick helmet and climb into the jet by opening the windshield.
Nero secures herself in her seat, she sits to the left in the middle. There’s a person to her right, a person in front of her and someone in the back. The front and back person guides the plane, while she and the person to her right are in charge of setting off the powder. Nero hears the intercom go off before hearing the air horn. Slowly like clockwork, all the jets start moving forward and off the ground. The jet curves into 90 degrees up from its ground placement, Nero feels the pressure against her as they go towards the clouds.
“We’re letting off the powder now!” The pilot in the front yells.
Nero pulls the lever usually meant for letting off homing missiles, she then grips to the seat as the jet takes an incredibly sharp loop. The jet does a few zigzags before it starts twirling in the air. Nero knows this looks cool from the outside, but it’s equally interesting from her seat. Knowing the jet is constantly rotating from upside down to right side up, and she doesn’t even feel nauseous. Nero watches as the powder lines of purple, green, red, and white come in and out of view, it’s all so mesmerizing.
Soon enough all the jets slow down as they get closer to the ground. Nero unbuckles herself from the seat, the person in the front opens the windshield, and she gets out. Nero stretches herself once both feet are planted on the ground, she takes off the helmet to give it to the woman at the table in front of the jet. Nero receives her badges and goes off to the side to straighten herself out and put her hat back on. Now there’s only one thing left to do: find Roland in this giant crowd of people. Thankfully that’s not that hard, because Roland is busy screaming his head off from the black tent nearby.
Roland stares at Nero in disbelief as she walks up to him. “That was amazing!” He tells her.
Nero laughs. “Yes, I know, you’ve yelled it at me many times.”
“You’re amazing!” He continues.
Nero smirks. “Well, I already knew that.”
Nero points to the bomber. “What’s that?”
Roland holds it up. “Oh, this is for you.” He hands it to her.
Nero looks at it, smiling at the back of it, she looks at him. “I hope you also got one for yourself.”
“I did.” Roland looks over to his bomber; the woman only has four letters to go.
“I’ve just been sitting next to her for right now, you can join if you want, I don’t really know where else you’d go,” Roland tells her.
She nods. “I could stay here for now.”
Roland sits alongside the woman and Nero, Nero shows him the badges she had gotten. She’s got the same Indianapolis Air Show badge as him as well as a Purple Powder Jet badge. She ends up being handed a needle and thread to stitch the badges on her bomber. She’s surprisingly very good with a needle, then again it was she who had stitched up Roland’s chin when his own body weight and dizziness had made him crash against the ground of the car park.
“I hear there’s a hotdog stand somewhere around here, we should do that for supper,” Nero suggests.
“They’ve got a lot of things out here don’t they?” Roland remarks.
“Yup, clothing, goodies, dog tags, the world’s your oyster.” The old woman tells them. She finally gives him his bomber, and Nero and Roland are left to face the giant crowd of people again.
Around six Roland and Nero crash in the back of Roland’s truck. He looks at his mustard-slathered hotdog, he could’ve sworn he didn’t ask for that much mustard.
“Oh look there’s a pink one!” Nero points to an old vintage pink plane. Roland thinks it looks odd, like they tried to make it look attractive.
“When will I see you again?” Roland asks her.
“I think at your sister’s birthday.” She tells him
“Then after that?”
“At the summer camp.”
“That’s too far away.”
Nero chuckles. “You’ll miss me, won’t you?”
“I just, I don’t want you to leave and then I’ll hear a little later that you died a horrific death.”
“Haha! Don’t worry. It's not that dangerous carrying provisions,” She looks him in the eyes. “Besides, with all the deliveries I’m doing, I might just skew my job in that direction.”
“I think I’d like it more if you did that.”
“Well, I won’t let a man tell me what to do, but I’ll take that into consideration.”
They watch as all the planes are cleared out for the evening as they end the show with fireworks.
“Do you ever feel old Nero?” Roland asks, looking up at the fireworks.
“Hmm?”
“Like, I feel old, I guess I just didn’t expect to have a life after unwinding.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”

Roland is directed towards one of the offices in the main community college building; he sits down in a chair next to Nero.
“Why are you here?” He asks her.
“I have to finally get a last name for my piloting license. What about you?”
“They only printed my first name on my certificate, when I asked about it they said something about being information they had to get from me.”
She tilts her head. “Weird.”
“So, do you know what you want your last name to be?”
“Yup, I’ve got a name in mind.”
“What is it?”
“I’m not telling you.”
A woman from the ward comes out of the office. “Nero?”
Nero stands up. “I’m here.”
Roland watches Nero go into the room, wondering how long it will take her to get her last name.
Nero scans the room, seeing people from the ward and people she’s certain are from the government. She sits down in the seat offered to her. The man in front of her clears his throat.
“You are aware that this last name will be permanent unless you marry, yes?”
“Yes.”
“And that there is a sense of maturity when picking one.”
“You act like I’m an immature thirteen-year-old, I know what I’m getting into. I should tell you that there are nurses from my ward named Hiscocks and Phallis.” (Pronounced Phallus)
The man looks away. “Those are… unfortunate.”
Nero prods at the man. “So, may I get my last name?”
The man pulls out a piece of paper with names on it. “These are the names we’ve chosen for you, you may choose one.” Nero looks at the page, seeing some of the most common names for a Ward to pick. She also finds the names Comprix and Mosaic but what startles her most of all is the name Starkey.
She points to it. “What’s that doing here?”
The man sighs. “All the last names of your body donors will be found on here, including his.” His tone of voice indicates he really doesn’t want her to choose that one.
Nero looks at the page again. “Then why can’t I find it?”
“Hmm?”
“The last name I want, if all my body donor’s last names are on here then why can’t I find his last name?”
“We made sure all the last names were on there.”
Nero finds a certain last name, she taps on it. “That wasn’t his last name when he was unwound, I want the last name of the unwind.”
“Miss Aidoneus I think I would be better if you just stuck to-”
Nero bangs her fist against the desk. “Do you do this with every Rewind, or are you just punishing me for choosing late?”
The man doesn’t say anything, he just hands her the paper to print her name on.
Nero has thought hard about this, It was chosen in a sense to protect her best friend. He didn’t have a good time growing up, an evil man was looking over everything he did. She thinks that she wants to replace the awful memories of him with her. So that when her friend says his step-father’s last name he is not the one that comes to mind.
Nero Aidoneus Taggart
Nero steps out of the office, she looks over to Roland.
“It sounded heated in there.” He tells her.
“Yeah, I had to fight to get the name I wanted.”
“And what is it?”
She looks at him smugly. “It’s a surprise,” She opens the door to the office more. “After you!”
Roland goes into the office he’s confused about what happened with his name and why they need information out of him.
“Hello Roland, please sit down.” The man at the desk directs him.
Roland sits down.
“Hope that lady out there didn’t give you any trouble, she caused quite the fuss in here.”
Roland squints his eyes at him. “That’s my friend, she’s also usually calm until she isn’t.”
The man looks dumbfounded. “Oh. Right, well, we called you in because you technically have two different identities right now.”
Roland is surprised. “Really?”
“Yes, the government sees you as Roland McMary, but also as Roland Taggart.” The man goes wide-eyed, a little embarrassed.
“So..?”
“Well, we have to set things straight today, your piloting licence will be the first piece of government ID not given to you by Rifkin Medical Instruments.”
“I see.”
“We’ll also let you choose your own middle and last name if you don’t want to be associated with your parents, or I guess just your mother. Is she a widow?”
Roland shakes his head. “No, my parents never married.”
“Oh, you’re a bastard?”
Roland goes wide-eyed, the man waves his hand apologetically. “Sorry, old terminology, they used to call children born out of wedlock bastard children.”
The man hands him over a piece of paper. “You can print your official name here when you're ready.”
Roland looks at the paper the possibilities are endless, but when he thinks about it the only thing he wants to do is undo what his grandmother has done for him. It might be a pain in the ass to print in the future, but he doesn’t care enough about that.
Roland Daniel Franrosa McMary-Delgado
On the day of the graduation Roland had to do a double take when Nero was called up to the podium, he never thought he’d hear that name again. Nero told him as she came back down that she did so so when he said that name he wouldn’t be thinking of his step-father anymore. Roland couldn’t help but lunge into her arms and hug her.
They now sit in Roland’s room playing board games with the others, Roland had gotten Hayden to come all the way from Ohio this time.
Lilian hangs off the bed as she talks to Hayden. “You’re a celebrity right?”
“Well, that’s what everyone thinks.”
“So, if someone had a crush on you, it would be a celebrity crush?”
“That’s right.”
“But what if you knew that person personally, would it still be a celebrity crush?”
Hayden gives it a thought. “I think it would be funnier if it was still considered that,” He turns to Roland. “What do you think? Is it still considered a celebrity crush?”
Roland, now feeling very awkward about the dream he had about Hayden, stutters out an answer. “I, I guess.”
“I, I guess,” Hayden mimics him. “What’s with the stutter? What’s the nuance you aren’t telling us about?”
Roland goes to respond, but he sees his mom at the door. “Your father is here.” She tells him. He grabs his Pilot licence and he and his sister excuse themselves from the room.
His sister runs towards his father, hugging him. Like Roland Taggart’s actions Mr. Delgado’s criminal charges have been made null, and he was able to split custody of Lilian with Cindy.
His father looks at him. “Sorry, I wasn’t there for your graduation Rolando.”
“You should’ve been, he had a surprise for you.” His mother exclaimed.
“Oh, what is it?”
Roland shows him his piloting licence, he reads it, and he just kinda stands there for a while, unable to say anything. “Is, is this your official name now?” He asks.
Roland nods, his father pulls him into a hug, and it almost feels like he’ll never let go.
Recalled • Part 7 • 54 - Cross Country
Previous • Series Masterlist • Part 7 Masterlist • Next
Cross-country time is defined as time acquired during a flight that is conducted in an appropriate aircraft; that includes a point of landing that was at least a straight-line distance of more than 50 nautical miles from the original point of departure.
Nero was right when she told him he’d pass with flying colours, the Dead Reckoning testing was a piece of cake.
Roland goes over to the choppers at his allotted time. He’s supposed to maneuver one for an hour to a certain location. He’s done one-hour lessons before, but this time there are no directions or tips. Just the knowledge of the destined location.
He steps into the cockpit putting on his aviators. There’s just one person in there instead of two present during the dead reckoning test.
Roland gets himself seated, he looks over to the instructor.
“Are we headed anywhere in particular?” Roland asks.
“It’s just like the Dead Reckoning test,” He says in a monotone voice. “Just go up and keep going forward.”
Roland takes a deep breath before turning the collective’s throttle and lifting the collective, going up over the campus. He holds onto the cyclic making sure he goes forward. Compared to all the other times he’s been in a chopper this time almost seems too peaceful. Perhaps part of the test is to make sure the pilot isn’t wandering off into their own thoughts while nothing interesting is happening.
Every once in a while he’ll see another chopper fly back towards the beginning. The student seems to be in the co-pilot seat on the way back. So far he’s seen two choppers go by, he wonders how many others there are active on this test.
When he’s done with flight school he’s not really sure what he’ll do with himself. Maybe this year he’ll finally celebrate his birthday, he is turning 20 after all. Roland can’t remember the last time his birthday was actually celebrated, but he remembered it stopping when he was young. One year his mom got him one gift and the year after that Mr. Taggart told him to suck it up. He told him that he could have a good birthday on his sweet sixteen. Well, it was something alright, mom had become an emotionless husk by then and all Mr. Taggart was worried about was getting Roland to take his first sip of beer. He didn’t, he couldn’t bear to be anything like his stepfather.
At this point Roland isn’t really sure when his birthday is, he knows it’s before his sister’s, possibly in April. Over the years he’s just cross-referenced back to the year he was born to know what age he should be, well, now it’s more of what age Roland Taggart was born.
The one hour is up, Roland sees the giant patch of fluorescent red and starts to descend onto it. Once landing and stopping the instructor hands him over his certificate.
“Congratulations, you passed flight school.” He tells him.
Both of them get out of the chopper and switch seats. As Roland gets into the co-pilot seat he realizes something about the certificate. Only his first name is printed while the instructor’s name is fully there.
“Why does it just say Roland?” He asks.
“Ah, well that’s information we have to get from you once we get back.”
Roland furrows his eyebrows, wondering exactly what he’s in for once landing back on campus.
