Reflection

This project has not become what I originally expected it to be. Critical thinking and questioning my aim and critical position within this project has allowed me to produce an output that I may not normally have veered towards but has pushed the boundaries of my comfort zone. This challenged myself and the project and enabled the production of what I believe to be an authentic, honest and appropriate design outcome. 

Now at the end of this process I realise that this is the true essence of a research and development design project. A project should not take form in the outcome you want it to but in the way it needs to. This process has really pushed and evolved myself as a designer. 

Having stepped into a realm of design uncomfortable and new to my practice, the overall quality of the design outcome is not as high as I would have first expected and desired of my final honours project. However the process, thinking and development behind it has been thorough throughout. This has been a project incredibly close to my heart and I am proud of where it has come from and where it is now.

Exhibition

Unfortunately I had been having issues with my laptop and its connection to internet but I was able to have the majority of my website up and accessible - the audience was just unable to play further videos or open the scores to view completely. Hopefully this issue will be resolved for Exposure as I won’t be using my personal laptop. I don’t think headphones will be necessary for Exposure as the audience will already be watching performances on the screen and the audio in the space is on loop and their attention will be directed to other work and it is simply not necessary. 

My zines were successful with almost 15 out of 30 being taken. The A7 zines appear to have been more popular, do I provide the same variety at Exposure or refine it to just A7 zines?

Exhibition

Due to the location of our exhibit we were quite far away from the rest of the exhibit but despite this we were able to take across two quite reasonably sized groups to show our exhibit too. I think it went really well and I thoroughly enjoyed the process of exhibiting as a group and the collaboration that required.

I test printed the original zines in black and white and to print them in colour (8 A4 pages) was going to cost $3.20 each. 

At this point I decided to return to the original idea of the 1 page zine template and reduce the zine to only scores and remove the photo series. The score is the tool and not the documentation of it.

I may even take it the next step further and test printing them at A7, which means they can easily fit into back pockets, phone cases, wallets. An easily accessed and transported tool.

Exploring how I will use the entire shelf to exhibit

Exploring font choice - helvetica isn’t quite cutting it.... I want a font that relates back to the handwritten scores however the scale of which I want to print posters at won’t allow me to write in my own handwriting and scan in while remaining at good quality.

Chosen font is Northwell Alt

Test printing zines; at first I thought I wanted the zines to be A5 size, then I tested A6 and I prefer this size over the larger A5.

Once again the themes with header images are working more successfully than those without.

I like the development of header images as it forms a landing point when visiting the website - transitions into the content on the website

Unsure yet the scale of which I want the score images to appear - the ones here are quite large and possibly too big

Final Exhibition

Using a shelf unit I would exhibit my website through having my own laptop set up (Ideally would want to use an iMac but one is not available to me) I won’t be able to leave my laptop for an entire week but due to the nature of our group exhibiting in the lighting studio our exhibit will need to be taken down that same day or atleast the next. 

I quite like the aesthetic of the laptop exhibiting the website as the reality is that most will access it via laptop or even smaller devices. Authenticity and true to experience. 

I would use the easel part of the shelf to exhibit title - blurb - my name - perhaps score cards - photo series - stills from videos - this would depend on what is also exhibited in the zines available to take away, as there is no point duplicating content.

How many zines to print? 20? Budget wise and scale of exhibition. Have pens there - instructions - to encourage both people to take the zines away with them and to write their own scores either in their zine or to leave behind. 

Will need a light directing light to this shelf so people can see what they are doing. 

Depending on the development of my video content; if there is no longer any need to project in the lighting studio where would I exhibit? In the tea gardens or set up my shelf outside the lighting studio? Still relevant to the location the performances were filmed in.
