Impressive is the presence of the element of water in the work of the English classicist painter, Herbert James Draper (1863-1920). Draper found most of his inspiration in ancient greek myths and the female magical creatures of sea nymphs (naiads), mermaids and goddesses. His heroines are sensual and very fluid as the water inside of them demands. This is an effortless femininity, simple yet powerful, far away from any vulgarities, it is nurturing and playful, maybe a bit distant though. The element of water so evident in the paintings of this great artist correlates with sexuality and motherhood. The powers of water are those of the abyss before the birth, of the rain quenching the thirst of the earth, of the flow of the living womb.
